General Discussion Why are so many selling their PS4's and games so cheap?! Or why unload it at all? Why not keep for future entertainment?
Serious question - Sure, PS4 is going on 12 years old. But talk about a system that had games and games and fantastic graphics.
I look on marketplace and people selling their games for $5 or less ... PS4 with a controller for $40? I bought a PS4, controller, 10 games at a garage sale for $30 last month just for the hell of it to add to a spare bedroom.
I would think a system with such a good game catalog and graphics people would want to hold on to them - but they are basically giving them away. Maybe its cuz I'm a videogame hoarder and love to pop in old titles and replay them. I don't understand it, but its great for my home entertainment catalog and its great for my wallet picking up the old titles like Last of us, RDR 2, and tons of others for sub $5. That's nuts.

If you have a PS5, you don’t need the PS4 anymore due to backwards compatibility. My guess is folks are offloading games they no longer play at the same time.

u/Real_Mokola 15d ago
Yeah, I am planning to give my old PS4 and games to my Father in law. He is an old gamer but really doesn't have that much money on him to buy one or a gaming pc.
15
u/jeffdel1974 14d ago
I’m an old gamer myself and that is awesome of you. PS4 is an awesome system with a huge library of amazing games to play. He will have a blast and really appreciate it I’m sure.

u/--vanadium-- 15d ago
One benefit to keeping a PS4 is the extra storage. I use my PS4 for PS4 games and my PS5 for PS5 games because storage is so expensive.
I got 1TB on my PS4, and 1.6TB on my PS5. I couldn't hold anywhere close to my entire collection on my PS5, so it means I have to uninstall and reinstall less games.
Plus I got my PS4 and PS5 in separate rooms so I have options when my partner is using the TV in the living room.
3
u/HongKongHermit 15d ago
Just plug an external HDD into the PS5 to run PS4 games from, or store extra PS5 games in cold storage. I have a 2 TB plugged into my PS5 and with so much of my collection still being PS4 games I usually have over 100 games ready to play at any time.
6
u/--vanadium-- 15d ago
Of course you could add storage to your console haha. I'm aware of the existence of external drives.
The point is they cost money, and storage prices are really expensive these days.
For someone who already owns a PS4 and upgraded to a PS5, it's more cost effective to use the PS4 for extra storage rather than going out and buying an external HDD for the PS5.

u/DivineBloodline 15d ago edited 15d ago
They are a small few PS4 games that PS5 can’t play. Around 10 if I recall correctly. No major titles most would have nostalgia for. I think all of those titles are on PC as well, although some have been delisted.
4
u/Shack691 15d ago
I’m pretty sure most of those were shovelware or a gimmick title that relied on an external app.

I use my ps4 pro in my bedroom as a remote player for my ps5

I got a PS5 recently, but I'm keeping my PS4 to basically act as an extra hard drive for games rather than loading them all up on my PS5. Also a good backup system and streaming box/DVD/Blu-ray player that I could move elsewhere in my house if I wanted.
2
u/zxelvton 15d ago
Correct, it does make sense to keep a PS3 obviously.
Still have it next to my PS5.2
u/aretokas 13d ago
Yeah, I've got the PS3 and PS5 Pro. Didn't really see the need to keep the 4/4 Pro. I kind of regret selling my PS2, but then - most of the games I liked on it have been re-released or remastered so it's not all bad.

This is actually why I'm considering getting rid of my Ps4. I bought it used, had it for 4 years (and used it to essential death and very hot+loud fan noises) before I bought my Ps5 on sale a year ago, and I haven't touched my 4 since. It's just sitting around collecting dust, and I'd rather have someone who actually plays it have it rather than it just sitting around in my basement.

19
u/Aditya1311 15d ago
I just don't have the space for it. Every game is available on the PS5 for the same price and discs work too. So what's the point in keeping it for anything other than nostalgia
17
u/Charleaux330 15d ago
Its the cycle of life. When they make it to 30 theyll start having nostalgia and buy it all back for retail prices and above.
2
2
u/Twisteryx 15d ago
Most people won’t and don’t care. I cared more about trying to collect games when I was like 15. Now that I’m almost 30 I genuinely don’t care. I can’t take any of this stuff with me, I have more important things to worry about than games I played decades ago
2
u/SickOfNormal 14d ago
Some people come back to gaming… some move on and never game again.
I know tons of 40-50 year olds now that they are in good jobs making good money - they have turned back to gaming as stress relief and they think golfing sucks (which it does). Plus whether you like it or not, nostalgia usually hits in your late 30s or early 40s
25
u/Henrarzz 15d ago
PS5 is backwards compatible with vast majority of PS4 titles so why keep second console?
4
2
24
u/aflockofcrows 15d ago
Because a PS5 does everything a PS4 can, bar 3D Blurays.
8
u/Double-Lobster6107 15d ago
This is why PS1 consoles became $10 used items after the PS2 got big. Even now a PS1 console is pretty cheap as far as retro systems go, even if the games aren't.
3
u/Double-Lobster6107 15d ago
Who even has a 3D TV anymore?
3
2
u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
I sorta wish I could find one cheap. I bought a box of blurays of 100 blurays at a garage sale for $20... welp about 50 of them are 3d. And I have a 3d bluray player.
Seems like it would be fun to have one... just to have one and try out them blurays
3
u/Double-Lobster6107 15d ago
They were really trying to convince us for a while there that 3D was the future. It was a neat gimmick, but it wasn't that cool. And the glasses were annoying.
4
u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
If I could find one at a thrift store/garage sale for $20-40 --- I would grab one just for kicks. I'm not gonna go out and search for one, but if it falls into my lap, I'll give it a whirl.

Why waste space on something that you don’t need? Everything it does the PS5 does better bar some incredibly niche games that aren’t backwards compatible
5
u/geoff_the_great 15d ago
Does anybody else remember when this was happening with Ps2 stuff? How about GameCube? Smart money is buying this stuff for pennies right now.
1
u/3141592652 15d ago
I only think some games will hold their value. Most PS4 games got ports or remasters. Plus backwards compatibility as well.

u/flyinb11 flyinb11 15d ago
My PS4 Pro has sat in my closet since getting the PS5 Pro and moving my PS5 I to its place in the 2nd room. The only reason I haven't sold it is what I can get for it isn't worth the hassle. I still have all of my other consoles back to the Atari 2600 for about the same reason, though I'm close to selling them because I don't know how much longer they'll keep working.
3
u/ChangePartnershipOrg 15d ago
What PS4 games can the PS5 not play? I’m gonna get the PS5 but worried about my collection.
→ More replies (2)2
u/HongKongHermit 15d ago
Hitman Go was the only game I own that wouldn't play on PS5. Also I keep getting told that Sleeping Dogs doesn't work, but I've got multiple playthroughs without issue, I just had to make sure it was played from the internal storage and not an external HDD. (When I tried to play it from there, the hard crash and save bug hit.)
Other than that, I've had no problems. Have a huge all digital collection, and the PS5 makes most of my PS4 games run better anyway, it's basically a PS4 Pro Pro for last gen titles.
At this point owning a PS4 feels pointless. We got a better console with 99,99% backwards compatibility. Even the controller is an upgrade.
4
u/Isotomayor12 15d ago
The existence of the ps5 makes the ps4 pretty obsolete other than as a backup console or if you don't own a PS5 and want a cheap console.
As for games, they are in high supply and little demand because. Simple as that.
5
u/WhiskeyRadio 15d ago
The PS5 can play PS4 games is one reason. The PS4 is also not a system many people are collecting for right now, and the games, for the most part, are pretty cheap right now, which will probably give some people the impression that the games are just not ever going to be worth much, so better to sell it while they can. Historically, this stuff comes back around, though, and people suddenly want to revisit the games they played as kids or teenagers when they have more disposable income as adults.
I am not entirely sure the consoles themselves will be that desirable since the PS5 will play those games, but I do think the games will start to rise in value in the future, especially games that didn't get enhanced versions on PS5 or other platforms.
10
u/Double-Lobster6107 15d ago
Every Playstation has or will go through the same stage the PS4 is in right now. PS1 stuff used to be worthless, now look at it.
Build your PS4 collections now, while most of the best stuff is $20 for a new copy.

u/WhiskeyRadio 15d ago
Yup, now is definitely the time to buy PS4 games. Probably the best console to collect for right now in terms of cost.

u/Real-Experience-8396 15d ago
Crazy, I still use my PS4 all the time and I'm keeping my OG PS3 forever as well.

u/ramensospicy 15d ago

5
u/uncomfy_Aiko 15d ago
im genuinely so glad i got mine second hand, crazy part is i only own a singular physical ps5 game and i bought a whole ass disk drive for it just to get punched straight in the face and get the news we wont be getting shit anymore but hey fancy dvd player am i right!!!
4
3
u/JamaicaNoFap 15d ago
This is why i wait til consoles are at least 1 gen behind before i allow myself to buy it. It’s way more fun when the games are $5. My first time experience of Fallout 3 and Skyrim were each $5 for me 🤣 r/patientgamers is my happy place
3
u/AngryBliki 15d ago
Most PS4 games you can also play on PS5 so outside some niche cases you can just rebuy the game on PS5 if you want to play again.
You could also be in dire need for money. So getting anything for it but fast has a higher priority than getting a good price.
Other than that when you stopped playing for whatever reason, maybe not the time or interest anymore, it‘s just taking up space and collecting dust. Might as well have someone else have fun with it
3
u/negatyve 14d ago
Same reason people sell anything: they no longer use it, it's just collecting dust, and they'd rather use it to get some cash and buy new stuff. Not everyone is a collector.

5
u/aluminumnek 15d ago
I’m not complaining. More bargains for me. Who knows why… we all have reasons for what we do
6
u/StillPsychological45 15d ago
There are a hundred million, most not in active use.
If you have a PS5, you can play ps4 games so my entire library is in an external drive. The only reason I haven’t sold mine is because it is a pro but I would’ve sold a base ps4 years ago.
5
u/Stimpisaurus 15d ago
Not all of us actually go back and replay older games. I don't. Generally speaking, unless I'm in love with a game, I'll beat it and put it away. I'm not into retro gaming either.
1
5
u/Shamrock5 15d ago
As others have mentioned, the PS5 is superior in every way and has backwards compatibility, and the low price is because the resale market is absolutely saturated with them and there's low demand.
3
u/toxicity69 15d ago
My only gripe is that I think the PS4 UI/UX was better than the PS5's. I sorely miss the way the home screen looked vs. how it is now. Meaning game folders (seriously, the way games are organized now is lame), the ability to set my theme and/or background picture, less visual noise, etc. Also, my PS4 Pro with the OS loaded on an SSD was almost as fast as my PS5 Pro in terms of UI navigation. Went from often laggy to super snappy.
That said, that really isn't a great reason to choose it over a PS5 as a one-size-fits-all solution, but it still was an annoyance of mine when I upgraded to the PS5.
5
u/Shamrock5 15d ago
Absolutely. I sorely miss being able to have extremely cool customized home screen themes (my favorite was the FF7 "Tifa sitting on the tower" one), it boggles my mind why they can't do the same thing on PS5.
3
u/toxicity69 15d ago
I used one of the OG Bloodborne themes myself, specifically the one with the white background and a rear view of the player character Hunter and blood on the screen. It was so freakin' cool, man...
That FF7 Tifa one sounds like a mood, too, though lol
I think they also had some dynamic themes that were sick. So much lost opportunity with PS5.
2
u/Fragrant_Shoe2632 15d ago
I actually just flip-flopped from this mindset! I have one of those sharp blue Days of Play PS4s that I would've sold long long ago if it weren't so cool. There's always so much console overlap that the process has always been upgrading and forgetting about it. Until Sony showed their ass, I didn't really care. Once that announcement hit, everything kinda came into focus and I've taken a step back to invest money into my PS4 and PS2 slim. Games are super cheap, which is awesome. I actually just picked up the physical Stalker trilogy for my PS4, it's honestly so cool to actually own these.
2
u/Successful_Note_5871 15d ago
I hate to admit it, but unless I had an SSD to put into it, I never intend to use a PS4 ever again.
3
u/toxicity69 15d ago
Yeah, with an SSD (with the OS loaded on it), my PS4 Pro went from a laggy PoS to super snappy and responsive. It was a HUGE improvement. Notably, saving game clips went from a 20-30 second ordeal waiting for reading/writing to disk on the HDD to being just as fast as on the PS5 with the much improved read/write speeds.
2
u/Disastrous_Hope5778 15d ago
There are different reasons
1) Some people sell their ps4 to get a ps5. Not every ps4 game works on ps5 though
2) Some people just don't want their ps4 anymore.
3) Another reason may be that sony isn't making discs anymore for playstation so some people are leaving playstation for xbox or nintendo.

Out with the old, in with the new.
Down the line 10-20 years from now - Everyone will want a PS3 or PS4 again to play their old games they remember from childhood - and pay the exorbitant "retro" prices.
My god - look at whats happened to vinyl records. What used to be $1 bin sales and people giving them away .... 1st pressing and rare pressings from the 60s/70s going for hundreds of dollars now.
2
u/Any-Neat5158 15d ago
Because the crazy hasn't spread to PS4 yet.
New enough to not be "modern". Not old enough to be "retro".
Give it five years. Common cheap games will skyrocket in price, for lord knows what reason other than MEURICA.

u/AceUnknown67 15d ago
probably people that want the latest and greatest / don't care for their old console. Lots of people who "don't have time to play" or "selling because = reason".
2
u/DrPrMel 15d ago
Game collectors are an extreme minority due to most people being casuals. I have a few friends that get on every new console as soon as it is out and don’t get why I still play PS3/PS4 games or even older systems.
2
u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
It might be the type of gamer - totally agree. I think the online, multiplayer, shootem, sports players easily move on to the next gen and don't give a shit about the old ones.
I think the campaign, rpg, story intense gamers are usually the collectors and keep their systems.
Very easy to notice when people list their consoles for sale. PS4 with 6 sports games and 4 CODs ... they played the shooters and sports and now dumping that for the new shooters and sports of PS5. Totally agree with that and understand why they don't care.
Adding - This is a reason its hard to find the great/good RPGs used on the local marketplaces - these people hold on to the games they love.

This is the perfect time to grab it everything from last gen. I remember when Game-cubes were $30 used and came with an official controller. We are in those times right now...
I did a little binge of buying lately to collect the Physical PS4 games I wanted since they're cheap now.
If the PS4 Pro had a 4k movie player I'd grab another. Instead, I bought Several XBOX One S and remotes for multiple rooms. Sure it's not the BEST 4k player, but it pretty damn good for under $100 and I can play games too.
Right now I'm considering getting a used switch lite and swapping the sticks with hall effect ones.
2
u/JackBauersGhost ThaPrototype360 15d ago
Because I have boxes of old Atari, NES, sNES and every other console games boxed in my basement that I don’t display and honestly won’t ever really touch again. So I stopped keeping all of it with exceptions around the PS3 generation.
2
u/YuRiHFZ Yahriel_Heffez 14d ago
Some people dont care for old games and only play the latest and greatest releases. Personally, I dont care when the game came out, as long as its good and take advantage of this. I used to buy ps3 game bundles left and right just to increase my collection, now I have games to play whenever I want. Now I get ps4 games here and there usually at or under 10$ a game. Often Ill try and negotiate for 2/15$ at pawn shops or find cheap offerings on marketplace.
1
u/SickOfNormal 14d ago
Pretty much same here.
A lot of the "good" games or obscure games for ps4 are still about $15-20 used on ebay cuz they never come up locally.
Like I've wanted FF VII remake the last 2 years, but to no avail, I've never found it used. I broke down last week and bought it on ebay for $10 + 5 shipping. Been awhile since I paid more that $10 for a game. But I got FF7 for PS1 for my birthday when I was 11. And I've replayed it about 8 or 9 times. Thought I would give it a go at 40 for my birthday again =P but with "better graphics". Interested to see how it is!

We're entering the "I need to downsize" phase of life for the Millennials who were the main demographic (17-32 at PS4 release in 2013) for the system's first stages. They're peopel who had it, played it, and either shifted to later consoles, made the leap to PC gaming before the RAM/GPU crisis, or who stopped gaming in the last five years or so.
I started my PS4 collection because I found a PS4 Slim for $39.99 at a local thrift shop this past spring, and since then I've been expanding it from the sources you're talking about. What I've found is that a lot of the people selling aren't into replaying games, they're usually not playing anything anymore, and if they are, it's almost always a PC. So they see their PS4 units and games as unwanted junk they might be able to make a few dollars off of.
2
u/Sukaichan92 13d ago edited 13d ago
Rather them sell cheap… tired of people over pricing games.
Collecting was awesome from the 2008-2015.
I used to never have to worry about anything, never had to worry about scalpers, or missing out on a game. Now i miss out on 98% of things, and all the game dev sites i used to buy from, are instantly sold out.
Cheap is how it should be.
Gamers should’ve gatekeeped it all.
F influencers, tiktok, and the people who started it during covid. Hopping on things cause it was something to do.
2
u/Jay3000X 15d ago
This is always what it's like with the newest last gen consoles. When the PS3 was the newest, PS2 games were all dirt cheap, when PS4 came along you could buy up tons of ps3 gams for nothing. Lots of people don't think they have any value to them which is odd considering they dropped like $60+ on them most likely
2
u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
LOL - now PS3 games are mooning on ebay - especially the rarer ones or ones that didn't get their licenses renewed.
$100-200+ for PS3 games like deadpool, spiderman, wolverine and others

Space. I don’t speak for everyone obviously but space in one’s home is not always abundant. Keeping systems and catalogues of physical games and accessories from past generations is easy for those who own 3000 square foot homes in rural areas or otherwise but certainly doesn’t make sense for all.
I live in an urban centre on a postage stamp lot. Factor in kids and family belongings and things get tight real fast.

I held onto mine until just a few months ago. But I have 2 PS5s and I didn't like the PS4 sitting there not being enjoyed by someone. It was hard, because it gave me a lot of joy and I get sentimental, but sold it at a fair price with a few games, and the buyer was really happy.

u/heisenbergfan 15d ago
In my country they are so expensive. The only ones i find below $20 (used!) are the ones with exagerated copies circulating: god of war, uncharted 4, tlou remastered.
As a ps5 owner that skipped ps4 generation i have many ps4 games i still wanna play, but it has been a hard journey finding them for a reasonable price here.
Enjoy what you have !

u/imaqdodger 15d ago
Sure, PS4 is going on 12 years old.
Man does time fly. Doesn't feel like it's been out THAT long.
I personally got rid of mine several years ago as I wasn't making great use of it. I'm primarily a PC gamer and many of the PS exclusives I played through are now on PC. I didn't rebuy the games because I haven't felt the need to play through them again, but it's nice knowing the option exists if I really want to.
1
u/Double-Lobster6107 15d ago
Man does time fly. Doesn't feel like it's been out THAT long.
It's because graphics have not changed significantly in the last 12 years. When PS4 came out, 12 years ago was 2001 and you can see a clear contrast between Assassin's Creed Black Flag vs MGS2 or Ace Combat 4. The contrast between Black Flag and Black Flag Remastered is nowhere near as significant.

Where I live the economy ain't that good to keep your older consoles. You want the newer one? Then you HAVE to sell the old one. There is almost no way around it.
Regarding your "selling for cheap" argument on the games. Well, they are games for a decade old console. That is just fair with whoever is buying it. You can't expect a decade old game to sell for prices matching current games. Only Nintendo likes to exhibit such greedy behavior.
1
u/ntruder87 15d ago
Happens with every generation of consoles, up until 5-10 years ago I purposely ran the previous generation console, just because everything was so much cheaper, nes, snes, genesis, Saturn,PlayStation, ps2 , n64, GameCube, had them all when they were “obsolete”. Now they’re all collectors and and I can’t really justify buying games for any of those systems. I’m fairly confident some day ps4 stuff will join collectible.

But me hoarding them doesn't spread the joy.

I was in a retro game store recently and they have so many PS4s to unload that they can’t even give them away. May have to e-cycle. As mentioned by others, PS5 is backwards compatible so no need to keep the PS4.

Because it takes up space.

One that I CANT get rid of is PS2. Once or twice a year - sometimes for a whole month, I still pop in FF X, or MGS2 or MGS3 (and yes, I know the master collection exists), or Maximo, The Simpsons, Tony Hawk 2 or 3 ..... something about playing those on the OG that is still special. And I still prefer playing PS1 games on the PS2 vs the PS3

That's just good news for me, I'm thinking of getting PS4 Pro, I already have PS5 which can run my PS4 games except those few physical games I have, on top of that, I don't want to download and delete games constantly, so I've kept my PS4 in somewhat active use, but it seems that it is coming to the end of it's lifetime already + I have PSVR for PS4, I don't know if the PS5 is compatible with that since they made PSVR2 specifically for PS5.
I have personally kept all my consoles (excluding PS1, I have no idea what happened to that). I don't plan on to sell any of my consoles because I like to occasionally visit some of my older games.

u/Hevens-assassin 15d ago
Most gamers don't care about going back to old games, and will let them live in their memories, not on their screens.
1
u/InFa-MoUs 15d ago
It’s the digital age you aren’t really saving anything, soon the console won’t even connect to the internet and a lot of games aren’t even fully on the disk.. I feel like it made sense for older consoles and Nintendo since it feels like they actually design their consoles to be appreciated years after the lifecycle ends

On that one, it's been shown not true. Almost all PS4 games can play without patches or updates. Yes, PS4 needs to install the data from the disc, but you dont need internet to play or download further stuff for them.
I actually thought what you did ... someone a year or so ago told me "try it. Delete your games, unplug or disconnect the ps4 from the internet, reinstall the games and get back to me".
Welp, they all worked and still work as I still don't have my PS4 hooked up to the internet for the past year.

Most people aren't videogame collectors. They buy the new console and the games they want, play the games for a while (or complete them once), and sell everything to buy the next new console and/or games they want.
As a collector, I'll never sell.

u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
There are some games --- that my brain just can never stop thinking about --- so I get the urge to play them every year or 2.
Weirdly enough - they remastered FF7 - but I still pop the PS1 disc(s) into my PS2 and play it every 2 years. Same with FF9. Same with MGS2 Sons of Liberty.
Maybe I should see if I can find the remastered FF7 for cheap now that I think about it!

No idea. But I just picked up a perfectly fine PS4 Pro yesterday for 60 bucks, so I won't complain.

PS4 is in that sweet spot where most people don’t care for it anymore and have moved on to PS5, but it also hasn't gotten to the point where it is "retro" like the PS3. Also helps that PS5 is backwards compatible, so for a lot of people having two consoles isn't reasonable.
For anyone into PS4 & collecting games, right now is probably the best time to take advantage of that.

I look on marketplace and people selling their games for $5 or less
I wish that were the case in my area. Whenever I look or get alerts on Craigslist or Marketplace, prices are still $15-20 per game on average.

u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
Dont look for individual games ... just search PS4 games .... Every once in awhile you have someone list 20-30 games for $40-50. Even if you only want 5 or 6 of the games, its still helluva deal. I grabbed a 40 games for $80, pulled the 10 games I wanted --- listed the other 30 games for $100 about 2 or 3 weeks later. People offered $60-80. Sold for $80. So came out to 10 free games.

Watch some tech repair shop videos of refurbishing some of those $40 ps4s hahah 🪳🚬😶🌫️

u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
I havent had a problem with either of the ones ive bought cheap.
But, I do fix electronics - vintage receivers, turntables - i've found some serious spiderwebbage, bugs, and smoke tar on the boards from the 70s/80s that have been sitting in a garage or shed for 40 years.

u/TokyoRPGFactory 15d ago
The same type of people that call the PS4 some kind of ancient technology from an ancient civilization, and that if you still use it that makes you some kind of uncivilized rat that lives in dirt.

u/SickOfNormal 15d ago
Ah yes, the 20 year olds now that think it’s super old and lame… but have found this new media called records and cds to listen to music.
It’s hilarious - I got cousins that are like this. PS3 is super lame! Get a ps5 and with the times… but oh, btw, I got this new record by Sabrina carpenter 🤣🤣

For me it's because I recently upgraded to a PS5 and I need money for other stuff. I have mine posted for sale for $40 bucks. $10 to get a new ID and $30 for a new vape or two. I can play all my PS4 games on my 5 anyways. Plus I spent much longer than most on ps4 so I am all set touching one ever again.

u/Smart_Classroom2668 15d ago
If they are like me once I get something new I don’t go back it just collects dust only difference with me is I have a hard time letting go so it collects dust. I have every system back from Atari and don’t touch any of them.

u/Cado111 15d ago
I have used my PS4 maybe twice in the last 5 years. Both times were to transfer old saved data. There is just no reason to use my PS4 when the PS5 exists.
I use my PS3 more than my PS4. I sent regret keeping it, but I doubt it will ever get much more use out of me. Really the only use I could have for it is as a Blu ray player for the living room but the PS3 does that and has games I still want to play on it.

u/matthewnelson 15d ago
I have a PS4 Pro tbh at I no longer use due to having a PS5 Pro and it can play everything there. As much as I’d love to hoard it I should let it go so someone else can have a chance and enjoy it.
1
u/palaitotkagbakoy 15d ago
There's just some games I didn't like or felt like there is no replay value. Might as well just let someone else enjoy them and make a bit of money to buy new games.
Selling my consoles though? Never. And 40 dollars for any console is so cheap. That never happens where I'm from

I bought the PS4 pretty much just so I could play fallout 4 at launch cos my gaming PC at the time sucked. Upgraded the PC about a year later and haven't really touched the PS4 since. It's still hooked up to my TV. I know find that I'm interested again due to the high physical back catalogue of cheap games so I'll be keeping mine for a while yet.

u/EverythingEvil1022 15d ago
No clue but it doesn’t bother me any. I just grabbed a PS4 and controller a while back for $80. Doesn’t even seem like they’re worth selling.
1
u/vmpfan 14d ago
Backward compatibility makes PS4’s and X-box ones somewhat worthless on the second hand markets when there are so many second hand PS5’s and Series X’s now available. The people selling likely upgraded already and have no need for them. PS4 owners still outnumber PS5 owners but it really makes no sense to own both not to mention PS+ making the second hand gaming market for last gen also pretty worthless.

u/Kaldaien2 14d ago
They're just flexing their consumer muscle, showing off that you can resell physical games for influencer clout.

I found the current ps4 I play on, in the trash. It was a little dusty though. I opened it up cleaned and repasted. Now I play Fortnite on it.

u/drewthebrave 14d ago
PS4 released in 2013. Many people have moved on to newer consoles.
Enjoy the deals and have fun gaming!

Genuine question, why keep a ps4 if you have a ps5?
1
u/ErrorEra 14d ago
A lot of games are online coop instead of couch coop. So it can be used during holidays to play together. And also backup storage, I mostly play my ps4 backlog, so am able to keep more games already installed and ready to play.

u/jeffdel1974 14d ago
I love all the PlayStation consoles. PS3 is probably my all time favorite though. I have seen multiple PS4 consoles on Marketplace and at GameStop for really cheap. Now is the time to get one because they will go up at some point I’m sure and a nice PS4 with a great selection of games will be nice for any gamer to have for his collection.

u/THE-EMPEROR069 14d ago
I haven’t got the ps5 because my library log in my ps4 is huge and I there are a lot of games that I can play and I’m not that excited for the ps5 as I got a switch 2 and honestly with my limited time. I’m happy with the games I got in both consoles which is over 300 games that I can play.
1
u/HelpMe0prah 14d ago
My launch ps4 is sitting in a drawer with a dead hard drive, it isn’t going anywhere until internal 2.5 ssd prices come down. Then it’s going into my youngest room for him to play haha

u/MaximusAnemos 14d ago
I still have my chipped ps1. I have the entire collection of games on cd-rs. None region. Locked. And same with ps2 and ps3. Every game. I never connect to the internet and I dont care. I just bought a ps4 pro. Guess what? I jailbroke it already and have been copying all games into a few giant harddrives. I own a ps5 and plan on doing the same in the future. I also did this to my Xbox collection. And Xbox even allows roms to play on my Xbox. Prople now and days are so short sighted.

u/Burpkidz 13d ago
I sold all my older games (a couple hundred games and dozens of accessories across multiple consoles) when I moved to my new apartment (which is actually a lot bigger than the other one), because I noticed they had been gathering dust for a literal decade…
It was cool to look to the shelf full of games, but yeah, may they bring joy to other people now.

u/GreenMongo 13d ago
Was gonna do same as I always had but that Gen 1 PS4 going strong, upgraded to 1TB SSD a few years ago. If nothing else it remains a great “streaming box” in the spare BR + games.

I've had 5 PS4s, I only need at most 1. Why not sell the others? Same thing I did with 3 of my 4 PS3s and 8 of my 12 PS2s. I wish consoles this gen were not so expensive at this point in the cycle, I would e bought at least a second and maybe even a third PS5 if not for that. Which ultimately would've been down to one after the PS6 was purchased.

u/SickOfNormal 13d ago
oh, you must be like me with those numbers =P
I keep 4 PS4's and 4 Xbox ones - 2 of the 3 bedrooms has both and the downstairs and garage have both. Most to the other consoles I have only kept 2 each of. Basically every room in the house ready to modern or retro game.

u/Godeye1349 13d ago
I will forever hold on to my ps4 to play P.T., bloodborne, Persona dancing endless night collection, sound shapes, Resogun, uncharted collection, and so many other gems even though my pc offers a better experience through emulation for the few titles I've tried.

u/AxDIRTYxSANCHEZ 13d ago
Times are tough, I suppose. Then again, I still have my PS3, PS4, and will not get rid of my PS5 either. 🤷♂️

I held on to my PS4 for some years thinking I might play it another room. I did eventually sell it though since I bought only digital games for PS4 so they all moved over when I plugged the external drive into the digital PS5. I've only kept my original PS3 over the years since it plays all my PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. I never sell my games. I still play my PSP 1000, too.

u/Morbid187 12d ago
I looked into selling mine and when I saw how cheap they're going for, I decided I'll just keep it and use it as a YouTube/Twitch machine and an extra gaming device for my bedroom. My Xbox Series S already fills that role but there's no point in selling the PS4 for peanuts when it's still perfectly functional. I've considered giving it to my little sister but she's going to want to play GTA VI and that won't help her accomplish that goal. Maybe I'll loan her my Series S for a while so she can play it.

u/Grendel0075 12d ago
The sole reason I am considering getting a ps5, is because eventually new games aren't going to be compatible with ps4. Though lately im leaning more towards Steam anyway
1
u/ToothpickTequila 12d ago
If you have a PS5 then the only reason to keep a PS4 would be if you have VR games that don't work with the PS5 VR headset.

u/Leather-Doctor-8753 12d ago

u/Datruyugo 12d ago
It’s old and people have less free time to spend on video games. I’m 36 and barely ever touch my ps5. Sound my ps4 ages ago
1
u/mdnightman94 12d ago
If people got a ps5 theres no need for a ps4.
I plan on trading my ps4 in for a ps5 in the next few weeks as I wouldnt see any use for the ps4 after that
1
u/PocketNicks 12d ago
Probably PS4 emulation has gotten really good, they can backup their games and play them on PC.

I have 250+ physical discs for PS3, PS4 & PS5. PS4 discs account for 48% of that collection.

I’ve been an Xbox gamer since the 360, coming from PlayStation up to PS2, and have had my eye on a ps4. One day I was behind a college age guy at GameStop and the girl behind the counter said they would give $34 store credit. I gave him $50 cash and now I have a modern console to play at my non-gamer girlfriend’s house. Got Gran Turismo and a few games that are on Xbox but I haven’t played on sale and couldn’t be happier,

u/Consistent_Reply_557 11d ago
The PS4 is still a great gaming console o use it more than my gaming PC just because the gyro aiming and the lot of free games with the plus service.

u/LuRo332 11d ago
On the other hand why would anyone want to hold onto their jet engine if they can afford a PS5 that plays PS4 games.

Well, I’m not.
I bought mine in 2020 and basically played all the major titles.
Recently, I started playing older games I hadn't even heard of before. I finished the Mass Effect trilogy, beat BioShock 1 and 2, and I'm currently playing BioShock 3. There’s still a lot to explore.

u/SOSACONDONEZ 11d ago
I sold a bunch of old consoles mainly my ps4 first cause majority of my ps4 games can be played on ps5 cause of reverse compatibility and it was just collecting dust
1
u/DeanR_onPSN 11d ago
Backwards compatibility, a lot of people don't like a lot of crap in their house.. PlayStation 4 slow as f***
1
u/Antonymousss 11d ago
I’ve often wondered the very same OP!
Don’t worry, it’ll all change though lol. Soon we’ll be posting about how the prices have soared and how many of us are glad we held onto our collections 😊
I’m keeping even the most common games, just cuz, sometimes hell why not imma revisit gta V.

Consumismo.

When I was moving from PS4 to PS5, I sold/donated all my old consoles. Our attic was full. Stuff from all the way back to 80s. I realized I would never use it. Sure, I can drag PS1 down, get old crt tv, put The Suffering cd in, play for 15 minutes, and pack it all.
Hoarding it made no sense to me. Collecting dust for decades for a chance of being used for a couple of minutes every few years. Maybe not even that.

u/Exotic_Shirt3268 9d ago
People just get rid of stuff they don’t find useful or matter a lot to them, not all console owners are video game lovers
1
u/DiscoAsparagus 9d ago
I saw the same thing happened with the PS3. People consider it worthless. And then… It value and prices bounced back up. I think we’re gonna see the same thing here.

Some people won’t care ever, and some don’t care yet.
Happens with every generation of consoles and games.
