Tip Steam Frame + Steam on Gentoo
I received my Steam Frame today. I was a little discouraged about the "no linux support" at this time.
Well it works. Using Kernel 7.2.8 the frame wifi dongle is supported. Its recognized by the steam client and it can be used.
All Valve Software are Betas (Steam, SteamVR, Frame Operating system)
steam had to be started with the -pipewire option to allow video grabbing on the host machine. Also a hint from another post, I started steamVR manually before trying to connect.
I used remote play and tested:
- Path to Thalamus (Windows Version with Proton has VR)
- Moss 2
- Halflife Alyx (sound cracking a little)
The video part was fine in all 3 Games, I could not notice input lag.
My Gentoo System
I7 12700K
64GB Ram
Nvidia 4090
KDE + Wayland
So far it has been a surprisingly good experience for day one. After a game was played Steam tends to get a little unstable, but a steam restart helps.
this guide was very helpful:

I did not need the systemd service as setting the region with iw seems to be permanent

Support Gentoo (OpenRC): ath10k Wi-Fi doesn't see my router (phone does), phy limited to channels 1-11 even with wireless-regdb + AR 😿
Hardware: Acer Aspire laptop, 2 cores, 11 GB RAM, Atheros ath10k_pci Wi-Fi (wlp2s0).
System: Gentoo OpenRC, kernel 6.18.50-gentoo-dist-bin, NetworkManager 1.56.1, linux-firmware, wireless-regdb and iw installed.
Problem:
nmcli device wifi list only shows my neighbors' networks (channels 1, 6, 11), never my own ISP router (2.4 GHz). My phone sees and connects to it fine, so it's not a range issue.
What I found:
- `iw reg set AR` works globally (country AR: 2402-2482 MHz), but it resets to 00 after reboot.
- phy#0 stays at "country 99" with only 2402-2472 MHz, so channels 12 and 13 are not allowed on this chip.
- dmesg: "ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a direct regpair map / Country alpha2 being used: 00 / Regpair used: 0x69".
- The radio is enabled (nmcli radio wifi: enabled) and the driver loads fine.
My suspicion: the router is on channel 12/13 and the card's EEPROM regdomain blocks them. I don't have admin access to the router to change the channel.
Questions:
Can I get ath10k to allow channels 12-13 under AR, or is it locked by the EEPROM/board file?
What's the right way to persist the country setting on OpenRC (modprobe option cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=AR, or something else)?
Anything else I should check? (I can post `iw dev wlp2s0 scan` output.)
Workaround for now: USB tethering from my phone.

Discussion Is this technically possible?
I have seen several gentoo peeps installing the CachyOS kernel, and other variants, like the vanilla-sources. So, after that tech journalist complained enough, they made a distro with his philosophy and therefore its own kernel version. Yes, I am talking about LCOS. I wonder if we can get that rustless or stainless, however you want to call it to run on gentoo. It would be even crazier to base that kernel on a more gentoo specific version with patches and all.

Discussion Considering trying it out
I've been having lots of thoughts of trying out Gentoo on my main pc, as a daily driver. Is there anything I should seriously take into consideration before doing that? Or is there any tips you would like to share, if you've been in a similar position?

Support Setting i18n variable in dracut.conf causes intermittent keyboard input failure
Hello all,
Set up a recent Gentoo system and wanted to setup plymouth. During the plymouth setup, I tried to pass the -R flag to rebuild my initramfs and ended up with an i18n not set error. Following a few Gentoo forums, I set the i18n variable. After rebuilding the initramfs, I rebooted and noticed my display manager wasn't loading and the login prompt was duplicated a few times (see picture).
I go to type my username and notice some characters were missing. First thought is maybe I didn't press the keys hard enough. After verifying, I tried booting into live media and commenting out the i18n line and rebuilding my initramfs. It wouldn't even with the --force flag because the i18n variables weren't set.
After reading a bug report from dracut, I configured the i18n variable according to someone's solution, rebuilt the initramfs and rebooted. Same issue. Until this variable is correctly set or Gentoo fixes the i18n issue, my system is unusable.
In the meantime I have another working Gentoo system I can try to copy the i18n variable from. If it works I'll post an edit.
Edit: i18n variables are not set in my other rig either. Not really sure how the initramfs was constructed if dracut requires this variable.
Edit 2: opening a forum on Gentoo. It can be found here. This page is linked within the forum as well.
Development arxy: optional prebuilt Arch subsystem for proprietary apps — also useful on Gentoo musl
Hi everyone.
First time sharing something publicly, so I'll keep it humble. I collaborate on Neko Void, specifically on the musl images. There I hit the classic musl problem: glibc binaries don't run as-is, and proprietary software can't be rebuilt. That includes Steam and many closed-source apps.
I know Gentoo also has musl profiles/stages, so some of you suffer exactly the same problem as Alpine/Chimera/Void-musl users. And even on Gentoo glibc, there's the second case: huge or closed-source stuff where a full compile just isn't worth it.
I made a small tool called arxy for those two cases. It's not trying to replace Portage. Think of it as a companion: a minimal Arch rootfs (~130MB in /var/lib/arxy/root) to install prebuilt binaries when you need them.
Why it might help, on Gentoo musl and glibc:
- On Gentoo musl: same gap as Alpine, glibc-only binaries (Steam, Spotify, Electron apps, Telegram) just run inside the Arch subsystem, no rebuild needed.
- On Gentoo glibc: skip the long compile when you just want the binary now, without the weight of Flatpak.
- Uses real pacman, so dependencies are shared between packages. Lighter than one-runtime-per-app.
- Level 1 uses bwrap, fallback to Level 2 (chroot + ld-linux) if no userns. Shares /home, /tmp, GPU, kernel, native speed.
- No security sandbox, just a compat layer. Your Gentoo stays in charge.
- Auto-creates .desktop launchers. AUR -bin only (prebuilt, no toolchains inside).
- Tested on Alpine, Chimera and Void (glibc + musl). On Gentoo, glibc and especially musl, I need your test reports. I may be wrong on details, corrections welcome.
sudo arxy setup
arxy install telegram-desktop
arxy install --aur spotify
arxy run steam
arxy update
Repo: https://github.com/SrDicov/arxy
I respect that many choose Gentoo precisely to compile everything with their USE flags. This is only for the gap where there is no source, or the compile isn't worth it. If there's a more Gentoo way to solve this, please tell me. Still learning, any feedback welcome.

Support Steam issues
Hey there!
Been using Gentoo for a while, no complaints, and I tried migrating from a Flatpak Steam to System-native Steam install. Everything is installed, but running `/usr/bin/steam` fails with error `app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/x86_64/master not installed`.
I tried redownloading the flatpak steam copy for the setup process, if it was necessary, but following a first login/boot, removing Flatpak Steam causes the issue to reoccur. I did fully reboot after uninstalling the flatpak steam copy, fully unmerging/re-emerging the system install after doing so, but no dice.
Can't find anything about this issue online, so figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has come past this.
USE flags for games-util/steam-launcher
+ desktop-portal, dialogs, joystick, pulseaudio, steamruntime, udev, video_cards_nvidia, vulkan, wayland
- steamvr, trayicon
Do I need to change a dependency of steam-launcher to force a native runtime? I already have abi_x86_32 enabled globally. Using stable Gentoo (excl. some unmasked ~amd64 keyword packages), KDE-Plasma, wayland
EDIT: Yes, I have read the gentoo wiki page on this, and referenced numerous other reddit posts related to this/relevant to this. I just genuinely can't find a solution, thus, I am here.
Also, I also have Lutris installed on my system, and a few game runners through flatpak (Sober, Prism, Twintail, and a couple others), IDK if that can cause issues.
EDIT 2: Nevermind, found out the issue. I had made a script in/usr/local/bin/steam that I had completely forgotten about to make using steam application files easier for me. It had overridden the executable in /usr/bin/steam so that's why I had the issue. Completely on me, my bad
Discussion Finally did it!
Very happy to be here :) I'm going to start learning how to rice next

Story Built Linux 6.18.52 manually with gentoo-sources
Built 6.18.52 from gentoo-sources and kept it alongside my existing dist kernels.
Imported the running 6.18.50 config, rebuilt 6.18.52 manually, stripped the modules, and kept each kernel versioned for independent boot entries.
uname -r 6.18.52-gentoo
Basic process:
Install gentoo-sources-6.18.52
Import the config from my running kernel:
zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
make olddefconfig
Build it on a separate build LV
Install stripped modules:
make INSTALL_MOD_STRIP=1 modules_install
Copy bzImage / System.map / config to /boot
Generate the initramfs with dracut
Add a versioned GRUB entry and boot-test it
Result:
uname -r
6.18.52-gentoo
Plan: 6.18.52-gentoo 6.18.6x-gentoo 6.18.7x-gentoo
I'll keep using dist kernels between these source-built checkpoints.

Discussion Thinking of swapping to quad-core Ivybridge 3632QM CPU on T420
My T420 is currently sandybridge, and as such everything is compiled with -march=sandybridge and -mtune=sandybridge not to mention the cpuid2cpuflags USE flags and my kernel being optimized for Sandybridge.
When upgrading to Ivybridge, do I need to remerge the world with x86_64-generic then again to Ivybridge or are the two similar enough?

Discussion should I switch to Gentoo on my ThinkPad?
for a long time I have been watching some features that gentoo offers but im still not sure if I should switch, mostly because my processor is not that strong to be compiling all the time.
also due to my full encrypted disk im not sure how hard could it be to partition it to dual boot arch and Gentoo, i was thinking on just adding an ssd and keep arch on my hdd
I have been using arch for almost 2 years and mostly have only used binaries and I would like to try compiling more, but not on arch
I have a T480 i5 8th gen

Support Issue with Grub on first install

I've been trying for a while now to install Gentoo in VirtualBox though no matter what I've tried until now I couldn't get grub to work properly after rebooting in the final step. Even if I hold shift/ esc whilst rebooting it doesnt seem to do anything. I made sure I uncommented the line for
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu and then ran again grub.mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
The curious thing is that changing the value in GRUB_TIMEOUT=x to something else does indeed change how fast it boots, so why would the line of the timeout style not take effect?
running lsblk -o name,mountpoints returns:
sda1 /efi
sda2 [SWAP]
sda3 /
So I assume that my partitions were mounted correctly. Somebody suggested that grub could be installing to boot since in the output of grub.mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg I get "Found linux image: /boot/" though my kernel boots as an efi stub. What can I do in this case, if that's indeed the issue? I'm very much a beginner so I'm not sure how to proceed

Discussion First Time Installing Gentoo On My Primary PC
My first time im installed Gentoo in my laptop kvm virt manager 2023 i think,
I heard Gentoo Linux is from Mental Outlaw, that gentoo is powerfull distro , because it compiled everything from source, set up and installed aplication from that we liked.
Journey continues and im installed Artix Linux Open-RC from Luke smith that he recommened because kinda similar to Arch Linux but without Systemd, and im using in my laptop and it run really well.
And then after Using Cachy OS about 3 Months this year , im ready to tried Gentoo again after 3 years long,
I followed Gentoo wiki and a little bit a help from chatgpt for installed Cachy OS Hyprland config from Noctalia , and applied to my Gentoo System, Im so happy about idle RAM it's 1 GB after booted for the first time. For gaming still compiling Steam from now, i wanna see a differences between Cachy OS and Gentoo.
Specs:
MoDT ToPC (sometimes it will called Eyring Motherboard)
i9 12900H Engineering Sample
EVGA 3070ti FTW3
2666Mhz 16x2 DDR4
Is there any advice for me to improving my system or any tweaking in my etc/portage/make.conf xd?
Current make.conf
in the future, i will build GPU Passthrough with Virt Manager. Gentoo system will use Integrated GPU From Intel (im disabled from mobo for now) and 3070ti for Windows VMs,
Happy Compiling ~
