UPDATE2
Final update: The seller is still doubling down on these absurd "Japanese market stock" excuses, so...
Since he refuses to acknowledge the obvious fakes and is actively pushing counterfeit goods as "100% original brand new items," this is officially going to the police. I’m filing a formal law enforcement report for fraud and distribution of counterfeit goods (which is also required by Allegro to release the buyer protection funds).
It’s a shame it had to end this way instead of a simple return, but trading fake retro gear as official Nintendo stock won't fly. Thanks again to everyone in the community for confirming all the red flags!
I also bought another console and this is 100% legit. The differences are obvious.
UPDATE
I contacted the seller and pointed out that the game label lacks the stamped number, the box is a modern reprint, and the GBC is missing its serial number sticker.
Here is what the seller replied:
"Hello. The offered product comes from the Japanese market. The product is brand new. We only had a few pieces of this hardware left as it is practically impossible to find anymore. The whole set was discounted, but it is fully authentic. This applies to both the console and the game."
This response makes zero sense to me:
The Game: The game and box I received are in English, not Japanese. Japanese Pokémon Gold has completely different box art and text. Calling an English repro "brand new stock from Japan" is a massive red flag.
The Console: He claims it's "brand new OEM stock," yet the serial number sticker is completely missing from the back cavity. Nintendo never shipped new consoles without serial numbers.
Looks like he's trying to dodge responsibility with a bogus explanation. I’m moving forward with a formal dispute on the platform (Allegro) for a full refund / return.
Any thoughts?
ORIGINAL POST
Hi everyone,
My girlfriend recently purchased a Game Boy Color (Dandelion Yellow) with Pokémon Gold for a gift for me. The seller told her that all of this is 100% authentic and original.
Now that I have everything in hand, I’m having serious doubts about the authenticity of the game and some parts of the console. I’d really appreciate your expertise to help me figure out what’s real and what’s fake before we open a dispute with the seller/platform.
