UT2004 BREAKING: Unreal Tournament 2004 is back!

1.5k Upvotes

OldUnreal just posted this announcement on their Discord:

"Welcome Back, Unreal Tournament 2004!

Hi everyone! Some of you were probably wondering why we've been so quiet in the past couple of months. Today, we can finally reveal (part of) the answer: we've been working on a new side project! With Epic's blessing and with the help of some new team members, we are bringing Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) back.

This means that we are going to publish an installer that downloads the original disc image for UT2004, installs the game, and applies patches to it. We are also going to start publishing patches that modernize the game, make it compatible with Windows Vista or later, Linux x86-64 and aarch64 (Raspberry Pi and similar), and Mac OS 10.9 or later, fix bugs, and implement quality-of-life changes.

Yes, you read that right. UT2004 will soon be available to download once again. Free of charge. This is a community-run effort but we’re excited to make the game easier to access and play again. We have been working on this for quite some time now and have made enough progress to start inviting the first batch of testers.

Highlights so far include:

  • We now natively support modern Linux and macOS systems with 64-bit Intel and ARM/Apple CPUs
  • You can now play the game or run a server on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, albeit at a lower frame rate than on a PC!
  • The Linux and macOS distributions of the patch now include a fully functional UCC with an UnrealScript compiler (UCC make) and texture compression support
  • The Linux and macOS distributions now use SDL3 instead of SDL1
  • D3D9Drv and fullscreen support are fully functional in the Windows 64-bit client
  • We dealt our first (minor) blow to the editor goblin! We fixed several crash bugs, restored some broken functionality, and, most importantly, the editor will no longer freeze for several seconds when you click a viewport

❓ Q&A ❓

Some questions might have popped into your head as you read this news. Let us try to answer some of them.

Q: Will the OldUnreal patches be compatible with the latest official version of the game?

A: Yes, for the most part. Unpatched clients can play on patched servers and patched clients can play on unpatched servers.

Most mods should also continue to work as before. The only exceptions are mods that perform game version checks and exclude players with unknown game versions.

Unfortunately, AntiTCC is one of those mods.

Q: Will AntiTCC be updated to support the new patches?

A: Yes. Wormbo gave us permission to update AntiTCC. This is still a work in progress, though.

Q: As a server admin, how do I ensure that players with the new version can continue to play on my servers?

A: We're aware of a network compatibility problem caused by an unofficial patch.

This problem results in players with the new version not being able to connect to (some) old servers.

You can mitigate this problem by (re)installing the official 3369.3 version of the offending files on your server.

Similarly, players that have installed this unofficial patch might need to reinstall the official 3369.3 files to play on updated servers.

In the meantime, we're looking into an alternative solution that does not require reinstalling the 3369.3 patch.

Q: Can I apply the OldUnreal patch to the retail version of the game?

A: On Windows: absolutely. Do keep in mind, however, that we do not support 32-bit CPUs.

On other platforms, your mileage may vary. Patching existing Linux/Mac OS X/macOS installations of the game is possible, but it could require a fair amount of manual effort.

We recommend installing the game from scratch following the instructions we provide in our README.

Q: What are your plans for the near future?

A: We are going to address the rough edges and unfinished features in the new version, and try our best to publish a preview installer and patch ASAP.

In the meantime, we will also work on some quality-of-life improvements and on the long list of editor fixes we want to port over from our other projects.

Q: What is the timeline?

A: We are currently inviting server admins and modders to join our internal tester group. We're aiming to release a public test version within the next two months.

Q: How can I contribute?

A: We will be needing testers in the near future. Keep an eye on our Discord server to see when.

Q: Are you getting paid for this project?

A: No. We're doing this for free because we're fans of the game and we like a challenge. In fact, projects like these cost us a bit of money for server hosting, software licenses and subscriptions, certificates, etc, as we independently operate the games ourselves.

Q: Who is responsible for this project?

A: The main developers of the Windows installer and the patches are Buggie, Marco/Dots, Deaod, Metallicafan212, Piglet, CacoFFF, AnthraX, and Smirftsch.

The patch also includes contributions from Wormbo, Shambler, and Ryan C. Gordon (icculus).

We would also like to thank Epic for making this possible.

Please direct all support requests or questions to [us/OldUnreal], not Epic Games."

UT General Wow! I had forgotten how much fun I had with these games!

I just found out about the games being available and running on modern systems about a week ago. I haven't played either one in probably over 20 years. I downloaded both UT99 and UT2004 and mostly played single player on UT2004 just to get back in the groove.

The maps, the sounds, everything about it has brought back this flood of amazing memories. They truly are special and huge thanks to the people behind making them available and usable on modern systems. I have been having a blast.

The last 2 nights I jumped in a couple games on public servers on UT99 (I wish more were on the newer game, too)...and wow, what a fun time! I was laughing myself silly on the fast paced instagib CTF maps.

Way back in the day I used to play competitively in a gaming clan. I'm now 58 years old but in two games I was still the top score. Back then, I was more a defensive guy, but on one game last night I had 5 of 6 flag captures for our team. Not that that matters all that much in itself, but it's kinda cool to think that for a round or two this old man can keep up with whoever is playing now. But maybe we're all old? LOL

In any case, these games gave me so much joy back in the day and are once again doing the same. I appreciate all involved, including those of you who are in those public servers and contributing to the fun!

New feature:

  • More fine-grained dismemberment: Now forearms / hands / calves / feet can all be seperately dismembered (theoretically a corpse can be cut into 15 pieces, while in prior versions only full arms / legs dismemberment is allowed).
  • Skeletons can also be dismembered.
  • New option to turn on / off skeletizing effects (Link Gun / Ion Cannon)

Update will be available on ModDB soon.

UT3 Looking for CBP3-DOMmaps_v5.rar — UT3DOM 5 recooked CBP3 maps

Hi all ut fans:

I'm trying to preserve the final UT3DOM 5 compatible versions of the CBP3 Domination maps. The original file was posted around November 2012 and was named: CBP3-DOMmaps_v5.rar It contained CBP3 Domination maps recooked specifically for UT3DOM 5, fixing the old maps which had UT3DOM 3.1 cooked into them and could cause Package mismatch UTDom online. The original ut3dom.xantaz.net download is dead. If anyone has an old UT3 backup, server archive, Downloads folder, DVD/HDD, old email attachment or mirror containing this RAR — please don't delete or modify it. Even the original archive or individual recooked maps would be extremely useful for preservation. Maps involved include: CollisionCourse, Enslaved, Halcyon, Saip, Stronghold, Velocity, Yarith. I'm specifically looking for the UT3DOM 5 recooks, not the original 2009 CBP3/UTDom 3.1 versions.

Thanks in advanced.

UT General I built a texture browser/database

Hi Guys, im an old modder from back in the day Vitaloverdose, a couple of months ago i decided to have a go at finishing a few maps from 20 years back and started to make a few tools to make things a bit easier. So i wanted something that i could use to browse and extract texture packages to pngs. Then i wanted an easier way to search them also d a way to cataloge them and i ended up making a nice modern texture browser and database. Someone on FB suggestd i post it here.

Light and dark mode

  • Large expanable preview display
  • All panels are easily expanadable
  • Copes with most DDS teture types
  • Displayes the alpha channels correctly
  • Fast search for texture names -Data base for evey texture package where you can add notes to each package that you can search on at a later date
  • Star rating for each package -Browser shows which are custom packages against official
  • Decicated DDS browser mode for collections of non UT2004 DDS textures
  • Fully backed with a super fast SQL database allowing descriptions to be synced with any texture. You can now seach on these descriptions as well.
  • The DB ia auto pruning so if you delete anything from a texture pack or a custom directory it automatically removes the entry from the DB to stop it from filling up with orphand entries.
  • Just added 3d spining/dragable previews. they have a 2x2 setting so you can check your tiling.
  • The DB indexes all 13000 textures with added descriptions and ratings

You are not limited to just the textures in the UT2004 directory, this will also alow you to build searchable descriptions for any folder of DDS textures you have. Ive only just added shader support but thats in beta. I just made this during breaks from my usual programming work. I was thinking that as there are so many texture in the full package list i might ad and option for people to save their descriptions and merge other peoples. That way we could end up with a full community made master list.

Light and dark mode
A spinny cude thing for you to play with :)

UT General Bot Preference Manager 4.0 updated

Thumbnail

A mutator I wrote months ago, I didn't really have the time for a complete UI support back then.

Now after a major update, a roster UI has been added, so you can add / remove bots from pools more conveniently. Still manual editing is also allowed (usually for adding wildcard rules).

The mutator lets you customize up to 4 bot pools and specify bot counts to be randomly pulled from each pool. It combines the advantage of 'specify numbers' and 'bot roster' of the vanilla game.

Also blacklist and wildcards (*) are supported.

UT General How do I get mods on Unreal Tournament that I installed off of OldUnreal?

Apologies for being a complete noob to this, never messed with mods for this game. So I installed UT off of OldUnreal, and Im trying to get a mod (Unreal Fortress) running and I dont honestly know even where to get the folder to put the mod into. On my computer, all I was able to find was the game, I dont see a folder or anything like that. I've went on my file browser, looked up C:\unrealtournament, and it shows nothing. It is worth noting the mod is from before the OldUnreal patch came to be, but from my understanding that should have no impact on the ability for the mod to run. What am I not doing right to get this thing working?

UT General Have we been wrong all these years?

I think we have been incorrectly naming the protagonist of Unreal all these years. We call her (him) Prisoner 849, but are we truly correct on that?
.

When we embark on the great adventure that is Unreal, we are almost immediately greeted by the ship's alert system voice the moment we step out of that cell on the Vortex Rykers. And that voice, at least to my ears, alerts: "Prisoner 8, folder 9, escaping!".

I'll give you that whatever word is spoken after the "eight" is not completely and unequivocably a clear and crisp "folder", but I think it is certainly NOT a "four": it is surely longer.

Moreover, we never see more than 12 holding cells inside the Vortex Rykers. Sure, that gives us no definite answer as to how many prisoners were truly being transported on the ship, or what numbering system was in place, either at the ship itself, or at the unknown penitentiary system that held the prisoners. There may have been more holding cells in the ship, for all that we know. But there being hundreds of prisoners to warrant a # 849, if those numbers were based only on ship's capacity? I don't think so. Of course, then again the numbers could be based on the penitentiary system down at a planet, or multiple planets, for all we know.

I do think there certainly were more than 12 prisoners in the Vortex Rykers. I haven't counted them, but I think if I recollect correctly, one encounters more than 12 dead bodies (not counting the ones from the ISV-KRAN) along the way; moreover, surely there were casualties whose bodies were lost in Na Pali out of the way the protagonist goes through. Yeah, some could be Vortex Rykers crew, as we never get to see if the ship's crew wore a uniform as the ISV-KRAN crew did. Actually, we did (or did we?). The guy sitting on the chair in what seems to be the ship's deck, and gives his dying cry when we approach him, doesn't have any conspicuous uniform on him. We have no real way of knowing if he was part of the ship's crew; maybe he was a wounded prisoner on his way out of the ship, who sit on the chair to rest a while, and couldn't go on any longer. We also don't know if the people we hear being killed by the Skaarj Warrior beyond that closed door, were prisoners or crew.

But I'm straying from my point.

And nowhere in the game manual is the protagonist named as anything, including "Prisoner 849", so the community consensus on he/her having that denomination, is based largely or entirely on precisely that: nothing more than community consensus, based on who knows what.

But I disgress. Take your time to go listen intently to the comm voice on the Rykers, and make your own conclusions.

UT General How to fix this error from the UC2 PC Port?

Thumbnail

When I was following the second step of the guide from https://www.runesofwar.net/unreal-championship-2-leaked-pc-how-to/, I got an error (seen in the screenshot below). I tried to do trial and error when following. But it keeps getting the same result. I tried to use ChatGPT to research how to fix it, but I became more confused because whenever I tried to follow the instructions from ChatGPT to use it, doesn't even fixed at all. So, is there any way to fix this? I really want to play UC2 so badly, lol.

Hello all!

A friend and I were going through a box of his old Mac stuff, and we found this neat mousepad. :)

I’ve been researching it online but haven’t found much info yet. Thought someone here might know more. Would especially be interested in knowing how much it usually sells for, as he’s thinking of rehoming it and I’m not finding one like it on eBay. 🤔

Just to be clear: not trying to sell it here, just hoping maybe an Unreal enthusiast can tell me a little more about it.

Apologies for the mediocre photo. The lighting in here isn’t great. 😅

UT General UnrealDB for Unreal file verification and dependency identification

Thumbnail
image
24 Upvotes

Hey All,

I started a project to catalogue all unreal files for the unreal games, based on the info that they contain as opposed to file names. I have added many files myself and am still in the process of adding more but there is also a public upload form that the community can upload too. (zip/rar/7z/umod/ut2mod/ut4mod/uz/uz2/uz3 and the raw unreal files are supported)

Uploaded files will go into an upload bin awaiting admin review, so won't show up straight away, but note, even if the file is in the bin, additional copies won't get uploaded either.

If you have time, please upload any unreal files that you might have. Note, it does some pre-checks (client side) beforehand and only uploads files that the DB doesn't already have based on the files guids/hashes. The uploader can handle folders full of 100's of files at a time, but it will take longer to process.

It will also only accept files with the unreal magic tag (0x9E2A83C1) in it's header.

The idea is to have verified files available, not packages, as so many resources online have corrupt files or missing dependency’s.

https://unrealdb.com

There are many features still in development and will requires better optimizing but as it stands, most of the basic features are up and running now.

Am open to feedback, even criticism, as the project is mainly based on my wants rather than the communities at current, but I'm sure it can mature into something useful for the community too. There is a feedback option on each file and the main site in case any of the info is incorrect or need correcting, but most of the info is derived from the file itself rather the user entered.

At current, the site it plagued by bots and scrapers, so there are some heavy limits/restrictions being imposed, but these will loosen somewhat when real traffic becomes more popular.

UT General UT Launcher - Looking for feedback

Hello, a while ago I made a post here asking about the idea of creating a launcher for the Unreal series. I decided to give it a try and see how far I could take it.

I managed to include all the available titles, along with patches and community fixes for each one. There are still some things missing but I think it's in a pretty good state now and covers most of what I originally wanted to accomplish.

Here's a video showcase of the launcher and its features: https://youtu.be/v4L6oD87Mjs

Now for the part I need some feedback on.

While finishing up the project, I was consulting with a friend and the clankers, and I've become a little unsure about releasing it in its current state.

The main things that concern me are:

- Game availability: Epic has given its blessing for the community distribution of Unreal, UT99 and UT2004, but the launcher also supports Unreal II, UT2003, UT3 and UT4, which don't seem to have the same clearly supported distribution path

- CD keys: The launcher currently integrates a keygen for UT2003, UT2004 and UT3 based on existing open source implementations

- Game downloads: The launcher currently uses the Internet Archive as the source for downloading the game files

The project was made in good faith with the goal of making the Unreal series easier for people to get into and hopefully bringing some more attention to these games. I'm completely open to changing how some things are handled if there's a better way of doing it.

The reason I'm making this post instead of just releasing it is that I don't really know Epic's current stance toward all of these games. More importantly, I don't want something I've made to negatively affect the trust or relationships that existing communities have built with Epic.

That's pretty much what's holding me back from releasing it right now, so I'd like to hear what you guys think.

UT General High resolution unreal skins not working in multiplayer coop oldunreal gold 227 Patch

https://www.moddb.com/mods/high-resolution-unreal-skins

Is there any way to make this mod work for multiplayer? I want to know how to make it work specifically in Unreal Gold with Coop-Gameplay.

What I tried already: ading this line to unreal.ini file "ServerPackages=HDSkinsMutCustom". Now all enemies are shown for player 2 and all weapon models are also working, but then the movement completele broke, like player 2 is moving, but in reality player 2 is standing still for everyone else. Including enemies. And player 2 cannot shoot any weapon, can only switch with mouse wheel.

UT99 Published web version of UT99 - ut99.io

Hey guys,

Over the summer I built a web version of UT99 — check it out at ut99.io It supports cross-play too, so you can join existing UT99 servers directly from the browser.

It’s based on the WASM binary published by Icculus, which I patched for stability, along with a number of other fixes and improvements I was able to add.

I’m not planning to put much more work into it unless there’s enough interest, but I’m curious what y’all think. Give it a try!

UT General Question about UT99's HD Textures

I've searched around and either my Google Fu is weak or nobody has thought of this yet, though I wouldn't be surprised if someone brought this up before. So hear me out.

We have great HD textures for Unreal and Unreal Tournament, and skins to go along with it. Even moreso, blood/gore effect and bot AI mutators make this my go-to version for single player. But now that I'm looking at it, I keep feeling there's something missing. And then I realize...

Chaos UT. That was bundled with the game at some point. But if you use maps or mods that don't use those HD textures, you end up looking at an unpleasant mess of mismatch. Oldskool means you have the classic weapons with HD skins and Nali Weapons 3 seems to be built with this in mind, but there was no way modders were ever going to know we'd have rebuilt every default texture in the game.

Has anyone looked at the possibility of making HD variants of textures used commonly in mods like those used in mutators/maps built for Chaos?

UT99 UT2K26, my love letter to UT99

Thumbnail
video
192 Upvotes

About two years ago I decided to try and replicate UT99 movement in Unity and a couple of months ago I dusted off that project and named it UT2K26. I already have a proper name in mind, but for project-purposes this will do for now. On top of the UT99 movement I now also have UT99 bots, kind of, since I replicated the system UT99 uses for bots to navigate maps. In the past two weeks I've added new systems, done a lot of finetuning and it is starting to feel really nice.

I'm now at a point where I want to start showing the project some more, to gauge reactions and gather feedback. But at the same time I don't want to show all the cards just yet because I think it's better to show them all at once rather than with drip feeding. So here is a (sloppy) recreation of Deck16, and some bots having a (literal) blast. No human is playing here, only bots. There's some glitches present, but it's mostly visual and only happens during respawning (messed up some timing in the code).

The current goal is to create a vertical slice and publish it on Itch.io for everyone to play. It will have two maps, bot matches and will pretty much show off exactly what I have in mind for this. And despite the UT99 inspiration and project name, this won't be a recreation of UT99 in any way shape or form, apart from the movement and focus on InstaGib.
