Over the past few months we've gotten a lot of new players asking where they should start with the trilogy. With this stickied thread, I'm hoping to answer any questions someone may have about getting into the series.
Note: This thread is a strictly no-spoiler zone.
The MOTHER series is a group of 3 turn-based cult classic JRPGs created by Shigesato Itoi, who singlehandedly wrote every line of dialogue in the series, aside from a small area in EarthBound.
The series is known for being quirky, charming, and invoking a sense of nostalgia even to those who have not played a MOTHER game before. Each line of dialogue is expertly crafted, with a great story to go along with it.
The series IS a trilogy, however each game can stand on it's own without the context of the last.
The 3 games are as followed:
MOTHER (EarthBound: Beginnings) (1989)
MOTHER 2 (EarthBound) (1994)
MOTHER 3 (???) (Not released outside of Japan) (2006)
The game order is as released, with MOTHER being the first on the timeline, and MOTHER 3 being the last.
This is a point of contention within the MOTHER community.
While most recommend to play EarthBound / MOTHER 2 first, some will say that if you can handle the way an older RPG plays, you should start with MOTHER 1 / EarthBound: Beginnings.
The community mostly unanimously agrees that you should play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.
In the end, it's up to you. MOTHER 1 is one of the most impressive, best playing and sounding RPGs on the NES, but it could potentially turn you away from the series if you aren't accustomed to or can't handle a bit of older-rpg "clunk". I do HIGHLY recommend however that you at least play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.
I'm glad you asked! (Hopefully you did.)
Almost immediately after the release of MOTHER 3, once it became apparent Nintendo had no intention of localizing MOTHER 3, a group of very passionate fans got together to make their own localization of the game.
2 years later in late 2008, version 1.0 was released to great acclaim. This fan translation is now known to many as the best fan translation of all time. On top of just translating the game, they went out of their way to make sure certain dialogue and enemy names worked in English as they do in Japanese. They even added a hard mode option!
...That's pretty much it, I think. If any regular here on the sub wants to chime in and request something to be added, tell me! On top of that, I'd like to know what some of you think the best order to play the games in are in the comments. It'll be an interesting resource for any new players! And remember, no spoilers.

Earthbound was an amazing game. It had a pretty good story, but obviously it was nothing mind-blowing, imo. It was your typical saving the world from an alien invasion or cosmic threat story, with it revolving around kids being the heroes. there were some twists and turns throughout the game, but the game is lighthearted and silly at it’s core. It doesn’t include any serious themes that it tries to show, imo. how is Mother 3 on the other hand? Do you think the story is a highlight of the game? I’ve heard that the story is pretty dark and has serious themes. That makes me intrigued, in case it could be on a similar level to something like Undertale.

When I first played both games I used a walkthrough so I didn’t skip any. But in Earthbound, a lot of the Your Sanctuary locations are required right away. Like you don’t have to fight the Mondo Mole right after saving Paula or the Trillionage Sprout after fighting Master Belch. And in Mother 1 theoretically you could get to Mt Itoi with only 1 melody. So I’m wondering if you guys ever skipped Melodies and then had to go back for them late in the game.

Having recently played through mother 1 again I realized that there’s not that many boss fights. You have the Starman Jr, The Robots, The Dragon, Giegue, and that’s basically it. I guess you could consider the doll fight kind of a boss fight, but that’s barely a fight. There’s the Fish but it’s optional. And there’s the dog blocking Duncan’s factory but that’s basically just a stray dog that you fight at the start of the game. So in terms of major boss fights there’s really only 6 in the whole game. You would think that considering some of the dungeons in this game are so long that there’d be a fight at the end of them. Like Duncan’s Factory or Rosemary Manor, especially since that’s where one of the melodies is.

Howdy! I have developed a quality-of-life mod for EarthBound called EarthBound Reverb, and I hope to release it next week. Before then I'd love a few people to play it and tell me what breaks. I feel like I have gone a bit bug blind, so fresh eyes would be very helpful.
It has fast-forward with the music at normal speed, 16:9 widescreen, King as a short term party member, stacking Goods, and a bunch of small things that you can turn off in the settings, that might make the experience a bit smoother. It's built into an emulator core, so you'd need OpenEmu (Mac) or RetroArch (Mac, Windows, Linux, Steam Deck), plus your own EarthBound ROM.
If you're up for it, send me a message with which one you'd use, or just comment below and I will reach out. Thanks!

C'est tout. J'ai toujours trouver le jeu assez similaire dans le ton ou certain aspect de l'écriture.

Yo, my name is DreamUHHH. I'm not a retro games collector or a purist or anything like that. I'm a music producer who's favorite game of all time is Mother 3.
On the release party of my 2nd album about a month ago, I met this girl who runs a retro games store inside the building I threw the party out of. In it, was a Magnavox CRT that I ended up buying from her.
I sample using the GameCube and mine was already modded, so I started by emulating EarthBound using an SNES emulator on the GameCube and I was blown away, realizing that the game I thought I knew my whole life was a completely different game once put onto a CRT with minimal input lag.
So naturally I think, "what if i get mother 3 playing on this screen too?" I try to emulate it on the GameCube, it doesn't work, so then I pivot to the GameBoy Player. I was sold on it when I realized it natively played GameBoy Cartridges, so I buy it, and an English translation cartridge for Mother 3.
3 days ago it arrives, and I'm ready to play the game and sample some GameBoy sounds, but I notice when I launch the game there are borders making it look like a little box on my screen.
So I spend about an hour trying to figure out how to stretch the game, make it fullscreen. I actually did it, but it would cause the screen to shift and shake, so at some point I say fuck it, and just decide to run it at 3:2 with the box on my screen. I realized at some point that, the GameBoy player isn't just a cool accessory that upscales GameBoy games for the TV, it's a GameBoy advance that outputs a TV signal. If it was released in 2003, it's safe to assume most games made during that time up until 2006 when mother 3 was released, were made with the knowledge that the GameBoy Player would have their games on a TV screen.
I genuinely believe this is the way Itoi intended for the game to be played in Japan. I've beat this game twice and emulated it plenty of times, and this game has never looked more cinematic, beautiful, or RIGHT than on my CRT running the GameBoy Player.
When I play on here all of a sudden a lot of things make sense. Rhythm combos are fun to do on the GameCube controller, the soundtrack sounds insanely full and as if the GameCube audio chip is outputting real, live instruments, and you can hear layers in the OST you genuinely can't hear from a digital approximation or even the handheld versions.
That 3:2 box I tried to expand earlier? I'm happy I didn't. This game actively fucks with your perception and creates one of the most unique graphical and directional styles I've seen in anything. It gives a huge illusion of depth when the game is a square box on your TV.
Here are some pics I've taken of my playthrough of Chapter 1 so far. This game is beautiful, I understand now that Mother 3 on the GBA wasn't a compromise, it was the only place Itoi's vision could've lived.

For context, i'm currently almost at the master belch fight, and this is probably my biggest gripe with the game. Shigesato designed the progression with the assumption that most people playing the game would also have the players guide, which I can understand. But for an unsuspecting person playing the game for the first time without the handbook, tell me HOW they are supposed to know that they need to talk to a random guy in the winters boarding house to get a key, realize it doesn't work, backtrack to the guy so he gives you something else, and then go back to finally get your stuff so you can progress, without looking it up. It's not even the ways of progression that pisses me off, it's how the game on it's own gives you little to zero hints on what you should do next unless you're body cavity searching every room. Still a peak game though

I was thinking about this today, haha!!
"Ah, so Ness doesn't like cell phones? Is that it?" Actually, it's something else... He can't have a "smartphone"... unless it's an old phone... like in the game... not because he might damage the device because of his psi... quite the opposite... This ends up causing interference between the phone and his psi. And besides, he's a child, he can't have cell phones... just like most people...
[None of this has been proven in the official game, but even so, from my point of view, I think it would be like that... Another thing... Whether this would be good or bad, I don't know... but that's it...]

Let's say hypothetically, Ness was a real person, and, just like in the games, his connection with his dad is only via the telephone. Let's also assume Ness really wants to actually spend with his dad, but the only times he can visit him is every other weekend. How could Ness be able to spend time with his dad (going twice a week is not an option because ness' mom want to also spend time with him)
