A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

How to get gba games in the uk

Hiya!! I recently bought a gba and a copy of warioland 4 from CEX and it’s awesome, but I’m now realizing getting authentic games for it isn’t gonna be super easy. Cex is pretty good, but the range per store is fairly limited (so ordering is probably best) and a lot of these games aren’t cheap, aria of sorrow and zero mission for example seem to average at about £70 which I can’t really justify. I don’t reallyyyy trust ebay unless they’re selling like 1 copy of the game with pictures to prove it’s real, does anyone else have experience buying gba games in the uk and should I invest in a flash cart? (And which one should I get) thanks!!! :]

Messed up the power switch

I got myself a GBA that has a power issue. I got to the point where I wanted to try resoldering. I accidentally melted the plastic, so I decided to disassemble. I thought the plastic melted to the board, so I pried it off after desoldering. It looks like a pad got stuck on the solder point and lifted off with it. How do I proceed with replacing the switch?

So much for keeping it OG

When I found my childhood gba in a box, my intention was to jump back in where I left off, just throwing it in my pocket/bag and playing. Then the plastic lens started shedding, the battery door broke, and the d-pad... oh man the d-pad.

The original d-pad was so stiff and unresponsive. It works fine for like platformers or rpgs, but I just could not play gradius. So I tried my luck with a replacement membrane and put the original membrane in another device to replace the shitty chinese membrane that kept fallimg apart. Surprise suprise, the shitty chinese gba membrane also fell apart. Since I guess its impossible to get good button membranea in 2026, I finally got sick of eating shit in games and I put in tactile switches that were salvaged from some type of broken remote. Omg. I don't like tact switches, and I really resisted going this route, but holy snokes is it great to actually know what direction I'm pressing and have consistent action. Its definitely not ideal, but it is sooooo much better.

I got a glass lens and it looks phenomenal, like a whole new screen. The coating on the old lense started flaking and oh man was it hard to see. The logo on the new one doesnt look good, but hey, I'm not complaining. The battery door clip broke and I was just holding it in place while playing for a few weeks, but finally I got around to making a new clip out of a broken usb cable I found. Works like a charm.

Anyway, this is my franken gba. I'm just happy it works.

Game Girl Advanced is real

Something I wanted to figure out for years, and more so after I saw a few websites make fake generators for it.
I know VBA sucks as an emulator, but it does show me the bios, so that's a good enough smoke test for me before I try flashing this to a real console or use it with more emulators. Even know most emulators now days don't need a gba bios image anymore.
You can get it from here but I still haven't worked out how to get it into the real agb-001 or ags-001 yet, that requires replacing the read only mask rom on the console with my own custom flash. haven't started that work yet.
gba_bios_gamegirl.bin No pallet mods, just the replacement logo
gba_bios_gamegirl_pink.bin Pink on black pellet mod with replacement logo.

"fun" side effect of this mod. So I could replace the letters in the gameboy logo fine, but after adding an additional letter to the logo and doing pallet mods, I ran out of unused space in the bios for my mods. Soooo I gutted the cart auth check. It will still display the Nintendo logo stored in the cart rom, but we don't store a copy of that logo in the bios to compare with. so it will boot anything, shitty bootleg or real cart it should just work lol. But this is also kinda untested, as just about all games bootleg or not, outside of some ique things I think is designed to run on real hardware, so they will have all the checks that need copied, fixed or spoofed already there. We are just not checking them anymore.

Is this normal?

Edit: confirmed as genuine and normal thank you everyone

Okay I need some help with this one please. I purchased this copy of Leaf Green, looks super authentic no reason to suggest it isn't at least from what I can see and having purchased all the other game boy and game boy advance games and trying to learn spotting fakes.

Anyone else experienced this pause or delay when returning to the in-game start menu?

GameBoy Advance is a genuine GBA that was resheld, IPS v3, and rechargeable battery with USB C modded all done by me.
