Discussion I blame Japan 😬😂

I started my collecting journey after my first trip to Japan, and it quickly snowballed into what you see here!

Before that, I was actually a huge adopter of digital games to "save space." I never really thought about what I was giving up just for convenience. But with everything going on with digital “ownership” lately, it feels more important than ever to continue buying physical copies. Also fun activity to do with my gf.

Just wanted to share my progress with people who get it! Have any of you had a similar "wake-up call" that made you switch back to physical or did you never stop?

I had a midlife crisis a couple years ago and went completely back to collecting and playing 4th and 5th gen exclusively...

A lot of it is Japan only release games too.

Well I hope things are going well now. I’m not exactly sure where my attention is going to be for retro games. I do know I want to complete my collection of mainline Pokemon games though.

Doing better these days thanks. Mostly an issue of rediscovering hobbies/interests/time for myself after having young kids.

Love me some Pokémon games but my wallet is secretly glad I dont try to collect them CIB in nice condition!

Yeah, balancing all those things all at once has to be tough. But I’m glad to see you’re getting back into things you enjoy. Keep it up!!

You’re telling me, we’re missing Gen 1-3 CIBs so basically all the expensive ones lol.

Around the time I started working and making my own money I started feeling bad about wasting so much on «collecting» imaginary stuff that I won’t ever be able to give away, re-sell or even just look at in person. All the digital stuff I’ve purchased will always be tied to my account and eventually disappear. That was my realization.

Physical is more convenient for me and makes much more sense financially.

Yeah, I completely understand that sentiment. For me, having everything tied to digital accounts feels a bit sad. Once I'm gone, unless Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft keep their servers up forever, nobody can access those games anymore—it's like that entire part of me just disappears.

With physical media, even if my collection is just given away after I pass, it could make someone truly happy. Or, if my family sells it off, it could potentially help them pay for living expenses while keeping my memory alive. It’s a way for a piece of you to keep living on, even after death. That’s how I feel, and that makes me happy.
