Discussion Experiences with coding on a Thinkpad

Hello, I was wondering whether Thinkpads offer more comfort for coders than other laptops, I currently use a dell precision 5550 laptop (which is designed for windows and 3d stuff not coding) and I despise coding in it (I run Fedora btw) , somehow it just does not feel right also the keyboard is flat and I mess up the letters a lot of times, I am considering switching to a Thinkpad and just wanted to see your experiences with it and whether its noticably better for the coder in terms of the keyboard and other aspects than other laptops (especially thin laptops like my dell)

Discussion X270 or Edge 15 Which ThinkPad should I buy?

Hi guys, I’m newbie here

I’m looking to buy a ThinkPad for using Linux. I will mainly use it for basic things, like learning Linux, programming in R, reading and writing documents in LaTeX, watching YouTube, browsing, etc.

I’m looking on Facebook Marketplace and these are the cheapest options I found:

  • X270: i5-6300U, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Intel HD 520, 12.5" display, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, SD card reader and dual battery. $163.65
  • ThinkPad Edge 15: AMD Athlon II dual-core, 8 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Radeon HD 4250, 15.6" display, DVD drive, HDMI, VGA, USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. $78.10

I know the Edge 15 is very old. Would it be a bad idea to buy one today, even if I only want to use it for basic things?

I’m thinking the X270 is probably the better option, but it’s more than twice the price. Is $163.65 a good price for the X270, or should I keep looking for something cheaper?

I've had my X60 Tablet for about a week now, and I've really been enjoying using it!

I love the classic form factor and industrial style of these older machines, even if they aren't quite as modular or moddable out of the box as some of the T-series laptops.

To squeeze as much daily-driver usability out of it as possible on a budget, I went ahead and tracked down a complete, intact X61 Tablet motherboard and swapped it into the X60t chassis, pairing it with a 250GB SSD. Flashing Middleton’s BIOS went smoothly, though getting everything set up definitely took a bit more patience than expected.

The biggest hurdle so far has been RAM: finding reasonably priced DDR2 SODIMMs is no joke these days. I managed to score a 2x4GB kit (yes, the unofficial 8GB DDR2 support is a lifesaver!) which should be arriving tomorrow. Getting back to a native 64-bit architecture has been great, running 64-bit AntiX with i3wm for when I'm working on code. I haven’t noticed a massive performance leap just yet, but I'm chalking that up to running on limited RAM for the moment and still needing to fine-tune things.

I haven't tackled any of the Wacom touchscreen or digitizer features yet either; since I've been laser-focused on squeezing out raw performance first, it just hasn't felt necessary to attack yet.

Does anyone else still daily drive one of these vintage machines? What are you guys doing to keep your older ThinkPads relevant and usable for modern workflows?

Discussion Debian on a Thinkpad Yoga 11e works really well!

Hiya! I've had this old laptop that's been sitting around since college, and after a little bit of a hassle with the power cord, it's working really well! Now, it was running windows 8.1 on it, but that's just completely gone.

The specs are about 4 GB of ram, Intel Celeron N2930 @2.17 GHz, Intel Atom Processor Z36xxx/Z37xxx @ 0.85 GHz, and about 450 GB of internal storage.

I'm running the latest version of Debian on it (which is 13 at the time of writing this) with Lxqt as the DE! I'm pretty happy with the installation.

Discussion Need ThinkPad Buying Suggestion

Hello

Final year student here. I need to buy a thinkpad within 140k BDT (850 USD).

I mainly work with web dev, currently using arch with hyprland, but thinking of moving to a more stable distro like Fedora, as I have to enter the professional development work (wish me luck to even get a job in this harsh market!).

I will also run some local models, but

I have chosen thinkpad over nvidia GPU laptops because of its compatibility with linux, and durability.

Has anyone been using a thinkpad? any help would be much appreciated. thank you:)

Discussion ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 AMD (21T0) — has anyone adjusted the hinge tension?

Hi! The hinges on my E14 Gen 7 (21T0) are extremely stiff. Has anyone here actually opened or adjusted these hinges?

Is there any way to reduce the hinge tension, or do they need to be replaced?

If you have photos of the hinges removed from the laptop or know the FRU/part number, I’d really appreciate it.

Discussion thinkpad to upgrade recommendation

I have an old ThinkPad with pretty poor battery life, and I’m thinking of upgrading it instead of buying a new laptop. Right now it has 12GB RAM and around 500GB SSD storage.

I’m planning to install Linux Mint since I’m a complete beginner to Linux, and I’ve heard it’s one of the best beginner-friendly distros.

I mainly want recommendations for:

A good replacement battery

Whether I should upgrade the RAM further or keep it at 12GB

Any SSD/storage upgrades worth doing

General modifications or tweaks to make the ThinkPad run better with Linux Mint

I’ll mostly use it for learning Linux, kernel level programming, web browsing, media, and maybe some creative work.

Would love to hear your suggestions and beginner tips for using Linux Mint on an older ThinkPad. Thanks

Discussion Sharing ThinkPad Utils - Fan Control, System Monitoring and Management in Linux

I built ThinkUtils as an UI for fan control because the stock auto fan control on my P1 Gen 4 runs too hot, then I turned it into an application with more features. Just wanted to share it here. Features: manual/auto/max fan modes (levels 0–7), battery charge thresholds (e.g., 40–80%), CPU governor + Turbo Boost toggle, and a real-time system monitor.

Discussion Switching to Linux - Need a beginner-friendly distro with strong driver support!

Hey everyone, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T460s, and every time I clean flash Windows, I have to manually update all the drivers. It made me wonder — how does Linux handle drivers? Is it easier there?

I'm planning to finally shift from Windows to Linux, but I’m looking for a distro that’s beginner-friendly and has solid driver support. For example, on Windows, if I don’t install the proper trackpad driver, I can only use basic left and right clicks, and none of the gestures work [WANT THE FINGERPRINT SENSOR SUPPORT TOO] I really want to avoid that kind of issue on Linux.

Would love to hear your suggestions! Thanks a lot in advance!

Discussion Do you use Windows for anything?

Say I don't really need Windows for the stuff I do, but my T480 came with a licence, so I wonder if it may have any use cases or it's just a waste of space.

When I got this TP, I went to update the Thunderbolt fw... I expected it to be a smoother process under Windows, except it's completely broken there, while under any Live distro one can do that with 2 clicks (or a command). So that's one reason gone.

What else can there be? Running some program that won't work under Wine? Maybe some game? (Not that this book can run games much anyway.) If somebody needs to borrow the computer for something?

I was thinking maybe it could be used as a foreground for a "real" hidden OS, but that sounds like a hassle to set up and use, and not very useful for a regular computer.

Btw I'm not trying to sound elitist or anything. My new desktop doesn't have Windows on it so I'm genuinely thinking whether it's a good idea to keep one installation as backup for oddball cases.

I used to go between Windows and Linux back and forth in the XP to 8 era, and but I don't want all that telemetry and ads and crap in 10/11.
