I have been waiting for ai to get to a point where it can build out characters for me and with ChatGPT Astra it’s finally at a point where I can load a single image and have it build out my full character including sprite sets.

ChatGPT Astra with ChatGPT images for character sprite image generation.

Background created in photoshop / ChatGPT and imported with fighter factory.

Snapped my sd card

Somebody made me a RetroPie mega drive and after an absolute ball ache trying to get my 8bitdo m30 reconnected, I've somehow managed to snap my sd card in half while putting the cover back on and now it obviously doesn't work. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a new card loaded with games please? It's a raspberry pi 3 model B+ and i have absolutely no idea where to start. Thanks

lr-genesis-plus-gx suddenly very slow & laggy on Pi 4.

I've had this Pi set up for years and use it pretty regularly, but it's been months since I last played a Genesis game. I've always used lr-genesis-plus-gx for Genesis, and never had a problem with it until now.

I never had any performance issues before, but I just fired up Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition, and the game slows to a crawl as soon as any Hadoukens are thrown. So then I fire up Sonic, and it slows to a crawl whenever any enemies are on screen.

I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling lr-genesis-plus-gx but the problem remains. (lr-picodrive still runs fine)

  • What settings can I try changing to see if it helps the speed issue?
  • How can I get the FPS to show on-screen?
    • Google says it's Settings > Video > Display Frame Rate, but I don't see that option listed under Video.

EDIT: I've tried Removing the emulator, reinstalling from source, returning settings to the default, double-checking to make sure I hadn't accidentally turned out shaders... still no luck.

But I've got a workaround for the time being. A while back, I installed a a fork called lr-genesis-plus-gx-EX that supports larger ROM sizes for games like Paprium. It plays everything perfectly, just like lr-genesis-plus-gx used to!

I'd still like to figure out wtf happened to the original emulator, but for now, if I want to use lr-genesis-plus-gx, I'll use the expanded version I guess.

EDIT2: Actually, while lr-genesis-plus-gx-EX does run a lot better, it's still not perfect. Picodrive runs at a consistent 60FPS, lr-genesis-plus-gx-EX bounces around the mid-50s, and lr-genesis-plus-gx frequently drops to around 30FPS.

I guess I'll stick to Picodrive for now...

PortMaster on Debian-based RetroPie: experimental community integration

Hi r/RetroPie,

I’ve been working on a community integration to run PortMaster’s GUI launcher from RetroPie on Debian-based systems. The installer adapts the setup to RetroPie’s ports folder and adds a launcher in EmulationStation.

Repository: https://github.com/Renetrox/PortMaster-RetroPie-Debian

This is experimental. The PortMaster interface launches, but controller handling and compatibility with individual ports still need testing. A port that works on a handheld CFW may not work on every RetroPie device, so please read the README and treat each hardware/software combination separately.

This is an independent project, not an official RetroPie or PortMaster release. I’m sharing it for feedback and testing; RetroPie support for non-standard Debian setups remains at your own risk.

Problem Need help with my arcade machine.

I have an arcade machine that I’ve had for quite a few years. It’s a mock-up original Mortal Kombat design, (has four controllers though) and was running quite nicely for many years.

It’s powered by a pi3b+ and had a custom image that just WORKED.

I had to change the screen recently as the old one had really significant burn in, and after it was installed, I rewired everytbing, cleaned it all up, powered it up and it booted…… once…

Turns out the card has a crack in it, and seems to be unrecoverable.

I do not have a backup for it.

It was made by MikozzZ as far as I know and I would love to find that old IMG again.

Posting this in the hopes that SOMEONE knows the setup I am talking about.

It would load a selection of videos randomly at start up instead of the standard retropi boot up.
It would cycle them randomly.
Rick and morty in 8 bit.
Stranger things starting theme with a little video.
There was a video of an old news article talking about video games taking over the world.
There was a Futurama one playing Tom Sawyer…. You get the idea. It was a real experience using that setup and I HOPE that someone knows the one I am talking about and can help me out a bit to locate it.

The menu was a showcase theme, and it was all arcade.
SNK, Capcom, Konami, etc.

The biggest thing for me is that it’s going to be hard to configure this to how seamlessly it was before.

Arcade punks is a no go, I don’t have a Usenet account and all relevant links are either dead or the torrents aren’t being hosted.

Anyone able to help me identify it and locate it?

It was on a 64 gb card, but I believe the file was 31gb

Best Way to Keep Player Order for 4x DragonRise Encoders for Arcade Cab

Hey All!

I just had a 4-player control deck made for my arcade cab and I’ll be converting from a standard 2-player setup.

I’m running a stock RetroPie build (Pi4) and I’ve never had issues with player assignment for 2-players (I.e left joystick and buttons are player 1 and right joystick and buttons are player 2).

Now that I’ll be adding on two more encoders, I need to ensure that player assignment will always go:
3-1-2-4.

Just to add that I’ve got a few other USB peripherals so all 4 usb ports are used up on the pi.

I’ve read a few mixed things on this - but what is the preferred/recommended approach to ensure player ordering remains constant across emulators/systems?

Thanks for any insight and recommendations!!!

Having trouble deciding which specs to buy

I'm looking to build a retro handheld that runs RetroPie, mainly to play GBA and DS Pokemon games (so nothing demanding, at least for now).

I can't decide whether to buy a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, and whether to get 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM. I've read CPU is the main bottleneck. So I lean towards the Raspberry Pi 5. I've read the DS itself only had 16 MB of RAM so 4 GB seems excessive, but I also know the OS and emulators will add some overhead (especially if running two instances to trade) and that modern systems can get very bloated for little apparent reason. So I lean towards 4 GB. But the Raspberry Pi 5 with 4 GB of RAM is prohibitively expensive these days.

Will the Raspberry Pi 5 with 2 GB of RAM suffice? I just really don't want to run into any performance issues, and I'd like to future-proof my system for other consoles at least a bit (but what consoles could I emulate with 2 GB?). Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. How easy is it to get RetroPie running on a Pi 5 from a Mac?

PS4 controller pairs but won’t reconnect on reboot

This seems to be pretty common. I have a ps4 controller that is a little older and I was able to figure out pairing and it works flawlessly. I recently bought another ps4 controller and while it will pair initially, it won’t pair again on a subsequent use. If I turn on the pi 4 and then press the home button, it never syncs. I can complete the pairing process again but it requires removing the controller from paired devices.

Any ideas of why one works and the other doesn’t?

Question Joystick not working

Hii! I'm new here I have the retro pi working and everything but I bought a sanwa joystick and I can't get it to work.. all the wires I bought don't seem to actually be compatible so I'm soldering with the wires that came with the joystick but the retropie still doesn't register the up I'm trying to test in this case. Not sure if it's my soldering? It's been a minute since I've soldered, I did it on the other side of the USB joystick controller I assumed that was the right place?

Thank you!

VirtualGlove—camera-based Power Glove controls for RetroPie

So I’ve been building VirtualGlove, an open-source project that uses a camera and hand tracking to recreate the experience of Power Glove without requiring the original glove or ultrasonic sensor bars.

The system uses:

  • An Arduino UNO Q as the VirtualGlove Controller
  • A USB camera for local hand and gesture recognition
  • A Raspberry Pi running RetroPie - I plan on getting Batocera going for the 0.5.0 release
  • A custom Nestopia core for native Super Glove Ball control
  • FCEUmm support for joystick-style Power Glove games

For Super Glove Ball, your hand position controls the robo-glove continuously across the screen. Other games can use eight-direction movement and recognized gestures mapped to NES controls.

The current release candidate includes guided installation, camera recovery, pairing between the Controller and RetroPie, player calibration, movement-reach controls, a camera-settings wizard, documentation, and an optional engineering toolkit for anyone who wants to tinker.

It’s now genuinely playable—I’ve completed a full game of Super Glove Ball with it—but it’s still a release candidate, and different rooms, cameras, players, and RetroPie setups will help reveal what needs polishing, and I’m already expecting bugs.  I’d love your feedback —especially from anyone who remembers trying to make the original Power Glove behave!

Has anyone had any luck getting "Project Dream" to work in RetroPie?

You might've heard the news about the RareWare SNES prototype that appeared online recently. If not, here's an article & gameplay video:

I was curious to see how its pre-rendered graphics look on a CRT, so I copied it to my Pi 4 which uses composite out to a CRT. However, I'm not having any luck getting it to work.

  • lr-bsnes loads up a silent black screen.
  • lr-snes9x, black screen.
  • lr-snes9x2005, black screen
  • lr-snes9x2010 kicks me back to the EmulationStation menu.

Has anyone had any luck?

Struggling to find Mirror shader for retropie cocktail mame.

I got started on this project a while ago, upgrading my Arcade1Up cocktail machine with a raspberri pi, a sound amplifier, and new buttons/joysticks.

It works like a dream, though the sound is a little quiet, and now im re-visiting it to clean it up a bit.

First thing I need to figure out where to get a Mirror Shader, as I have been struggling to find one. If there were a program that could auto-apply it to pre-determined multi-player arcades and video games, that'd be great, but I doubt that exists.

After that, I read theres a program that'll remove titles that scrapers couldnt find box art for, but i haven't been able to find that either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Problem Composite RPi4 setup fails to launch Arcade

This is a pretty niche problem, but I'm hoping someone can offer me some guidance. So for context, I followed this guide to setup my Raspberry Pi4 to display 240p games sharply on my composite CRT: https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1qwscnj/i_have_cooked_up_what_i_think_is_probably_the/

The problem is, when launching FBNeo games specifically, there seems to be some sort of conflict with the resolution switching script. I get to the launch screen for Retroarch where I can press "A" to change some core options, but when the core launches an arcade game, it boots me right back to my Retropie menu.

I know the issue isn't my emulator or ROM set, I made sure they were compatible and the games launch when I diagnosed by setting the video setting to sdl2 which disabled the switch, but at 480i these games look terrible with the interlacing and I can't apply shaders.

I know arcade emulation is super complex and these game resolutions may be conflicting because they aren't a clean 240p scale. Does anyone have a setup of their own that produces a clean and working arcade game image on their composite crt?

Question RetroPie in 2026: fresh install or old image?

I know this has probably been discussed before, but I’m curious what people would do in 2026.

I’ve always been a Raspberry Pi fan and I’m thinking about building a new little “game station” with a Pi + RetroPie.

I’m basically deciding between two approaches:

  • start completely fresh with a current Raspberry Pi OS install and set up RetroPie manually
  • take one of the older RetroPie images and try to update/modernize it

I know that with older setups there may also be ROM set compatibility, BIOS files, emulator versions, etc. to sort out, but that’s another rabbit hole.

What I’d really like is a clean and minimal system, without unnecessary stuff running in the background, and ideally something that makes better use of the Pi hardware than some of the older ready-made images.

I don’t really mind spending time setting it up from scratch if there's actually some benefit in terms of performance, stability, boot time, drivers, newer libraries, etc.

So, if you were building a Raspberry Pi RetroPie machine from zero today, what would you do?

Fresh Raspberry Pi OS + RetroPie-Setup?

Or would you still start from an older known-good RetroPie image and update it carefully?

Also curious if anyone here has already gone down this route and noticed any real improvement compared to the old images.

Searching for FreePlayTech kit

I’ve been getting back into my old GBA SP with Pokémon FireRed and been looking at getting a GB Operator, sheikh then reminded me. I saw the FreePlayTech kits years ago and I’ve been tinkering with raspberry pis for a few years now.

Thought, hey that’d be nice to get all the old games on a GBA now. Just retro pie it, grab the ROMs from my old Pokémon’s, Zelda’s, etc and we’re good to go. Looked up FreePlayTech and all the kits seem to be sold out.

Wondering if there’s any other storefronts or locations I might be able to find one or if I’m gonna be dead in the water? I’ve messaged FreePlay, checked ebay, RetroModding, and don’t seem to have any luck.

Any recommendations would be immensely appreciated!
