As someone who only had had a Playstation my whole life I recently got an Xbox 360 and have been collecting 360 and og xbox games, it's been really fun finding out what I missed out on
3
u/TheRealCreedux 1d ago
Nice, I've got all the major consoles going back from Atari 2600 up to PS5 / Series X. I'm very guilty of neglecting to play my OG Xbox, 360, One X and Series X. I just don't find the controllers comfortable with the offset thumb sticks. I need to find alternative controllers with the Playstation thumb stick arrangement

IMO people are acting like Sony is sending out an EMP pulse to destroy all physical games everywhere because it's a trendy doomer thing to do for internet points. They got swept up in a cycle of outrage.

Honestly given the demand and how they're being discontinued, I feel like the prices will boom like crazy

Will it in any way affect my enjoyment in playing video games?
No

I'll stick with everything Ps5 and prior for all console makers, thanks. Maybe I'll bite the bullet 6 years into the Ps6's life cycle to play the backlog. If there is a backlog considering the state of gamedev atm.
-1
u/Top-Waltz5244 1d ago
This reminds me of old people saying there’s no good music nowadays…I’ve been gaming for 30 plus years and we’re still getting amazing games…look at EX 33
8
u/CustodialApathy 1d ago
Oh I know we're getting incredible games, I'll just not buy a $1000 Ps6 until 2034
1
u/meowmix778 1d ago
When the PS5 came out I decided it'd be the last console I'd buy. I've almost always kept a PC and the current consoles but with the PS4 being an elaborate gaming PC and then the PS5 being a minor iteration on that it felt like I was just buying a 2nd gaming PC.
The thing that really drove the point home is how the digital version's optional disc drive needs an internet connection to work. That means the thing is about as useful as a GCK. I have the PS5 launch disc system and I do own a healthy PS4/5 library but I'm not spending 1000 bucks on any console.

u/meowmix778 1d ago
This is a bit melodramatic and to be honest I don't get the sentiment.
But this doomer attitude is tiring. I'm not happy that physical media is being put aside.
But that doesn't mean all video games are going to be destroyed and gone. There are literal decades of games to be played and to collect.
And just because it's not printed on a disc/cart doesn't mean new games won't be fun to play. I think of all the indie games that I've played over the years without a physical release, or the games I have on my Steam library that give me hours and hours of fun.
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to prefer and favor a physical release more often than not. But there comes a point where you're obsessing over a totem that represents the game vs. actually enjoying games. The bigger focus needs to be on ensuring consumer protection for digital purchases.
I just think a lot of people on this sub are more interested in collecting plastic than they are the actual games.
1
u/_Grim_Lavamancer 22h ago
Its kind of ironic too, Baldurs Gate 3 didn't even have a physical release initially. Then Larian released a physical version through their website later. Virtue signaling about Sony ending physical media with a game that was never intended to be on disc to begin with. Was this person outraged at Larian for not choosing to release it physically?
1
u/Jgzerohour 21h ago
The big reason heavy collectors i know plan to stop in 2028 is because they recognize that the already inflated prices on the market are just going to get worse when supply for everything becomes limited
1
u/meowmix778 21h ago
I think thats just people speculating to toss a brick on the accelerator for pricing.
I own most of the Genesis NA set and it just takes time and patience.
0
u/Jgzerohour 21h ago
speculation is the core foundation of Every investors portfolio, and the majority of people who arent collectors and even alot that are treat collecting like investments making it harder for actual collectors who do it for love. And i absolutely can see it getting worse when even ps5 discs become limited
1
u/Rodinator0001 13h ago
I agree.
Once graded games becomes the norm, the prices are going to inflate to insane levels.
1
u/Jgzerohour 13h ago
Gods graded games confuse me, like cards i can understand because you still get the art and stuff but a graded game is unplayable, defeating the purpose of a game
1
u/Upset_Plenty 18h ago edited 18h ago
I have an enormous backlog of video games on physical media. So many that are probably like 100+ hour RPG games that before I purchase any of the new digital only games my plan is to try to get through them. Honestly, the news that they’re scrapping physical media, is kind of relaxing a little bit because as a collector now I don’t feel so pressured to get through xyz game because the new one is coming out or whatever. Now I just don’t care because I’ll never buy a collectors edition game for PC which is what I’ll move to for new games. Steam is known for having better prices if you’re willing to wait for some bundles and I’ll just get any of these other games over there. Part of the console experience is physical media. I’m not going to stop playing games, I’m going to stop chasing them and boycott collectors editions with no physical copy.
There’s nothing doom and gloom about this change for indie game devs. I’m not expecting them to make physical copies all the time. I understand that’s a whole expense that they take on for no other reason than making fans happy. For AAA devs though? That’s a non negotiable if I’m paying over $40.
EDIT: I forgot to include that the “plastic” you’re talking about is just part of the ritual when it comes to console gaming for me. Having the case on a shelf and other things on display make the hobby of collecting what it is. In my mind it’s not much different than having a physical paper book on the shelf. It’d be much more efficient to just download a pdf file of a book and read it on my display of choosing. I still prefer books though.
2
u/meowmix778 18h ago
I jumped off the AAA train when games hit 70 bucks.
I've been digging out my backlog with the patient gamers sub and I've been replaying old favorites.
1
u/Zeevy_Richards 22h ago
Collectors own more games than they are capable of playing in a lifetime and you're big revelation is that people are collecting the plastic? Where have you been? Sealed collecting is a niche within the community how are you just now realizing?
1
-1
u/OggPoggRogg 16h ago
It's about ownership. Not all the nonsense shit you're trying to make ot about.
They want to sell you something you don't own. If you're not against that you're a fucking idiot.
1
u/meowmix778 1h ago
Two thoughts.
If its exclusively about ownership I have wonderful news. There are literal decades of games to buy.
If youre in favor of ownership you should be supporting things like stop killing games and work on protecting people who buy digitally. Not screaming "muh discs" or virtue signaling to this sub about never ever buying a game ever again.
A cool tech I discovered a few years ago (and its a bit niche so try to follow along) you can actually play video games.

u/Ars_Armegis 10h ago
Well rest assured nobody will ensure consumer protection for digital purchases so don't worry our dystopian hellscape is guaranteed, thanks to sony and their decision to abandon physical media. Thank you Sony.

1
u/Repulsive-Front8294 23h ago
No difference except the fact that the game is heavily censored in the Japanese version, which is a massive difference. It’s not just cosmetics, the game has entire choices removed from it in the JP version.

They've launched a "disc to digital" program, and word is their next console (Helix) won't have a disc drive at all.

Unless they actually announce it, we can assume they aren’t removing it. “Word is” doesn’t count for anything.

This!!, sorry I should have been more clear with my post, yes I wish they released this at retail, my bad
1
u/Sukaichan92 11h ago
Only able to purchase through developer sites is honestly the best.
It used to be that only fans knew about the dev sites to buy exclusives/special/limited/collector editions from them.
Now scalpers are everywhere. The more public games have a release, the more likely those who truly love something wont get it.
I never missed any game, or any geeky nerdy product I wanted, until tiktok, influencers, and covid happened. (2018 was the last good year for true fans/gamers/collectors)
Since about 2019 to now, I miss out on so much due to scalpers, and clout chasers/influencers.
2
u/Jaxonhunter227 1d ago
Thankfully Japanese copies are basically the exact same and relatively easy to get your hands on
1
u/Viper0817 22h ago
Ahh, didn’t know that!!!, they have the voice acting available in English? Didn’t realize that you could use games from other markets, thought they were region locked (never looked into it to be honest), thanks for the info
1
u/Jaxonhunter227 21h ago
Region locking is kinda a thing of the past, though i should warn you i recently found out the Japanese versions are censored so you might want to look into that too see if the things censored are things you'd care about or not.
1
u/Repulsive-Front8294 23h ago
They are not. Don’t spread misinformation.
2
u/WesThePretzel 21h ago
What is wrong about that? As far as I can see, the Japanese edition has English audio. Is there something else different?
1
u/Jaxonhunter227 21h ago
They also told me in a different comment I made that the Japanese physical versions are censored which is a difference i didn't know about.

Probably a good decision, although if anything the move away from physical media is just gonna increase the value of your games
3
u/Suspicious_Cap2670 1d ago
only sony going fully digital not xbox at this point
2
u/twoclose4comfort 1d ago
Yea… I’ve been an Xbox gamer, and literally every title I see for sale on their digital storefront I immediately check if there is a physical release available, and 90% of the time over the last several years there is only Sony/Nintendo physical releases.
On top of that, Microsoft has had a rule regarding limited quantity releases… and that’s why Xbox doesn’t get any Limited Run releases either.
Microsoft went from being the worst in terms of physical media, to the best in terms of physical media pretty much overnight.
Sony stopped.
Nintendo created game key cards.
Microsoft went disc-to-digital.Shame. But, honestly, had gaming stopped at Xbox360/Ps3/Wii-Wiiu I’d had been just fine. Still thousands of games on those consoles I’d love to play and own. I honestly get irritated when a new console gen releases because I don’t even see the need.

u/Negative-Ad291 1d ago
And.....where? Dude, do you SEE anyone buying Xbox games? Walmart and Target want Xbox space GONE from their stores.

-1
u/CustodialApathy 1d ago
Physical to digital is a hint. Expect Xbox to either announce "we're sticking to physical!!1! to try and stick it in sony's eye, or for xbox to let sony deal with the blowback for a couple years before inevitably, quietly, making the change

u/Spocks_Goatee 1d ago
This is the same thing VUDU used to do for DVD to digital copies a decade ago.

Even though things went slightly differently for me, I really see myself in what you write. Ever since Sony made that announcement, I stopped buying and even playing altogether. It’s not about Sony per se, but because my collection is 99.99% physical, and even though I’m a user across all console platforms, knowing that I won't be able to buy everything in that format anymore completely killed my desire to collect. Because let’s be honest: Microsoft and Nintendo won't be any different, it's just a matter of who does it first and who comes next.
On top of that, I am deeply opposed to Game key cards and so many of the commercial strategies that have been gaining ground for years now, to the point where I no longer see video games as my safe haven from life’s storms or as a way to express my passion.
Since the day of the "strike," I disconnected all my consoles from the internet and decided to use them solely as Blu-ray movie players. No longer needing an Ethernet connection for online gaming, I also canceled my home internet line and now rely solely on my phone's hotspot, especially since over the past few years I'm usually away from home for work several months at a time. One less expense.
What makes me smile (in a positive way) about your post is that you, too, find yourself closing, or saying a temporary goodbye to, a journey that lasted years or decades with the exact same title: Baldur's Gate 3. I bought this edition as soon as it became available on Larian's website, maybe a couple of years ago, but I only found the time to play it seriously and finish it (after almost 400 hours) this summer. It might very well be the last game I ever play. A truly beautiful experience; I’m happy to have closed this chapter with it.
It’s also ironic that I got back into, or rather, seriously into video games a long time ago with Diablo 2, then viewed Skyrim as the best all-around game of all time, and ended this journey with BG3. They are three very different RPGs, but they share one crucial thing: all three have a soul. Perhaps the very thing that is being lost the most in modern gaming today.

C'est dommage de perdre le goût du jeux vidéo a cause de ces crevards de Sony/Microsoft/nintendo. Il y a aujourd'hui suffisamment de patrimoine vidéo-ludique pour jouer toute une vie et au delas.

Short version:
I somewhat disagree and think not buying physical media is not exactly pushing Sony to keep it alive either. Seems counterproductive to me but I'm also not dictating OP what to do of course.
Long version:
I'm in no way telling you to keep buying physical games. Of course you are free to do whatever you want. But I can't help but feel that so many people on Reddit are being dramatic about this to an extreme and make decisions that don't even make sense in regards to their reasons to do so.
Not buying physical games is sort of the opposite of what should be done. If no one bought digital, and everyone bought physical only, Sony would revert their decision very quickly. Naturally, this scenario is completely unrealistic and even I buy digital sometimes, if not rarely. Although, it's usually indie titles and mostly on Switch (1/2). I buy physical because I think it matters. But I will also not deny the convenience of digital on occasion.
Also, maybe I missed the info, so someone let me know if I did, but I can't recall Xbox officially stating they're goinf to follow suit with Sony's no disc announcement. Many see the disc to digital feature Xbox just introduced as a "soft transition" to kind of soften the blow for when they eventually announce the discless future. I can see this being a concern but I am the kinda person that reserves judgment until I see facts/official statements about this.
What I definitely can say is that I won't buy a console that doesn't offer physical media at all. So if it's the case for both future Xbox and PlayStation systems, I'd be out as well. That said I'm still very happy with my PS4 and Series X and I don't even need a new system any time soon as many other people also say. The jump between generations is just not as huge anymore without making consoles that break the bank.
This got longer than intended. If you stick around until the end, kudos and thanks for your time!
2
u/9TyeDie1 19h ago
The next xbox isnt going yo have a disk drive, that's why disk to digital exists.
None of the next generation of consoles (including the switch 2, bc those cards are just a key for a download) will have phisical media in any meaningfull way.
It boils down to not being able to play any of those games past their sundown and end of life. We could buy every game ever produced for those consoles but it's meaningless if they all unplayable within 20 years.
1
u/MattLoganGreen 19h ago
It's a very cynical way of seeing things to be honest. Can you link an source official source stating the next generation of Xbox consoles won't have a disc drive? I'm not saying this is out of the realm of possibilities but I don't recall any official statements about this as of yet.
With the exception of Pokopia, all Nintendo Switch 2 games that are either developed by Nintendo or 2nd party studios are not game-key cards. Many developers also decided to go for regular cartridges. Some examples: Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight & Silksong, Stellar Blade and Hades II. Admittedly, the amount of 3rd party stuff on a full cartridge is depressingly low but at the end of the day you can at the very least still sell game key cards and I doubt Nintendo themselves is planning to change their physical releases anytime soon.
What do you mean by your last paragraph? I'm not sure if I misunderstood or not.

u/Sad_Society3633 1d ago
In my 40s now and I remember during the xbox 360 and ps3 gen reading comments section on different sites where gamers were saying they were unhappy with the way the gaming industry was and how they were thinking of finding new hobbies. I thought they were crazy and was thinking the opposite at the time but lo and behold here we are a few generations down and im thinking the very same thing. I don't think sony PlayStation realises what physical media means to so many people. Its not even just about ownership to me, I have happy nostalgic memories of my mother buying me video games in 90s. I remember going to Currys and Dixons (England) and picking out a Sega Megadrive II and the game that i wanted with it. The drive home was the best feeling ever. No digital this or that. Unwrap the console and game and slam that badboy in and i was playing Streets Of Rage and Golden Axe. This memory itself helps lower cortisol for me and is almost a good enough stress relief as playing games these days. Future generations won't have that if Sony has its way
1
u/Revolutionary-Zone17 1d ago
Where did you order it from? I have a hard time forking over $70+ on a digital game, too.

I also recently got the physical Deluxe Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Both are games I originally played digitally on PC. These are going to be the last physical games I get, and I’m going to stop collecting for many years.
1
u/Anxious_Camp_2160 1d ago
"xbox is leaving physcial media", not sure where you heard this, but (so far) it's not true.
And no doubt they now have a MASSIVE reason to keep a drive (or use a Switch like keycard if nothing else).

Geez man don't write it like that. Thought you were on your last legs or something. Damn you can still play Nintendo stuff they won't go all digital at all. It's just not stable for their platform plus there's not enough memory to expand on their side. So cart is their way to go

I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised by Xbox’s recent move! The convenience of a digital game, being able to just select it and play, is obviously really nice. I’m not one who is too lazy to grab a case and put a game in but now I don’t even have to do that. I’ve put all of my games in and received my digital licenses. Now I can switch to any game I own, digital or physical, and it’ll play without needing to insert the disc. That’s less wear and tear on the cases and discs and I dig it! If I want to sell a game, I remove that license and sell it. I’d say that’s how you properly support a digital future while respecting the physical media.
