any good "arena" fps games even the ones created by small developers?
i see tons of games posted by beginner developers or whatever you would call them in this reddit, obviously cant check every game by myself. what ones u tried and u could recommend to play?
i dont care if its single player, roguelite or whatever. i just want to occupy my time with fun gameplay and want it to be at least a little challenging

Quetoo. I’m the developer. It is .. actively developed, to say the least.
Quake changed my life as a teenager. I’m now a professional SWE with 25 years experience, and moonlight as a game dev. If you want to experience what Quake, Quake2 and Quake3 were like in their prime, check out Quetoo.

I am very intrigued for lan parties.
Edit: I've ran warfork in a LAN with mixed results, my personal LAN group is more of a DOTA crew than an FPS crew. But I like trying to influence by introducing them to fun FPS games.

It is not on Steam, correct. It has its own cross platform updater. I may add Steam support someday.

just out of curiosity as an uninitiated user, what is Quetoo exactly? is it a complete rewrite of Quake? because i checked the website and, outside of regular updates and the fact that it's open source, i don't really understand why I would play this over base Quake, am i missing something?
(edit: glancing over the github explains a lot more, i'm still a little confused but i can see that Quetoo is more of an "engine project" than a "game project")

Full realtime per-pixel lighting, soft shadowmaps, parallax occlusion mapping, 40Hz tick, in-game editor, dramatically improved mapping workflow, 26 maps and growing, including a dozen high quality remakes plus originals. 4 mods out of the box. I could go on. Oh yea, and IT’S FREE.
Most of this is all spelled out on the website as well, tho we could do a better job of marketing it. It’s why there’s a posting for a Community Lead right on the site 😂
But yea, it’s all volunteer made by other people who, like me, love Quake.

thanks!! now i'm even more curious:
when you say, "per pixel", if i where a map designer and I use my own low-res textures for a level, would the lighting be confined to the pixels on the textures themselves?? because as a pixel artist and texture designer that sounds like a big plus!

Your textures need normalmaps and specularmaps to take advantage of the lighting. We already have over 2000 textures tho, including comprehensive remakes of Quake and Quake2 textures, and you can make maps with those right out of the box.

I'm still on UT99, 2k4 and 2014. A new modern take I've been enjoying a lot is Galaxy Grudge. You can find it on steam, very early in development, but the devs are very active and communicate everything they change on their discord and the steam page. It's very very very early in development, but actually very fun with what is available.

I say 2014 cause that's when it dropped, but it's UT4 the official community based UT game that got abandoned by Epic because Fortnite required the entire Armada, apparently. It's still very active through UT4UU community and has a reasonable player base to this day, with loads of content. It's completely free! Go have a look!

It's still live in the community. Epic doesn't officially back it, unfortunately, but they did allow us to take the reigns. I still hold onto hope that some Epic devs will some day come back to us, and put UT back in the spot light. Wishful dreaming, but you never know lol hey! Maybe I'll see yuh in the arena! Happy fragging!

The FreeForAll game mode in Ghost Battalion is free to play in the demo. It can be played with a friend or alone vs bots.

Now I don't have to recommend my game lol. RE is an FPS arena movement shooter that's been in development for about 20 years. It features parkour and intentional momentum based mechanics, which can be nice if you're bored of traditional bunny hopping found in Quake-likes, and is part of why I created it.

Wow, I had no idea John had died. Used to Skype with him and talk Quake2 engine hacking back in 2008-2010. He died far too young.

Yes, far too young indeed, he was still busy with the sequel to Alien Arena. It was very unexpected. If you play Alien Arena you are welcome to join our discord server, there are more old players from decades ago in there. We just released 7.72.3 with some updates, available for Windows users now.

I think the best options are quake live for clan arena and duel, quake champions for afps-lite, and diabotical for wipeout and sometimes duel.

Might want to give Tribes style games a shot. The sliding and gaining speed is a lot of fun. The weapons are similar to other AFPS games.
I played Tribes Ascend for a while and had a lot of fun with it. Tribes 3 Rivals is the most recent one. Midair is an indie game which has a new version in early access.

Tribes was one of the many inspirations for the movement in Red Eclipse. Not enough people appreciate this classic, good suggestion.

To me, the original Unreal Tournament (1999) and Unreal Tournament 2004 are still the best arena shooters, and even today new levels, mods, mutators, etc, are being made for them by eager fans. Plus nowdays they are free for anyone who doesn't already have them:

There is a game called galaxy grudge currently under development. It is basically a free version of UT. It is going pretty well. The devs are quite enthusiastic

Some upcoming stuff in the same vein include - blood spill, ringfall, killnetic, valhalla, arkvain, strafe buddies, and hyperfrag. A couple of these are round based like straftat but they’re all upcoming indie fps pvp games

Shootmania - In my opinion its the best arena shooter. Currently 75% off on Steam ($4.99). Small but dedicated community plays every Friday and Saturday starting at 9:00pm Eastern Time. (North American Servers).
Its a fast paced skill based shooter, with satisfying movement and unique game modes.

i might be heavily biased but: REPEATER is a very good one if you're willing to get used to unity engine style movement and the motion sickness it can cause in some people, it's very gimmicky compared to something like traditional quake, but the infinitely tiling maps are a very fresh concept for a game like this,
regardless of what game you find, have fun OP!

hello. i m a solo begener amateur dev and i just release my arena FPS just now 5 sec ago lol. you can take a look on Epic Game Store https://store.epicgames.com/p/rgb-0196fa . the game is called RGB. it s alpha version and i need beta tester so i decided to put it live . some bots are aalaible for some map. that still on going work so they are bumb and dont do all what they should do ( they love to suicide)

Xonotic. a small community, but don't judge by Jeff's servers cuz it's modded af and imo it's a trash server. other servers are fine
