So, about that Paper Mario port

Namely how it doesn't exist? :/

Is there some reason it hasn't been ported to 3DS yet after having been decomped? Could be start some kind of financial incentive for it to encourage some programmer (not vibe coder) to bring it to the 3DS? Feels like it would be perfect for the platform.

Go do it then.

Porting something takes hours upon hours of work. It's not as simple as "paper mario is decomped, where is the port?!"

Thats one part of the process, but the person volunteering dozens of hours to create it is also needed. If none of the relatively few people experienced enough to port it are up for doing it, it wont be done.

The first recomp for pc has only been out for a few days, and pc is the one its the easiest to make one for. 3ds is significantly less powerful and going to be a while. We dont even have an android version yet

It’s not a recomp, it’s a port.

Edit: For all of you who don’t understand the difference, this is from the Zelda64Recomp GitHub FAQ:

How is this related to the decompilation project?

Unlike N64 ports in the past, this project is not based on the source code provided by a decompilation of the game. This is because static recompilation bypasses the need for decompiled source code when making a port, allowing ports to be made  without source code. However, the reverse engineering work done by the decompilation team was invaluable for providing some of the enhancements featured in this project. For this reason, the project uses headers and some functions from the decompilation project in order to make modifications to the game. Many thanks to the decompilation team for all of the hard work they've done.

You have to recompile it to make a port

When people say “recomp” they’re referring to static recompilation, which does not require full decompilation.

PaperBoat is a native port based on a complete decompilation. I hope this clears it up for you.

Static recompilations don’t work most of the time. It’s not as simple as simply recompiling for pc because the game code has platform specific functionality/assumptions. Thats why we need to port.

Okay…? That has very little to do with what I was saying. I was clarifying that PaperBoat isn’t a recomp.

Do it

Ok, can you actually explain why using AI for a 3ds port is bad? There's been 4 games that have been successfully ported to the 3ds with AI:

G-Diffuzer (F-Zero X port with 3d functionality made in 2 WEEKS by Claude)

Link to The Past port

Mario Kart 64 port

Zelda Minish Cap port

The latter 3 even take advantage of the bottom screen, have top widescreen support, and other features like speedup and built in updating

Recomps and custom console ports of games is what AI is most useful for, there are several reasons to hate AI, but this is not one of them, people who hate it blindly like this slow down game ports because the people who would try to make the ports with AI are discouraged by the community at large

the decomp community got along just fine without needing to rely on the slop machine before

Uhh a recomp/port can be made without AI, but they are few and far between, with ai in the mix anyone can now make a port of a game to basically any device with relative ease, is anyone actually capable of explaining why an AI 3ds port is inferior to a human made one?

1

u/MegaScout 7d ago

using AI makes it inferior by default. plus the decomps made before AI are also some of the best ones out there

2

u/Awkward-Magician-522 7d ago

Ok, so i asked how is it inferior. And your response is "because its made by ai" this is circular reasoning.

You could argue the AI ports might be more bug prone or lack features since a programmer can do it by hand wit greater accuracy, but give enough revisions the AI will be able to nuke enough of the bugs to provide a playable experience in a much smaller amount of time

AI will always be inferior to actually fucking doing it yourself you AI loser

Lol. Depends who’s doing it. A seasoned decomper who spends 4 years coming out with a recomp? Sure. But show me someone who can get it done in a week the way an AI can. Even if it’s only 90% of the value still way faster than a human could’ve done it. And give it just a little bit of time will be nearly if not the same level as if a human did it.

Exactly, I see too much blind hate for good uses of AI, people seem unable to seperate the bad parts of ai they hate and the good uses.

Besides especially on the 3ds or other consoles with small homebrew communities there arent a lot of programmers spending their effort on such an obscure project. Decomps and PC ports are a much more broad space that lots of people want, so those get priority 1st

If you look at ports for the 3ds made before say 2023-2024 before ai got good enough, youll see that there were NOT that many 3ds ports at all

Automation enables faster production, but with higher chance of mistakes that have to be manually found and fixed. Very few decomps were done at first because ti took so many man hours by skilled people. Automation is lowering the floor for access to learn, but a lot of people are also being lazy about the tools and not training their brains to learn to do the work manually as needed.

Also, AI has caused a lot of various problems recently. Power bills are up, environmental hazards from the data centers are up, component prices are up. Multiple stock markets are dominated by AI stuff that's not really making any money and that bubble is going to burst and likely be as bad as a century ago in the USA. This industry is burning through money with nothing to actually show for it and it's a great example of how unfettered capitalism just leads to enshittification and ruin for the majority of people.

I dont know if you know this but genai (which is what all the vibe coding is) is not only ruining any human made creativity but also our entire fucking planet with their shit ass datacenters. Fuck GenAI and fuck anything that uses it. The romhack community has lived and flourished before it and will live and flourish after its inevitable death.

I don’t really care :D I’m not the one begging others to work for me.

I’m not defending OP, but you’re kinda being a douche bag too.
