Every game I run crashes after 10 minutes
I’ve been using NixOS for a month or so and every game I’ve played ends up freezing and crashing soon after. I have installed NVIDIA drivers and every game, including steam games that use proton, runs smoothly but not for long (most of the times).
I really can’t figure out what the problem could be and it’s annoying smh.
EDIT: i have an RTX5050 nvidia GPU along with a core i9, then looking at the comments i enabled zramSwap and tried using LD_PRELOAD="" %COMMAND% on steam config, I also set boot.kernel.sysctl to 2147483642.
My assumption at this point is the game that has this problem, and that is Minecraft Dungeons 2, AND YES I'M AWARE THAT THE GAME CAME OUT 2 DAYS AGO AND STILL HAS PROBLEMS.

I got a similiar error with extreme FPS drops after 20-30 min of playing. The Solution was to add this line in Steam startup options:
LD_PRELOAD="" %COMMAND%

Do you have zram swap enabled? I had similar issue on 16GB system, some games were just oom-killed until I set up swap.

We’re taking stabs in the dark without more info. Check your journal and steam logs at the time the crashes happen and share the output here.
Check your vm.max_map_count value. I have mine set to:
boot.kernel.sysctl = { "vm.max_map_count" = 2147483642; };

check logs, i remember it's in a steam folder in user directory. you can also run steam from the terminal, run a game, and then game until it crashes. inspect logs printed in the terminal.

Had a similar problem happened twice, both times for me ended with Nvidia driver and kernel version missmatch, so change in new kernel made Nvidia driver outdated. An had to wait for Nvidia driver update. So either wait or lock kernel version for a some time. Wasn't more that a week or two last time.

Best to check logs like journalctl for Nvidia error or error in general then Google that

role back kernel ? wher ever you have boot.kernelPackages = pkgs.linuxPackages_7_0; in my case i changed it from latest to 7_0 then waited for nvidia update, but thats what i get for runing lates kernel all the time :P if you dont know witch youre on to find an olde rone just run uname -r recomend if your on like 7.2.8 go back to somting in 7.1 and if you absolutly need to have a new kernel for somting go up from there if that worked. hope its understandable quick with semi sleeping semi crying kid on the side

Sharing your config if it doesn't have sensitive info would be nice. Other than that what DE, proton version and game you're using would be nice to know. If there are any logs you can share as well.
Try launching Steam from terminal and check logs that way. What games you are trying to run any launch options that you have tried for these games.

Ignoring the weird aggression, your information is terribly out of date. The Linux/Nvidia driver landscape has changed significantly over the years, and what you’re describing is simply not true.

Please share your hardware and the relevant parts of your config files if you want help.
