Discussion Any nootropics for anxiety?
I've had anxiety all my life (trauma and other issues, no panic attacks though) in the form of worry thoughts, hypervigilance, social anxiety and OCD (OCD in remission due to CBT). I also have ADHD and I'm medicated for it with low-dose stimulants (no effect on my anxiety, just ADHD symptoms, on off days it's basically the same).
I've tried many OTC things for anxiety, l-theanine (mild help), saffron (no effect), silexan (no effect). Ashwaghanda did help but caused anhedonia after some time so i stopped that
Out of pharmaceuticals I tried a couple of SSRIs before my ADHD diagnosis and I remember having erectile dysfunction and being numbed out on them, but perhaps my anxiety was a bit better (I frankly don't remember well). However, my motivation was bad on them due to lack of ADHD treatment and the numbing effect of SSRIs so I had to stop them. Perhaps it would be more tolerable with ADHD meds.
i also tried benzos which were effective but I didn't end up using them long term due to dependence risks.
But now anxiety is becoming a persistent issue again and I'm not sure how to deal with it. i truly only feel quiet when I'm sleep deprived, when I'm well rested I always end up being anxious.
Are there any nootropics with anti anxiety effects for this kind of issue that are worth trying (such as selank) or are they pretty much useless for me? ideally I'd want something that doesn't have the flattening effects of SSRIs.
Or should I go straight to SSRIs?
