Is my game real or fake? find it out at /r/gameverifying/

A couple of weeks ago we posted a little announcement that we wanted to start a FAQ for checking out your games legitimacy.

We didn't get any response, and that is okay. We do keep getting reports and angry comments about this topic. So we are now removing and redirecting posts that contain certain keywords to /r/gameverifying/ or use their website.

If your post gets caught by automod by mistake, please message us and we will resolve it as quickly as we can.

We are still looking for a way to set up our own way of checking if your games are fake. If you have clear photographs of real and fake games we very much appreciate it.

First time DS lite re-shell!

After my old cobalt blue DS lite hinge cracked, figured I might as well try the replacement myself. A few bumps in the road along the way, but now that I’m done I think it came out pretty great!

I went with a cheap Chinese brand on AliExpress (in retrospect just stick w Extremerate, this shell came scratched to hell, dust molded into the plastic, and shoulder buttons didn’t work so I kept the original black ones), so the workarounds weren’t too bad. Stickers were put on the DS itself, not the clear case.

Chose this green specifically, it works well with the ‘plant/clover’ theme pretty well. I had to re-apply a second top screen cover after scratching the original which unfortunately does not perfectly match the bottom shade.

Happy to have learned along the way, any thoughts?

Unit-01DS : my 1st reshell

This build features the eXtremeRate Chameleon Green Purple shell while retaining the original green interior.

The goal was to modernize the Nintendo DS Lite while preserving some of its original character. Because custom green mods in the community are rare, I drew inspiration from Evangelion Unit-01 (EVA-01) from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The metallic, iridescent finish shifts from purple to green depending on the lighting, giving the console a sci-fi machine feel, while respecting the original green color.

To protect the shell while enhancing the aesthetic, I added a transparent crystal case from AliExpress. This creates a great layered effect, making it look as though the bright green interior is part of the inner machinery sitting beneath protective armor (like a EVA), rather than just another decorative color. I also swapped the buttons to introduce a touch of purple and green to the front, tying the entire design together.

Bonus: By keeping the original interior, I bypassed the headache of disassembling the hinge, screens, and ribbon cables.

Smash64DS Update: 10/2

It's been several weeks since my last update on this project. I've made huge progress since my last update on 8/16

  • Title and Menu navigation.
  • All fighters and stages added
  • 1P campaign is playable start to finish.
  • 4 fighter matches are playable (No actual DS multiplayer yet)
  • All Items added

Not yet added/finished:

  • stable 30FPS performance (its mostly there, but 4P matches can dip to 20FPS, 1-3 should be fine)
  • Training mode (honestly not high priority)
  • Bonus stage buttons not working.
  • End Credits/End Scene
  • Intro scene (not high priority)
  • Proper character unlocks

BUGS/Compromises:

  • still have random freezes in some areas.
  • Saffron city's garage door thing is always open lol.
  • Transition/loading screens are much longer (a couple secs instead of instant lol) than on n64 (loading screen is currently just a blank black screen in between scenes because of DS's limited RAM and storage bandwidth)
  • Occasional Audio Stuttering during heavy matches/loading states.
  • of course running at a target of 30FPS instead of 60FPS like the original. The DS CPU is anemic compared to the n64 and has no coprocessors or FPU to offload tasks to like the n64 does. Tons of optimization has been done to even get it to run at 30FPS lol.

Current gameplay video is from MelonDS since it's so much easier to capture. Don't worry though, it works just fine on a real DS too.

Overall i'd say the project is about 75% complete. multiplayer and final optimization are the next big project. And I do want to add Remix characters.....

Also I haven't tried building the ROM from a clean folder so if it doesn't build for you, I'm sorry I'll get around to it when it's ready for a "1.0" release.

So I was browsing Amazon this week and to my surprise found this 2008 case for the DS lite for 17€. I don't have any idea how this survived 18 years brand new, but I'm definitely going to use it for storage and transportation on long trips.

I got this DS for 25€ because touch wasn't working, hinge broke on the way here and the platform I bought it on just refunded me and let the seller keep their money, so I basically got it for free! lol

I managed to fix the touch without changing the panel so I didn't have to spend extra money, it was just a problem with the ribbon cable!

I'm just sad I didn't think of keeping the original "Nintendo" plaque, since it had a pink-ish color and this new one is just silver :(

That mark on the corner of the screen is just the protective film, should I just remove it? I kept it on for safety because i've been using it quite a bit!

Storytime included:

Rose gold was my childhood ds, that I taped up to be a makeshift 2ds from a broken hinge until I messed up a DIY case and use it to keep it together for now, I absolutely beat it senseless with 2000+ hours of pokemon alone (because within two days of getting a dsi for Christmas my brother broke the screen fighting for it off me because he basically wanted two dsi's instead of one to always keep from me for pokemon.) It was a habit he started when we got pokemon games and he basically felt entitled to everything I had- to avoid triggering content I'll keep these parts vague, to say the least I got many hours out of flipnote so it's still a loved dsi.

The friends he made were also entitled chud kids and stole just about all my games besides the pearl and leaf green I had in my original ds bc they didn't know I had more than one system, and when I confronted the kid at his home his mother only gave me the wappydog and LSP games back, I lost everything until I cried to my mom to get me heartgold again then soulsilver (very good call on my part they are super expensive now) and the rest is history- I got some back, Super mario, Cooking mama, through different circumstances, Later in time my mom bought the 2ds because it was a cheep (and in my opinion not ideal sorry not sorry 2ds stans I hated it) system and it broke after I bit into it during a reactive abuse moment from my lovely brother again, I trashed it because I didn't want to face having to admit that to my mother or anybody else really.

My childhood console journey ended with the 3ds xl because by then I really just wanted a ds that I could play and wasn't going to be broken in any way, I kept that thing secretive but that also means I didn't get many chances taking it out with me, and because it was my only and first 3ds, and first limited edition, I didn't completely understand the aura I had and took it to places like Ihop where ppl talked about it. pictured I treated that thing like literal gold, it is very minty despite being my original 3ds. Frankly I just wanted a gold ds again, even if not rose gold.

Then later on I got my first Switch lite because frankly I never moved on from handheld consoles and didn't do much outside of that- unfortunately not my favorite because the screens are out in the open and not as portable- even if I am technically missing out, I have yet to find any other way I like playing games then just literally from my pocket while touching grass- Then my cousin years later surprised me with another switch lite for Christmas which I put animal crossing decals on from a time he also took me to an antique store.

All the games here are authentic as far as I understand. My Wappy and the game are the original pair. And I lately got back into the ds line of systems after I bought myself a minty (literally and color wise) ds lite for a not so good price online, but with fix ins like the R4 cart and pokemon black I used to have, so I could finally play my leafgreen again, and it spiraled into me also getting a new dsi, cases for all my ds's, acrylic cases for all of them and decorating them. Along with some new game carts I didn't have as a kid. (Atari Retro, Tamagotchi 2, Super Monkey Ball, Game and Watch GBA, Ontamarama) I basically sold a lot of games that were given to my brother then thrown to me because I wanted to buy these games with all the protection and cases I needed.

I don't have much going for me in life but I can say for certain the Nintendo handhelds, especially the ds, have given me comfort throughout my life even if they had it just as rough as me. I'm sure as my life changes they will be incorporated in my daily life.

💔Bonus: Bro found out and got jealous despite me thinking he was over it, and got himself a used OG switch I'm not sure he done much with tbh, that's when our relationship really was obviously fallen apart. It was a weird moment of me moving on from his tormenting and making sure I didn't share anything gaming related with him, but he still cared apparently. And ironically my brother got jealous after seemingly moving on from the ds line and onto PC in highschool- he never really played it as far as I know but somehow managed to have it in worse condition than mine, also mimicking getting a limited edition console. I think looking back he had a hard time accepting that not everything I done included him, and that he struggled to accept that I was a separate person that would be treated differently, but he wanted everything I got, literally, and his own, and he never grew out of that, we are estranged now.

New to DS world, question about GBA specific

I got my first ever DS lite yesterday and already ordered a DSPico from AEx, but I was wondering since I want to also play GBA games if I should get a separate flash card for the GBA or just use the Pico?

If you recommend I get a separate card, which one? (Preferably one sold on AEx that will it play along nicely with the Pico).

Retrospectives2000 NDS Dumper (Original name: Tengu DS RetroDumper). Physical DS Dumper. Quick tutorial and review.

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

The Retrospectives2000 NDS Dumper goes for $86 brand new on eBay (USA website). It's made in China. I waited about 2-3 weeks until I received the product. It would have been perfect if it was sold for around $50 but it is what it is. I did the homework (chatted with the eBay seller, testing the product, etc) and these are things to keep in mind before buying this product:

- You will need a DS or DSi system to continue with the process. Why? You have to backup your own bios files to continue. I own a Nintendo DSi system. If you just use the NDS dumper, open the MultiDumper program, click on the DS icon and click INFO, it will tell you in red that you're missing the bios files (look at the pictures). The MultiDumper program will allow you to dump your DS game without any bios. However, when I tried that and played the dumped nds files on the Desmume emulator, it did not work. Once I did get the DSi bios files from my DSi system, did the process below, and used the MultiDumper program to dump my Nintendo DS games, the nds files worked on the Desmume emulator.

- The Retrospectives2000 NDS Dumper does not come with a USB printer cable. Buy one if needed.

- I highly recommend putting tape on the "insert game cartridge" slot part. Look at the pictures to understand what I'm saying. There should have been hot glue (or whatever is safe to use) on the sides of that slot part so it doesn't move at all.

- Download the Desmume DS emulator for testing purposes here: https://www.desmume.com/download.htm

*** I'm just going to assume you have a DSi so ... enjoy:

Step 1) Dump your DSi Bios files from your DSi system. I used this video to help me with the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxKaDM_1kYc

Step 2) Once you get your bios files, change bios7.bin (16 KB) to biosnds7.rom

*** If you don't have any physical DSi games, just skip reading this and go to Step 3.

The eBay seller responded with this:
For DS
BIOS file name must be named biosnds7.rom
File size 16384 bytes
File CRC32 1280F0D5

For DSi
BIOS file name must be named biosnds9i.rom
File size 65536 bytes
File CRC32 3D64D498

When you backup your DSi bios, you get four bios files: bios7.bin, bios9.bin, bios7i.bin and bios9i.bin. I don't own any physical DSi games. Look up DSi System Flaw (2009) as an example. We already know bios7.bin works for normal DS games. My recommendation: delete or move biosnds7.rom out of the mapper folder and give the other three bios files a try (one at a time). One of them has to work. Example: bios9bin to biosnds9i.rom. I did ask the seller if physical DSi games worked with the NDS dumper and the response was: "Not available for now. We haven't tested DSI cartridges." The status of dumping physical DSi games will remain "untested". Regardless, on to Step 3.

Step 3) Download that DS dumper program (MultiDumper_full_win_20260520). Link here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aSjJGDaNYRXROGKoaE-KS5Z6ZbxNDW0y/view

Step 4) I'm using Windows 11. You can put the compressed file on your desktop (if you want), right click and click on the "Extract All" option. Extract all the files and you should have a folder with that DS dumper program + mapper folder inside of it.

Step 5) Put the bios file biosnds7.rom into that mapper folder.

Step 6) Put your DS game into the Retrospectives2000 NDS Dumper. Plug the printer cable into the NDS Dumper, then connect the other end to the computer. Go to "This PC" (or use File explorer to help you get there) and you will see that you now have a new drive. If you open up the new drive (NDS), you'll see some stuff and the game you put into the NDS Dumper. You'll see it as a NDS file. You can close that window and get ready for the next step.

Step 7) Open up the MultiDumper program. On the left side, you'll see a bunch of consoles. Look for the DS icon and click on it. Then, click on the INFO button on the right side. Once you see that the program read your DS cartridge, click on the DUMP button. Name the game whatever you want and save it wherever you want to save it. Once it's done, you can close the program.

Keep in mind: In the event clicking the INFO button and the program doesn't do anything (frozen basically), just close the MultiDumper program and give it two or three more tries. It will work eventually. If clicking INFO gives you this error: Can not check rom header (0xffffffff), just shut off the computer, remove the DS game from the Retrospectives2000 NDS Dumper, get a rechargeable compressed air duster (or the normal 10 oz can version) and give that DS cartridge a quick clean. Then try the whole process again. After a couple of tries, it eventually worked for me. Worst case scenario: you can use a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) to clean your DS cartridge. It's the safest method for cleaning Nintendo DS cartridges. The brush should be damp, not dripping wet.

Step 8) You can test your nds file using the Desmume DS emulator. Once you see that the game works, you're done. Since the dumper unit is still on, you can go to "This PC", right click on the NDS drive and safely eject.

Long story short: it gets the job done. I have backed up all my Nintendo DS games using this product. Did it have hiccups along the way? Yes, but eventually the NDS Dumper worked and that's what ultimately matters. It would be great if one day there would be a physical NDS dumper that doesn't require any BIOS files, but I don't think that's ever going to happen. Leave a comment in case a product like that exist one day. I'm going to rate this NDS dumper an 8 out of 10.

Special thanks to reddit user Abject-Town2465 ( https://www.reddit.com/user/Abject-Town2465/ ). One of his pictures was used for this post. It was the picture that shows the NDS dumper without "Retrospectives2000" written on it. He put Mario Kart DS inside his NDS dumper.

It will be some of the original nds/gb/gba apps first and then I will include all the newer GB studio / homebrew and eventually end on the 3ds. I have two "episodes" so far"

  1. GB electric drum app that is still available for GB, emulations or rom link in video

2: DS sampling Keyboard (similar to the old sk-1 by casio) basic sampling app
