AI What do you verify before deleting the previous boot environment after a major upgrade?

A successful boot after a major FreeBSD upgrade does not prove the previous boot environment is no longer needed. The base system may be current while packages, kernel modules, jails, boot-loader settings, ZFS features, or services that run only on a schedule still have problems. Deleting the rollback environment immediately removes the simplest recovery path before those less visible dependencies have been exercised.

A useful validation pass seems to include the running kernel and userland versions, `freebsd-version -kru`, package consistency, loader and `rc.conf` changes, network and storage services, out-of-tree modules, jails or bhyve guests, scheduled jobs, monitoring, and a controlled reboot. I would also confirm that the old environment is actually bootable, record how to select it from the loader, keep config and data backups outside the root pool, and define a retention window rather than deleting it as soon as disk space looks tight.

What is your actual evidence gate before removing the previous boot environment? Which failures tend to appear only after the second reboot, a package upgrade, or a rarely used service starts?

AI Biggest ZFS Misconfigurations and How to Fix Them: Part 1 - Klara Systems

Thumbnail
klarasystems.com
44 Upvotes

ZFS configuration decisions can affect storage performance for years, and some cannot be changed without rebuilding the pool. Learn how to identify and fix common misconfigurations involving ashift, recordsize, vdev layout, dedup, and pool capacity. …

Key takeaways:

  • Plan ashift and pool layout before deployment. ashift is fixed when a vdev is created, and changing pool layout can require a rebuild.
  • ZFS recordsize should be tuned for the workload. The article uses 16K for MySQL/InnoDB, 8K for PostgreSQL, and 1M for large sequential files as examples.
  • Dedup adds memory and I/O overhead, and nearly full ZFS pools face slower allocation and increased fragmentation. Use dedup only where the data justifies it and treat roughly 80% pool utilization as a planning threshold.

Note

… The story is improving: OpenZFS 2.3 shipped Fast Dedup, which Klara helped build, with a smaller table and the ability to prune single-copy entries. It moves dedup from “almost never” to “viable when the data justifies it.” That last clause still does all the work. …

discussion FreeBSD With an RX 9060 XT

After trying multiple times over the past ~1 year, it appears that 9000 series AMD GPUs are finally able to be used! I'm not sure how long this has been the case, but it appears to be stable so far under KDE Plasma6, both X11 and Wayland. Yes, I consider Plasma to be rather bloated; however, on a system like this, I don't see that as a huge issue. Obligatory fastfetch screenshot attached.

AI FreeBSD Release Cycles and Enterprise Requirements: Why LTS Matters – Klara Inc

Thumbnail
klarasystems.com
13 Upvotes

FreeBSD’s release cadence works well for many environments, but enterprise systems and products often operate on much longer lifecycles. This article examines how long-term support addresses the gap between FreeBSD’s support window and the security, hardware, and migration requirements of production environments. …

Key takeaways:

  • FreeBSD support cycles can be shorter than enterprise hardware and product lifecycles, which creates a support gap for long-lived production systems.
  • FreeBSD enterprise LTS extends security coverage beyond standard EOL dates and gives organizations more control over major upgrade schedules.
  • Effective LTS requires security backports, upstream alignment, change tracking, and a clear migration path.

FreeBSD: The Hidden Cost of Upgrading in Production - Klara Systems (2026-09-16)

FreeBSD is free to license, but production upgrades carry operational costs. Learn how upgrade best practices can reduce those costs and how LTS can bridge the gap when a production fleet cannot migrate before EOL. …

Key takeaways:

  • FreeBSD upgrade costs include engineer-hours, maintenance windows, testing, package changes, configuration review, and post-upgrade validation.
  • Upgrade costs grow with fleet size as the same upgrade and validation cycle repeats across batches. Certified or audited environments may also require application revalidation after a major version change.
  • ZFS boot environments, staged rollouts, pre-built packages, configuration as code, testing, and release-calendar planning can reduce upgrade costs. LTS can bridge the gap when a fleet cannot migrate before EOL.

discussion How far is FreeBSD from having persistence in Ventoy?

I’ve seen that Ventoy supports persistence for some Linux distros, especially Ubuntu.

A persistent ISO could become a much more complete and user-friendly rescue live CD with custom scripts, troubleshooting utilities, documentation, etc.

How difficult would it be to implement something like this? Is the main limitation in the FreeBSD installer, the live filesystem, or the way persistence is handled by Ventoy?

It feels like there’s a lot of potential here.

discussion How much resources does FreeBSD use?

I’m currently using Windows and thinking about trying FreeBSD.

I’m wondering how lightweight it actually is compared to Windows or Linux.

How much RAM and CPU does it normally use when idle with something like XFCE or KDE?

And how much storage does a fresh installation usually take?

After installing the desktop environment, drivers, updates, and a few basic apps, how much storage space would I realistically need?

I’m using an older PC, so I’m mainly looking for something lightweight.

Also, how beginner-friendly is FreeBSD for someone coming from Windows?

news pkg-be-plugin – plugin for pkg(8) to auto-create ZFS boot environments

Thumbnail freshports.org
21 Upvotes

pkg-be-plugin is a pkg(8) plugin that automatically creates a ZFS boot environment before each install, upgrade, or deinstall transaction. If a transaction leaves the system in a broken state, the pre-transaction BE provides a clean rollback point.

The plugin uses libbe(3) directly with no subprocess invocations of bectl(8) or zfs(8). Boot environments are pruned automatically based on a configurable keep count and minimum age. …

help needed minidlna only serves some files

Thumbnail
image
10 Upvotes

I'm running minidlna-1.3.3_10,1 on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p3.

I've got various kinds of video files sitting in my minidlna folder, mostly MP4 and MKV, from various sources, and most of them are being served perfectly well: I can watch them on my TV and my phone, and other devices, as long as they're connected to my home network.

Some files aren't being served. I can watch them using VLC on my FreeBSD box, so the issue isn't a problem with the files per se, but minidlna doesn't make them available on the network. Some of those that don't work have the same user and group ownership and permissions as other files that do work, so I don't think it's that, either.

My best guess is that minidlna is failing to understand these files properly. I'm not quite sure how it works — does it serve the raw file, or does it stream video? — but on some level I guess it has to at least recognise that a given file is legit video in order to serve it, so my guess is that there's something about the way those particular files were created that minidlna doesn't like. I've tried to compare "good" and "bad" files using mediainfo, but there's just too much information there! I understand very little of it, and I have no idea what might be useful and what is irrelevant.

So, is there some super-easy config setting that I've missed?

Or, is it possible to install minidlna plugins, perhaps, that give it wider capabilities? Or can I install those capabilities system wide in FreeBSD itself?

Or, do I simply have to convert the "bad" files to a format that minidlna understands? And if so, what are the important parameters? What do I need to change?

Thanks,
Ben
