How to fix crashes when google-chrome corrupts your font cache

If you use Google Chrome, you may notice that after a recent upgrade, various KDE applications crash, and plasmashell gets stuck in a crash loop if you reboot. Chrome is writing corrupt fontconfig cache data that's making things go weird. If this is happening to you, rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig and reboot, this should get your system working again. Then after launching Chrome, pop open Konsole and run rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig again to erase the corrupt data before it can mess anything else up (and then close the Konsole window you just opened since it will have the corrupt data loaded in potentially and could crash at any time).

I recently switched to Kubuntu, and wow, I'm impressed.

My first Linux distro was Ubuntu, and I had a really bad experience with GNOME—it's a great desktop environment, but it just wasn't for me.

Back then, I was new to the Linux scene, and I thought GNOME was synonymous with Ubuntu, so I switched to Fedora with KDE and loved the desktop.

But—and here comes the “but”—Fedora updates quite frequently, and every update would break something or cause something to stop working, etc. So they recommended Ubuntu to me, but of course, “I just don’t like the Ubuntu desktop,” and they said, “What are you talking about? You can have KDE on Ubuntu,” and here we are.

I like Ubuntu’s stability and the fact that there’s basically information and documentation online for just about everything related to Ubuntu, and with KDE, I can customize it to my liking without worrying that an update will break something.

The only thing I haven’t tried it for is video games. How does it perform?

Middle mouse button issues when playing games and using a browser

Hi guys,

Switched to Kubuntu recently after my whole life of using Windows.

I like playing games, specifically map based strategy games like Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron 4 etc. Back on Windows, when i would click and hold my middle mouse button i could pan around the map in these. On Kubuntu this doesnt work, the game doesnt react when i hold middle mouse button. Also when i'm in a browser and hold the middle mouse button, when dragging left it will go back to the previous window. I want to change that aswell. Basically what i want is for my middle mouse button to behave like on Windows.

I've googled these issues but cant seem to find anyone with a similar problem. Does anyone know how i could fix this?

Temporarily disable keyboard?

My cat likes to sit on my laptop which isn't a huge deal. Except for the fact that she knows more keyboard shortcuts than I do and messes everything up. I was wondering if there was a way that I could temporarily disable the keyboard, possibly a widget? My current solution has to just been minimizing the windows or trying to lock my computer which is a bit inconvenient. Thanks!

Is this normal

Kubuntu 26.04, KDE Plasma 6.6.6, Wayland, AMD graphics, kernel 6.17.0-1032-oem, Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD.

The system was working normally before the recent update. After the update, shortly after boot/login, the entire system can become completely unresponsive: mouse/touchpad stops, keyboard input stops, Wi-Fi stops, nothing can be clicked, and after some time the fan becomes very loud. A forced shutdown is required.

I'm trying to determine whether this is a kernel/AMD/KWin/Wayland regression. Has anyone experienced something similar after the recent Kubuntu 26.04 updates?

Switching from Windows 11 to Linux (Kubuntu) for the first time.
I have the Kubuntu iso burned USB drive ready, I've backed up just about every file I could think to save, I've used the "try Kubuntu" feature to check it out and it seems right up my alley.

Still, for some reason, I'm stuck on the fence. I would rather not Dual-Boot, as my internal 500GB SSD is already near-full with nonsense. I would like to completely wipe the drive for a fresh Kubuntu installation. I do not want to purchase a new drive and cannot *really* think of anything I would truly NEED microslop's mess of an OS for. But I still have the heebie jeebies about making such a large change to my PC though.

Is there ANYTHING I've missed that I really need to know or do beforehand? Or should I just make the penguin's plunge and deal with my issues as they come up, trial-by-fire style.

KubeVirt VM and Good & Friction features

Hello Guru's, I have a few questions, please help me answer them:

  1. If I have existing full fledge old VMs on my existing KVM hosts (VM's not inside the PODs), will I be to manage them via Kubevirt?
  2. If I have a RHOV environment, is it necessary for me to use Kubevirt to create a VM? If yes, why, if not, then when to use KubeVirt to create VMs?
  3. What is the difference between a regular VM and a VM created via Kubevirt?

Also, I'd love to get your candid take: What aspect of KubeVirt has impressed you the most, and where do you feel it faces the biggest friction points or challenges?

Why is Kubuntu running games much worse than Windows 11?

Apparently this is supposed to be way less bloated than Windows 11, but I'm getting WAY worse performance (30-100fps on Windows 11, 1-3fps on Kubuntu). Could well be my own fault since Ie never used this before.

Kubuntu 24.04 interrupted upgrade to 26.04, stuck in BusyBox

As title says. The upgrade got stuck, and I (stupidly) rebooted. Now the system wont boot at all. It shows a Busybox console (initramfs). I typed exit, and got the following message: ALERT! UUID=<some uuid> does not exist. Dropping to shell. I have a linux liveusb that I can boot from and mount the drive. I looked at the /etc/fstab file, and saw the same uuid as in the error message. I'm kinda stuck at what to do next. Please help?

New Kubuntu/Linux User... genuine advice plz

Thumbnail

Over the last week I have dual booted and tested quite a few distros and have settled on Kubuntu as the best starting point for myself. Scrolling reddit for ideas made me realise people keep promoting their own apps and promoting their favourite distros. Having just set up my current desktop last night, I am looking for genuine advice for a new Kubuntu/Linux user, particularly around reliable, trusted and tested open source applications people use to replace those of closed source or big tech apps. I am also wanting genuine advice in the more techhy side, as someone who is usually pretty tech-savvy (at least so I thought before I started this journey), around best things to learn at the start. All of this is a bit of a ramble, but I hope it makes sense the kind of advice I am looking for :) Attached above is the basic layout I have set up for myself (KDE is so great)

Will the Calamares installer survive in Kubuntu?

One of the things I really like in Kubuntu (in addition to all the other things) is that it uses the Calamares installer which gives me good brrfs setup out of the box. The Subiquity installer Ubuntu went with does not for some reason.

I'm a heavy user of snapshots and have been using btrfs on my machines for many years and I won't give that up. With Ubuntu I now have to do the move to a sub volumes setup after install. It's just annoying having to go through that every time.

Does anyone know if there are any plans out there in Kubuntu World to follow the mother ship in this regard?

I sure hope not!

Ubuntu 26.04 + AMD Radeon Vega 11 on HP EliteDesk 705 G5 — black screen/amdgpu errors fixed by BIOS setting

Ubuntu 26.04 + AMD Radeon Vega 11 on HP EliteDesk 705 G5 — black screen/amdgpu errors fixed by BIOS setting

I wanted to document a solution that took me quite a while to find, in case it helps someone else.

I have an HP EliteDesk 705 G5 SFF with integrated AMD Radeon Vega 11 / Picasso / Raven 2 graphics.

Symptoms

Ubuntu would sometimes:

  • boot to a black screen
  • start only with nomodeset
  • fall back to low-resolution/software graphics
  • fail to initialize the AMDGPU driver

The kernel logs included errors such as:

amdgpu ... probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22

and AMD PSP/GFX initialization errors.

The same computer also had an intermittent Radeon driver problem in Windows 11, which initially made me suspect a hardware problem.

Hardware tests

I tested the system with:

  • MemTest86 — 0 errors
  • HP Processor diagnostic — passed
  • HP Memory diagnostic — passed
  • HP Storage diagnostic — passed
  • HP System Board diagnostic — passed

The fix

The breakthrough was in the HP BIOS/UEFI settings.

I found:

Legacy Support → Enabled

I changed it to:

Legacy Support → Disabled

I left Secure Boot disabled.

After changing this setting and booting Ubuntu normally, I no longer needed nomodeset.

The AMDGPU driver initialized correctly and Ubuntu recognized the graphics as:

AMD Picasso / Raven 2 / Radeon Vega series

The system was able to run at 3840 × 2160 @ 60 Hz.

Hardware

HP EliteDesk 705 G5 SFF
AMD Radeon Vega 11 / Picasso / Raven 2
PCI ID: 1002:15D8
Ubuntu 26.04
DisplayPort

If you have this HP system and are seeing black screens, nomodeset, low resolution, or AMDGPU initialization errors, it may be worth checking the BIOS Legacy Support setting before assuming the Radeon hardware has failed.

This was the setting that solved the problem on my system.

Hi everyone !

I want something kde based and installed kubuntu as it is ubuntu based comes with everything preinstalled like drivers, fonts, etc etc, otherwise the manual struggle i had to do on debian.

The problem is i don't want snap packages and only prefer .deb packages so i prefer as much as i can for deb format and only some 3-4 apps i use arent available via this format so i prefer flatpak for them. And upon just recent new kubuntu installation i have done sudo aot update & upgrade then restarted then started removing snap packages one by one and upon restarting after it i was welcomed with this screen saying "plasma shell is broken and contact developer" and i hit random keys on my keyboard and got this instructions as in the image.

The question why do kubuntu installation easily brokes if i remove snap packages i have done the same process of snap removal on ubuntu too but it doesn't break (but since i prefer kde>gnome i installed kubuntu just today and this ?)

Bluetooth Neckband is not connecting on a dual boot Laptop

I recently installed Kubuntu on my laptop, earlier using windows 11. I kept it in dual boot.

My bluetooth neckband and speaker was connected to windows and worked just fine. But after I boot into Kubuntu, the neckband is just connecting for 2 seconds and then disconnecting. Though the bluetooth speaker is working just fine, connected on the first try, didn't gave problem.

I asked Gemini and tried to do as it says--

cd /mnt/win_c/Windows/System32/config/

sudo chntpw -e SYSTEM

cd ControlSet001\Services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys

ls

There was folder matching my laptop's Bluetooth adapter MAC address (e.g., 123456789abc)

cd 123456789abc

ls

There was no 32 character key. So it suggested me following

hex <NECKBAND_MAC_ADDRESS> got the key there, copied it. Then in konsole

sudo ls /var/lib/bluetooth/

cd /var/lib/bluetooth/<LAPTOP_MAC>/

ls but konsol couldn't get access to cd /var/lib/bluetooth/<LAPTOP_MAC>/

So I opened it through Dolphine with required administrator password. Went into <NECKBAND_MAC>/info and opened with a text editor and under [LinkKey] put the 32 character key. removed the spaces between 16 paired characters. Looks like this- Key=0123456789ABCDEF0123456789ABCDEF

Then saved it and sudo systemctl restart bluetooth

It is still not working. restart the laptop too...Still nothing. I would really appreciate if someone can help.

I've tried the instructions it gave me. This started when I was waiting for something to download and the screen went to sleep and when I turned it back on, I saw the screen in the first image.
