Which Distro? Which Distro? (Coming from Windows, & I dislike Ubuntu)

Windows just keeps getting worse and worse. I built my PC about 2 years ago, it was about a 600$ build. I wanted to use Linux and I downloaded Ubuntu. I wasn't a huge fan of Ubuntu and eventually I just switched to Windows (partly for gaming). Now that windows is getting even shittier and GOG and other services are coming to Linux I would like to switch back.

Like I said, I was not a big fan of Ubuntu. I'm looking for a Distro that is fairly simple though and can do gaming reasonably well. Some of the options I'm considering so far are Debian, Fedora, and Mint. I'm fairly new to it so I don't think i'm looking for something like Arch.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Misconceptions/Questions about swapping to linux I have before making the swap

I wanted to swap to linux for awhile but there is some things stopping me and some guidance on them would be hugely appreciated. Sorry if these seem super obvious I am very bad with tech and love my computer too much to risk anything ever lol

  1. Do I need to go find my computers basic drivers over again like Wifi, bluetooth and graphic ones
  2. Is it all online games that dont allow linux or just specific ones. I do most of my gaming offline anyways but I enjoy MMOs too and the rare times I want to play a shooter it'd be nice to know what i can still game easily as I dont wish to dual boot for 1 or 2 games I play 3 times a month lol.
  3. I care a lot about the customization (background, widget implementations etc) that linux offers is there a certain kind of distro I should look for in that or is that kind of a general thing linux offers
  4. if I find a new distro I like how hard would swapping that be I am pretty indecisive sometimes

Support Trying to install linux mint

Hi guys. I’ve been trying to switch to linuxmint for a while now. First I tried dual booting on a single nvme Ssd. That didnt work cuz windows sucks. Now I bought a separate nvme ssd one without an OS. So i removed my ssd with windows and put in the new one. But the error persist. Do I need to do something about the bios?

Support Title: How can I get NVIDIA Digital Vibrance/Saturation control back on Ubuntu 26.04?

Hey everyone,

I recently upgraded my Lenovo Legion laptop from Ubuntu 24.04.1 to Ubuntu 26.04.1.

On Ubuntu 24.04, I was using GNOME on X11 with my NVIDIA GPU, and I could open NVIDIA X Server Settings and adjust the Digital Vibrance to increase the display saturation.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04, I'm now using Wayland, and that Digital Vibrance option isn't available anymore.

I specifically want to keep using GNOME + X11 because I want the NVIDIA Digital Vibrance control back.

Has anyone running Ubuntu 26.04 + NVIDIA + GNOME successfully switched back to X11 and gotten the Digital Vibrance setting working?

I'd also like to know if there's a proper way to make GNOME on Xorg/X11 the default session without completely removing Wayland.

Thanks!

Which Distro? Distro and some other questions

• Upvotes

Hi,

What distro would you recommend for following:
- it is secure by default*
- gaming**
- general daily usage (office work, browsing, doing normal daily stuff)**
- not really crazy tinkering

*this one is kinda interesting, since compared to Win or macOS and RHEL (well no a desktop) and (I guess Fedora/Ubuntu?) there is an enterprise behinde it that somehow provides a security behinde it (some more/ some less) and the reason is that they kinda cannot allow themselfs to have unsecure stuf cuz it runs on enterprise compare to community projects etc., others adopts different philosophy, or may fall behinde or short on some things.
For example secure boot, fixing vurns, exploits on regular basis, etc.

** question about KLAC (I know that KLAC is not running in kernel on Linux but in user-space), assuming it is supported by game-devs. In case that AC gets compro it is more secure than KLAC?
User on Linux can verify if AC is running and scaning the system or there is an option to limit what AC has access to?
(Another approach to this is obviously separate machine for gaming/working, but... it really depends)

Support How to stop steam from spamming bus_lock traps as soon as I login?

how can I prevent this or stop this all together from being used as a potential resource attack just to be safe?

Thank you.

Edit:

When logging into deadlock cpu hits 80 degrees

this problem only exists with Valve games (Dota and Deadlock). I've never seen my cpu go above 60 outside of stress tests or Valve games.

Support Safely shrinking a LUKS + Btrfs partition on Fedora 44 to dual-boot CachyOS (Previously expanded LUKS container)

Hi everyone,

I'm currently running Fedora 44, which was originally installed with LUKS encryption enabled out of the box (Btrfs filesystem inside LUKS).

A few months ago, I removed a previous dual-boot setup and expanded both the LUKS container and the Btrfs filesystem to occupy 100% of my drive.

Now, I want to shrink my encrypted Fedora partition to free up space and set up a dual-boot with CachyOS. Since I previously expanded the partition and LUKS container, I want to ensure I don't damage the LUKS header or corrupt my data during the shrink process.

Before booted into a Live USB to make changes, I have a few questions:

  1. **Order of operations:** Is the correct process `shrink Btrfs filesystem -> shrink LUKS container (cryptsetup) -> shrink outer partition`?

  2. **Tools:** Can GParted on a Fedora Live USB safely handle unlocked Btrfs inside LUKS, or is it safer to do it manually via terminal commands (`btrfs filesystem resize` and `cryptsetup`)?

  3. **Safety / Precautions:** What is the exact procedure to back up the LUKS header (`cryptsetup luksHeaderBackup`) before modifying partition boundaries?

Any step-by-step advice or warnings from anyone who has done this on Fedora would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Support Issues with Ubuntu 26.04.1 - advice please!

I'm not really sure what is going on with my Ubuntu installation.

It has been running fine for the last four or five years without issue, upgrading to the next version etc.

Then all of a sudden this week I have struck several issues, which I think may be linked to an automated update to 26.04.1.

Issue 1 - graphics issues. Red, green, blue dots appearing all over the screen randomly

Issue 2 - cannot open Firefox or any Snaps. Trying to open them from the Terminal presents a Snap error.

Issue 3 - issue with running "sudo apt-get update" - some repositories are not recognized or picked up, meaning about 40 packages cannot update.

Issue 4 - occasionally booting to "initramfs"

Issue 5 - I was going to attempt to reinstall Ubuntu from a USB, however booting from the USB and clicking "Try Ubuntu" takes me to the "initramfs" and does not boot to the usual installer.

I have tried searching for similar issues and nothing I have tried has fixed this, which is why I was just going to undertake a complete clean install.

I have a dual boot set up and the Windows partition is working perfectly fine.

What can I try to resolve these issues? And if I can answer any questions or provide any information to help diagnose the issue please let me know.

Thank you!

EDIT - some hardware info:

HP Pavilion Laptop 15 HP
Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 × 8
Graphics (being picked up by Ubuntu, it should be Nvidia) - Intel® Iris® Plus Graphics (ICL GT2)
Windowing system - Wayland

A question about the proposed kids act EU and Linux

I'm not really that knowledgeable about the type of laws and things that has been proposed, I just listened to the video posted on YouTube by the same man behind StopKillingGames and from what I understood is that Linux distros without the ID check could potentially be classified as illegal, am I understanding that wrong? So If I'm using Bazzite then that would be considered illegal for example?

Sorry if this question seems weird or if someone already asked it

Support What does the error "unable to locate package" and "Couldn't find any package by glob..." mean

I'm trying to install and run a more up to date version of Anki. For some reason if you use the link provided on the Anki website it downloads a very old version that makes a lot of my cards unusable (they include a lot of TTS and Image Occlusion for those that use anki and are possible wondering what I'm referring to)

That being said, after downloading a later version from github (not the arch version) and doing a bit of reading, I tried to install it and am getting constant errors. I'm on Linux Mint Cinnamon so I know there's likely a method that's way easier than using the terminal but I would like to become more familiar with using the terminal as I would like to eventually try other distros (though I am loving Mint) that being said could you provide some possible guidance

Edit: SORRY FOR THE DUMBASS QUESTION I thought I had pressed linux4noobs. My apologies I believe this server is meant for people who are a bit more acclimated to Linux

What was your biggest frustration when switching to Linux?

Hello everyone! I'm thinking about creating some helpful content for people who want to switch from Windows to Linux with no stress, using the regular desktop and not the terminal. I want any grandma to be able to scroll/surf the web on Linux and be more comfortable with it

I'm curious, if you've fully switched, tried, or thought about it, what is your biggest frustration? I appreciate every comment

Thanks in advance!

Very bad gaming performance

For context, I have an ASUS TUF F16, INTEL CORE 5 210H, RTX 30506GB, 16Gb DDR5, running on CachyOS.

I basically tested three games:

GTA V ENHANCED:35-55fps(on very high)

BLOODSTRIKE:120-180fps

RDR2:35fps on average

But I thought these were too low for my specs. I then started trying everything, every proton versions, switched betn different drivers and distros, only to find no significant difference. I then switched to windows and got these:

GTA V ENHANCED:55-85fps(on very high)

BLOODSTRIKE:230-240fps

RDR2:55fps on average

Now I know directx12 is not that great on linux, but directx 11 isn't running that well either(AT LEAST IN MY CASE).

I've rub my previous laptop with an integrated intel gpu for 3 and a half years with zero issues whatsover, and I knew NVIDIA had issues with linux, but not THIS BAD

So the question is: Am I doing anything wrong, or should try anything different? I hate windows and would like to avoid daily driving it as much as possible.

Which Distro? TuxedoOS, Pop!_OS, SlimbookOS, or others. Which Linux distribution is generally the most laptop-ready?

I’m using a laptop with an Intel i5-13450HX and an RTX 5050 (iGPU + dGPU).

I’m especially interested in hibernation and S3 suspend, as I use these frequently. I haven’t used these three distributions extensively yet.

Please do not recommend regular suspend/sleep if it is not S3. I specifically want S3 suspend or hibernation, and I do not want the system regularly writing RAM contents to the SSD, as I’m concerned about unnecessary drive wear.

On Fedora and CachyOS, hibernation initially failed to resume. After fixing that, the laptop would sometimes become extremely hot while the fans and keyboard backlight were off, possibly because some hardware was still running in the background.

So, which Linux distributions would you recommend for a laptop with this hardware, especially if reliable S3 suspend and hibernation are a priority?

Support Recurring Bluetooth Problem

I've been trying to connect my headphones (Sony WF-C510) to my PC. I had problems with bluetooth on windows, I hadn't used Linux in a while so I decided to switch, and the problems persisted. I've tried using bluetoothctl, factory resetting my headphones, restarting bluetooth, and changing configs (i don't remember which at this moment since it was like 1 month ago). But recently I bought a thinkpad T14s (1st gen), I tried connecting bluetooth to it, and to no avail, I tried using the bluetooth section in kde's system settings, but it didn't work, it said that the connection failed, but in the paired section it said that it was connected, but my headphones were still in pairing mode, when trying to reconnect it just gave me an error saying "br-connection-unknown", bluetoothctl did the same, but I didn't see any problems with pairing, I only encountered an error with connecting, I've tried changing the controller mode from dual, to bredr, and to le, but nothing helped, that's all I did, its what google told me to do, but nothing changed. I really dislike this thinkpad's speakers, they are really quiet and are basically mono, I really need a solution since i also wanted to listen to music on it.

(NOTE: My main PC uses cachy, and my thinkpad uses arch)
