infamous second son being on there is crazy. zanki zero is correct though

207

u/Turd_Nerd_Bird 5d ago

Yeah, that was like the first major exclusive released for PS4 so it makes no sense lol.

18

u/Seanspeed 4d ago

Killzone Shadowfall was first, but yea. Second Son was a 'decent' game, but not much more. Was more notable simply for its amazing visuals at the time, same with Killzone. Despite XB1's horrible marketing blunders and disappointing hardware, it actually did have a better Year 1 lineup than PS4.

11

u/CICaesar 4d ago

I'd say its use of light could stil be considered extremely good today.

27

u/Pchanman 5d ago

Infamous second son is a PlayStation hits title also. Doesn't that mean it sold pretty well ?

3

u/Dachuiri 3d ago

Polygon gonna Polygon

76

u/DabVader625 5d ago

Ik it was a launch title if I remember correctly? Like this was literally the biggest game on the ps4 when it just came out if I’m right.

33

u/LaughterCo 5d ago

Yeah it was or at least felt like it was huge at the time. It was one of the first games i got with the ps4. I remember there being lots of marketing for it and it was probably one of the first games to be bundled with the system.

It could be said that it's been under talked about and underrated since then.

23

u/Nemisis_007 5d ago

It was a tech demo for the PS4 pretty much, it took advantage of every feature. Spray painting was super cool.

12

u/Hurricane_Taylor 4d ago

It was the game with the highest number of platinum trophies earned until Spider-Man came out and took the top spot…so I don’t think anyone can put it on a list of ps4 games nobody played

3

u/VikingTeddy 3d ago

As an old fart, I can tell you that you're going to see it more and more. Every gaming forum has daily posts about a "hidden gem" that was actually a huge hit in its time. It's just younger people rediscovering games.

7

u/Successful_Note_5871 4d ago

It wasn't a launch title. It came out a couple of months after. I remember because the PS4 launch was kinda rough. I'd mostly play BattleField 4 or Resogun waiting for Second Son to come out lol.

2

u/Ryan8Ross 4d ago

Lmao this is my start of uni experience. Resogun waiting room for second son. Which at the time was mindblowing for graphics/character details

2

u/DabVader625 4d ago

That sounds right actually. I kind of remember that too.

Definitely the earliest and most heavily marketed game on the ps4

3

u/Successful_Note_5871 4d ago

Haha I had to look it up to make sure before commentating, but yeah PS4 released in November and Second Son came out that following March and it was a painful ass wait. I do miss Battlefield Hardline tho.

2

u/CICaesar 4d ago

Also there weren't many AAA games for the first few months after PS4's launch to compete with, and I don't remember many others that leveraged all the new controller tech.

2

u/DabVader625 4d ago

You’re DEF right in the new controller tech. They were the only ones that made full use of the touch pad for a long time

7

u/derek420 Embro_ 4d ago

I got a PS4 on launch day and remember Second Son being the first time I thought “okay, this is next gen.” Everything else seemed like a souped up PS3 game until that point.

2

u/Oldspaghetti 4d ago

For real, was an obvious difference. Wish they kept making infamous series, but probably enough different people in the studio now that the feel wouldn't be the same.

2

u/efnPeej 2d ago

Same here. I didn’t like Delsin as a character as much as Cole, he was kind of whiny, but I loved the game. First Light was awesome too and I did like Fetch.

We need a remastered collection of this series…add it to the pile with Resistance, SOCOM, Killzone and Ratchet & Clank.

1

u/Oldspaghetti 2d ago

Yeah delsin was just serviceable enough, but overall good game. And agree, I feel like Sony knows they could make bank off rebooted or remastered versions of their classic IPs, but for someone reason they don't mess with them anymore.

I mean it's a super popular and billion dollar industry now, so there might be some hidden reasons why games don't be coming out like they used too. SOCOM would be awesome but neutered hard in its gameplay and politics in these modern times.

5

u/pichael289 5d ago

Like 70-80% are right for any particular person.

5

u/steamart360 4d ago

Just polygon making another nonsense list. They could be writing real articles but nahh.

3

u/OffendedDefender 4d ago

Within the first months of release, 1-in-6 PS4 owners had purchased Second Son. It also likely outsold its predecessors by a decent margin (we don’t have all the sales data, but the infamous games weren’t super high sellers). While it didn’t exactly set records, it really doesn’t belong on this list.

3

u/Supesmin 4d ago

Not enough people played it, clearly. Cuz Infamous got abandoned shortly after

2

u/sharkysayo 4d ago

it was still a popular game even if it didn't perform to AAA standards that are notoriously strict

10

u/Rate_Ur_Smile 5d ago

I bounced off of Zanki Zero early on because it seemed like it was just going to be horny anime shit. Years later I was like "huh I could go for some horny anime shit, let me try out Zanki Zero again" and it turned out I had been completely wrong about it. Great game. Did not satisfy my desire for horny anime shit. (There is a tiny bit of horny stuff but it's pretty tame and far between)

2

u/sharkysayo 4d ago

yeah, unfortunately it has some moments here and there (especially in the vita version which i played, the ps4 version was censored for the western release) but it really isn't a sexual game like what that censoring would have you believe. its just a couple moments and the game is otherwise pretty tame. i say unfortunately because i'm gay and would've been slopping it up if it was one of the guys

1

u/Rate_Ur_Smile 4d ago

Oh, I had no idea. I would be curious to know about the differences. There were plenty of moments where I had an imminent sense of "where there's smoke, there's fire" and then the fire wasn't there after all.

2

u/-Esper- 5d ago

That game was just so-so

1

u/dunno0019 5d ago

See, I couldn't figure out the spray paint thing. So, while I "own" a digital copy, I've never played it.

1

u/Vayshen Vayshen 4d ago

Well, it was a launch window game. PS4 was supply constrained. But it also wasn't a juggernaut series.

It's excellent on ps5 though cause it was unlocked at launch so it's been 60fps since. I still wanna get back to it, maybe try for the platinum.

59

u/I_Am_Zampano 5d ago

Drive club's weather effects still haven't been matched to date. Such a fun game

17

u/Andyman286 5d ago

I agree with the first part.

7

u/Bonyred 4d ago

I spent more time playing Driveclub than any racer before or since.

1

u/gigglefarting giggletooting 4d ago

Beautiful game

76

u/Neo_Techni 5d ago

Ty. Saved me a Click

11

u/KesMonkey 4d ago

Infamous: Second Son

Sold ~6 million copies. But sure, nobody played it.

Driveclub

Sold ~5 million copies.

20

u/AlsopK 5d ago

Bit of an odd list but I did really love Concrete Genie. I was a little disappointed by Gravity Rush 2 and felt the ending was super anticlimactic and left the experience feeling incomplete. Still a great traversal system though.

5

u/Mathuselahh 5d ago

Concrete Genie was on ps plus though so still a weird choice. Didn't it have move or VR in it?

1

u/nocauze 4d ago

Optional vr

1

u/cipherpancake 5d ago

Completely agree on Gravity Rush 2. Wish they were working on a new one. But that’s a really low chance of that happening, sadly

1

u/fireking08 3d ago

Hold on. You know there's an act 4 in that game, right? Cause I thought the ending was pretty final

1

u/AlsopK 3d ago

Wow, just checked my trophies and you might be right. I swear the credits rolled though so confused how I messed that up.

1

u/fireking08 3d ago

The credits did roll; it was a fakeout. There should be a whole bunch of Info markers on your map once you finish Chapter 20, talking to all of them unlocks the marker for Chapter 21

4

u/gamers542 5d ago

Infamous and Driveclub are the only ones I heard of. I didn't even know Gravity Rush had a sequel.

2

u/Hevens-assassin 3d ago

Gravity Rush for a sequel that was bigger in every single way. Lol if you liked the original, you'll enjoy the second, I'd imagine.

5

u/Zalocore 5d ago

None of those are near perfect

5

u/Sparrowsabre7 5d ago

Bound is not that good. It is visually impressive but mechanically dull.

6

u/Zekohl 5d ago

It's a game for the eyes, there were quite a lot of those back then, very pretty, little substance.

3

u/Sparrowsabre7 5d ago

Yeah, but I would say Abzu, while arguably in the same boat. Was much more satisfying to explore and play. Bound was both mechanically shallow and very linear. And then it tried to be all worthy by being about abusive/unsupportive parents or something? With the weird repressed memory segments. Or am I thinking of a different game?

2

u/Vinca1is 5d ago

I actually love Exist Archive lol

2

u/Maso_TGN 5d ago

The battle system is decent, but the lack of dungeon variety, the extreme grinding, characters lacking of any interesting personality and the absence of an interesting plot makes it an skippable title for me. Perhaps my expectations were too high after Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2...

1

u/Vinca1is 5d ago

Nah, it's underrated but it's not amazing

2

u/LanceShiro 5d ago

I beat Second Son 3 times, so I guess that's that!

2

u/IronMonkeyBanana 5d ago

Funny, just bought infamous: Second Son PS4 disc secondhand today.

1

u/agentofmidgard 3d ago

I sold it to some guy and when he came to pick it up I noticed he didn't know anything about videogames and for some reason I was so happy that that was gonna be one of his first games

6

u/jedimindcrits 5d ago

Actually disliked gravity rush 2, was just more of the same

9

u/sameyeamknot 5d ago

I loved the first Gravity Rush but just couldn’t get into the second one and quit part way through.

6

u/pakkit 5d ago

Agreed, Gravity Rush 2 is so incredibly beautiful but it feels like it barely moved the needle forward as far as gameplay and the pacing is much slower than the original. It just became tedious and I had more fun falling than engaging with the majority of its missions.

1

u/austin_slater 5d ago

Gravity Rush 2 has a lot more going on. The story is like bonkers off the rails, but I found it…okay. But the side missions in GR2 I thought were terrible. Most of them were just stupid wastes of time.

1

u/WeebWoobler 4d ago

Yeah and it was awesome

1

u/budbud70 4d ago

2 is a better game in basically every way.

1

u/melody-calling 5d ago

I loved gravity rush 1 so was really looking forward to number 2 but they didn’t release it on the vita, the console the original came out on. Like what the hell was that decision

2

u/reallynotnick 4d ago

It came out in 2017 and Sony was well over the Vita by 2015.

2

u/NightCityAssassin 4d ago

That Infamous was boring.

2

u/3alternatetanretla3 4d ago

I’m from Seattle and was so excited for this game. I tried to play it twice and couldn’t finish it. Way too boring

1

u/OliveOcelot 5d ago

I've played almost every short game on Ps extra and bound is by far one of the worst games I've ever played.

1

u/slyredux 5d ago

I was super hyped after concrete genies trailer, that game was such a letdown

1

u/Rasimov 5d ago

Considering Summon Night 6 was translated and published by Gaijinworks in the west, it's no big surprise. Probably a low print run, and it was delisted a while ago. I'm not even sure if Gaijinworks is still in business. Their website is up with an updated copyright of 2026, but looks like they haven't made any updates in years.

1

u/Flamefaceee 5d ago

Gravity Rush Remaster is way better than 2, the latter is kinda boring imo

1

u/Bonyred 4d ago

Driveclub and Infamous Second Son both achieved 5 million lifetime sales and both were highlights of my time on PS4.

1

u/HRRB 4d ago

Didn't everyone play Driveclub because it was free?

1

u/Puripuri_Purizona 4d ago

Only one I've played is Driveclub.

1

u/19osemi 4d ago

Infamous second son was a good game but I feel like it kinda released to early in the consoles life

1

u/gravelordservant4u 1d ago

Driveclub shot itself in the foot by not having actual multiplayer. Game could have been perfect but without that, it was trash.

0

u/jacquesrabbit 5d ago

I stopped playing Gravity Rush 2 because the PC was told not to go, and I tried to leave, but the game won't let me. like you really see a dangerous thing happening, you should nope out of it, but they won't because of plot

110

u/LaughterCo 5d ago edited 5d ago

Infamous Second Son was or at least felt like it was huge at the time. It was one of the first games i got with the ps4. I remember there being lots of marketing for it and it was probably one of the first games to be bundled with the system.

It could be said that it's been under talked about and underrated since then. Given that it was overshadowed by the later heavy hitters for the system.

73

u/SawkyScribe 5d ago

InFamous Second Son really feels like the last of an era. All of the reckless abandon and chaos of a PS3 title with all of the graphical polish and flare of a PS4 game.

There was something so meditative about the traversal. The way you'd dip up and down like a sine wave dashing across roof tops felt really good

3

u/syamborghini 2d ago

You should check out control resonant

15

u/drellmill 5d ago

I love that game it was my first PlayStation platinum

10

u/hypespud 4d ago

I thought it was amazing too, idk why people are hating on it in here, it's extremely polished and well done, and an amazing open world for PS4 pre-Spider-Man and stuff

I've only played a few on here, but I wouldn't call them near-perfect, but I would call them all underrated and deserving of more praise for sure

Gravity Rush 2 - this is a no-brainer one, absolutely gorgeous universe, GR1 remastered is also on PS4, and GR2 is absolutely just wonderful

Infamous Second Son - this game gets weirdly criticized I guess for changing the MC, but it's super, super underrated imo, I think it was the best playing Infamous game and I loved the beautiful world, super underrated, the spinoff title First Light is awesome too

DriveClub - this is the weakest one here, but it's still overlooked for sure, and it's great looking and fun, wish it got a PS4 Pro patch

2

u/LaughterCo 4d ago

I gotta get around to playing First Light sometime, looks really cool.

1

u/Seanspeed 4d ago

Driveclub is the best game of the bunch for me here. Was especially great since PGR never returned, and this slotted in right where PGR sat, in terms of semi-realistic physics, amazing presentation values, and thrilling racing.

7

u/Theguest217 5d ago

I didn't enjoy it much. It's one of those open world games plastered with repetitive activities, except if I remember correctly you had to actually do most of them to progress the story. There were some neat ideas in there and some of the special abilities you unlocked were cool but it felt like it wasted my time a lot.

It was like all the bad repetitive parts of Spiderman without the amazing story driven missions.

3

u/LaughterCo 4d ago

I remember also being underwhelmed by it at the time. I still enjoyed it but I found the main villain to be lacking.

48

u/foxyt0cin 5d ago

That neon-powered sprinting sound from Infamous Second Son lives in my soul

ffzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwweeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww

32

u/HowlingStrike 5d ago

I loved driveclub because i could do a race, then that time was there for a week for my mates to beat. Felt like a cool way to play multiplayer without playing multiplayer

88

u/ashmaht HwTi3 5d ago

Infamous Second Son is one of my favorite games of the PS4 generation. I have yet to experience better traversal mechanics in any other game. Spider-Man 2 came close, but Infamous Second Son still clears easy.

As for the rest of the list, I can't say I really enjoyed my time with Erica (there was barely any gameplay) or Concrete Genie (beautiful art style, but really dull gameplay) nearly as much.

11

u/majestic7 5d ago

Erica is a narrative game, the story is the game.  You're of course free to not like it, but describing it as having barely any gameplay comes down to just not liking the genre imo, which once again is fine but it's also somewhat missing the point.  But it's definitely closer to an interactive movie than to a game in many ways.

1

u/pezki 4d ago

I loved Second Son but the rail grinding in Infamous 2 was awesome. My favorite in the series.

19

u/moogle322000 5d ago

I really loved concrete genie. One of the few games I played from start to finish without switching between others.

2

u/Jonaskin83 4d ago

Different genre (2D Platformer) - but The Artful Escape hit all of those same spots for me as Concrete Genie did. I’d recommend it highly if you haven’t checked it out.

1

u/moogle322000 4d ago

Never heard of it. I'll have to look it up.

13

u/Ilzaki 5d ago

I've played two of those. Gravity Rush 2 and Summon Night 6. And I wish they got more attention.

27

u/ImOctavius 5d ago

They are fun games, but the only one I'd say is near-perfect is Gravity Rush 2.

8

u/Fuckyounadia 5d ago

Dang, I tried it and traversal was so much fun. But the combat made me feel kinda brain dead. Plus I ran into a bug that wouldn’t let me finish a mission I spent so long on that I thought “fuck it I’m done”

1

u/Rate_Ur_Smile 4d ago

IMHO the problem is that your main attack is to fly directly at the center of the screen, which means you can't really tell what your target is actually doing. For me, combat was like "mash mash mash" and then either I won or I'm dead, and if I'm dead, I didn't really l learn anything about what to do differently next time.

4

u/SawkyScribe 5d ago

I replayed the game last week and it's an incredible game but flawed in so many ways. The camera is the worst I've seen in a modern game, it seriously feels like something out of a licensed PS2 game.

The combat and traversal while fun and unique lack a lot of sauce or ways to be cool and expressive.

The real killer for me was the mission design. The amount of main and side missions that are insta-fail stealth segments baffled me. You are an unwieldy superhero who's main form of locomotion is falling through the air and yet so many times you are asked to carefully duck around corners to avoid detection

9

u/Maso_TGN 5d ago edited 5d ago

Calling Exist Archive "near-perfect" is a really big stretch. I hoped in looking towards a Valkyrie Profile successor, but game is boring af 👎

3

u/cleanjerms 5d ago

For real. I wanted to love it, but it's so boring.

7

u/Rider-VPG 4d ago

Concrete Genie was such a snooze fest. Played it when it was given out on PS+ and I still felt scammed.

4

u/juicyman69 5d ago

Erica shoutout. Deep cut.

2

u/ATXDefenseAttorney Sonic Sleuth 5d ago

Yeah, but calling it "near perfect" in the title is a massive overstatement. It was perfectly fine if you're in the mood for that kind of game, and that's okay.

4

u/piat17 5d ago

The Tomorrow Children was really an unique game for many reasons, nothing has come close to it in terms of both gameplay and atmosphere (even games that have comparable systems of base building or resource gathering). I played the original free to play version and was super happy when Phoenix Edition came out; however, I ended up not playing much for two reasons: (1) playing single player is not very good due to certain features that target online multiplayer still being present, the most blatant one being that time passes even for single player saves so if you don't play for a while you come back to see your progression reset back (due to things like attacks on your town, lack of resources such as food which gets consumed regularly, and other things that the game simulates based on the time elapsed), and (2) the game requires PS Plus to play online unlike the original, and it's been years since I last purchased a subscription.

My biggest hope was for the game to come to PC, such that online multiplayer would've become possible without paying for a subscription, or (secondly) just give us an option to play single player saves that can be frozen until loading them, but unfortunately that has not happened and the devs have moved on to other projects :(

4

u/Dunge 5d ago

A bit of a wrong list since some of these were available on PS+ and definitely had a lot of people playing them.

4

u/fakeguitarist4life 4d ago

Drive club was very fun. Sad it failed

3

u/Johnnybats330 5d ago

This is not a 10/10 but ai have never heard anyone talk about Echo. It is such an underrated game.

3

u/DestrixGunnar 5d ago

13 Sentinels is so overlooked, a list about games nobody played didn't even bother including it 🫠

1

u/Jonaskin83 4d ago

I was almost certain this would have been on the list.

3

u/alex_dlc Alex_dlc 5d ago

I still play Driveclub!

3

u/csvega84 4d ago

Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen

Its such a hidden gem I cant believe no one I know has played it.

3

u/Unfair_Pangolin_8599 4d ago

Wipeout Omega Collection. Enough said.

3

u/raymate 2d ago

This.

I purchased all PlayStations (consoles and handhelds) just for this franchise

So pleased this was a launch title in the PS1. Launch console purchased with wipEout, Ridge Racer and Tekken.

2

u/Unfair_Pangolin_8599 2d ago

I'm looking forward to Galactic Racer I'm hoping it will be our new Wipeout.

3

u/raymate 2d ago

How did I not know about this. Looking into that. Thanks for the tip.

2

u/EvilAbdy 5d ago

Drive club had a banger of a soundtrack

2

u/Anemonous1 5d ago

So im nobody…

2

u/bradleywardamn 5d ago

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

I was hoping to see it. I would recommend it to anyone.

2

u/SSIchigo86 3d ago

Zank Zero 👌 what an awesome game that was.

2

u/TheHooDooer ReDRuM1245 3d ago

Infamous Second Son

Infamous First Light. One of my favourite performances by Laura Bailey.

2

u/checkdanews 3d ago

Why are the die-hard Sony fans so friggin miserable on this sub? I hope its just bots designed to agitate and cause conflict because some of y'all are irrationally angry and off-putting.

Edit: Didnt realize I was sorting comments by new, all the top comments are quality. I guess its just the newer comments that are negative.

1

u/kubroweggs 2d ago

This sub was always weird, even in the ps4 prime most comments were negative. I remember some specific ones like people in this sub mad at threads that praised the first party games, saying they were promoted or complaining that sony was not making  online games like xbox. Then Sony went that route in the ps5 and it ended horribly...

2

u/todreamofspace 2d ago

I have Gravity Rush 2 & Erica on an extensive backlog list. How many hours to complete either game?

2

u/kubroweggs 2d ago

I Didn't knew that the same team that made summon night 6 also made digimon time stranger, interesting.

2

u/Izikiel23 Izikiel23 5d ago

Only played infamous and gravity rush, never heard of the others

-2

u/Fuckyounadia 5d ago

What was the point of this comment?

3

u/Izikiel23 Izikiel23 5d ago

Point being, how great are the others if only 2 are known?

1

u/SawkyScribe 5d ago

Anecdotal evidence is not always good evidence. In a time when games really have to fight to be noticed and gems slip through the cracks all the time, saying "I never heard of it so it can't be that good" feels a little ignorant.

2

u/Izikiel23 Izikiel23 5d ago

Such is life unfortunately. I loved Lies of P recently, and getting it through PS+ was a god send, but the sad reality today is in my case the constraint isn't money to play games, it's time.

I realized I don't play a lot of games per year, but the ones I play I spent at least 50h each (Lies of P 77h with the expansion, which I got after beating the base game, totally worth it).

So yes, discoverability is a problem, unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to spend on games to try them and see if they are worth my money. I still have death stranding 2 (I loved the first one) in the backlog, same with metaphor re fantazio, spider man 2, Alan Wake 1&2, and I want to buy control resonant (I loved the previous installment).

I lack time.

1

u/BowlProper9343 5d ago

Gravity Rush 2 still slaps years later.

1

u/SirWalrusVII xShareem 5d ago

I remember trying to get into the Tomorrow Children when I was in Highschool, It was such a weird experience I did not understand what to do

1

u/Aesthete18 5d ago

I feel like I've played some great games no one speaks about at least.

1

u/ChaosRaiden 5d ago

Zanki Zero’s main premise is weird as hell

1

u/Bahlegdeh 5d ago

None of the games there are near perfect and many of them had huge audiences (Concrete Genie and Infamous are within the range of top 1% of played games). Bound for example was interesting, sure, but it was buggy and janky.

1

u/absolutehopebirthday 5d ago

I played Zanki Zero and I don’t know if I would recommend it; it’s very grindy and the darkness of the story just comes across as silly after a while.

1

u/Kazaloogamergal 5d ago

I own a physical copy of Concrete Genie but I've only played a little bit of it. I have a huge backlog.

1

u/R4GDR0P 5d ago

Currently playing Infamous Second Son and I'm having a blast!

1

u/W4ND4 5d ago

Ah Polygon and their takes on what is a “near perfect game” they couldn’t have been more far from the truth. Again it is polygon not a gaming platform but an access media will say anything and everything to maintain that access

1

u/silverhandguild 4d ago

Gravity Rush 2 is one of my favorite games. I played it. This article is a liar.

1

u/_Polymath99_ 4d ago

Infamous: Second Son is such a weird shout for this list. It's among the best-selling games on PS4 and was the first big exclusive that millions of people bought the console for. It's also mid as fuck, so "near-perfect" is a maaassive reach lmao

1

u/FastenedCarrot 4d ago

You reminded me that I really want to play Gravity Rush

1

u/cold-vein 4d ago

All flawed games that had something that made them fun or playable regardless. So not near perfect, they were ignored for good reason.

1

u/ThamusWitwill 4d ago

Bound was visually incredible but as a game, it was a sub par platformer with a dance button.

1

u/gladwinorino 4d ago

Second son was not a game that nobody played was it?? I played it through at least 6 times. Probably more.

1

u/KingreX32 KingreX32 4d ago

Only one of those i played was Drive Club

1

u/PsychologicalHand811 2d ago

Concrete genie is amazing.

1

u/CokBlockinWinger 2d ago

I own half of these

1

u/adamantitian 14h ago

Zanki zero was a wild experience
