Day 1 in NixOs.

Post image

I went used the minimal ISO to check it out for the first time after about 2 months of Linux with only arch as my experience

so far I just fell in love!

Nothing special yet, just set up my drive encryption, auto login and basic Sway / waybar config and a few basic things I needed.

But I just love this way of editing my system!

10/10, Thinkpad stays NixOS!

will install it on the internal soon instead of just on a 120gb external ssd.

Have a great day ! ❤️

After using arch for sometime same thoughts. Although I'd recommend having the unstable branch when it comes to Linux drivers helps on Nvidia

I mainly chose stable for now in the hope that it eliminates one error source for me to consider while beeing new. Not sure if that was logical, but I dont run nvidia cards either on my laptop nor my pc.

but thanks for the tip ! :)

I genuinely needed to change the Linux kernel version from the newest to older because the maintainers couldn't patch it fast enough on stable so I just opted onto unstable but I have a mixed system as I use both the unstable and 26.05 versions of software

I started on stable, got my setup to a point where I was happy, and then switched to unstable. I have to say I really do love unstable and the constant updates is something I actually look forward to.

Two questions/tips. Have you backed up your config with git? And have you set your maximum generations fit your bootloaders?

Both can bite you in the butt if you don’t set them up ahead of time.

i have not backed up my config in git, ngl i never used git before really but I will look into it thanks !

and I havnt set max generations on purpose yet, but I am keeping an eye on the space it takes up :) thanks for the reminder to so so after this rebuild!!!

I built a tool to help manage NixOS generations, and see the space they take up. You can run it, without installing it, straight from my repo: nix run --extra-experimental-features "nix-command flakes" github:DanielTallon/nix-packages#boot-gardener

I 've used NixOS for 5 days then I switched back to Arch

Well thats the beauty of linux, we can all chose the flavour that we like! And then spice things up even more depending on the distro.

I really enjoyed arch, but something about the way of configuring NixOS just makes me happy.

It's a great distro, it's a unique distro, it's an interesting distro, but it's not for me, it lacks good documentation and it's so hard to learn, it's good if you have specific purposes, not if you exploring and trying new things every day

a derivation a day keeps the "works on my machine" away

make sure to configure your drivers properly or else shit will be bad

Glad you like it. but honest question: what made it special above/beyond other distros?

I put it on a VM and it seems good. But I can't see a reason to switch from Debian. But then. maybe I'm missing something?

Easy rollbacks that are integrated with the system/pkg manager instead of something like timeshift, declarivate by nature so you won't forget anything you did or installed, 100% safe updated due to rollbacks, strong eco system and reproducible with 0 effort

i am experimenting around alot atm with configs and differnt packages I want.

having the capability to just roll something back by switching to a prior build feels incredible safe ( for my inevitable fuckups to matter less )

apart from that I just enjoy the declrarative approach nixos has.

and with proper time and efford I hope that ill come to a point where I can just move my specific build from system to system and just build it there and be happy after minor hardware specific tweaks!

got it. thanks.

I'm kinda dumb how do you remove what pops up at the top of the window in sway?

2

u/AuriannaKomorowski 2d ago

if I understand correctly what you mean, its the sway titlebars.

i think it had to do with the borders beeing set

Terminal and shell are different things

1

u/AuriannaKomorowski 2d ago

they are, im sorry. as said Im new to linux.

I just dont understand why bash is bad ? and why fish is better ?

2

u/Spatula0fDoom 2d ago

Well I’m not the original person that wrote about fish, I’ve just pointed out the difference.

There is no good or bad shell, each has its pros and cons. Since you are new to linux, use whatever you are using and you’ll figure out whether you are missing something or plain bash is enough for you.
