Thought I'd show off what I have built. All my life i have only really on PlayStation and only bought physical. Guess time for me to move on.

PC here I come!

Edit: as I have had many comments no i am not selling my collection its my life's work so far but it will not grow anymore.

And also I am aware PC is also digital, the point being I have to now start a digital library and PC is the best option for that not PlayStation

About 20 years ago I visited a game forum where a collector had just posted pictures of a complete set of North American PlayStation games showing the front covers. It was a lot of pictures to look at and while scrolling through I saw a long box version of a PlayStation game for the first time. I knew at that moment that I was going to collect every long box version of PlayStation games. I had never owned or even seen a PlayStation in person before this. When I had finished collecting all the long box versions and purchased my first PlayStation console, I thought about what I should do next. Since someone already had a complete North American set, I saw no reason to duplicate that accomplishment and decided that I would instead collect the PlayStation games that I wanted from all over the world, in every region and create something that was my own and uniquely special. I repeated this process through each new generation of PlayStation consoles. I never shorted any other collections I had going on while doing this. I still seriously collected Nintendo, Sega and Xbox games as well. But there was just something special about collecting PlayStation games who's library simply dwarfed everyone else. In a few short years my collection will span the complete lifetime of physical PlayStation games. It's not something I wanted to happen, but it is something I will always be amazed to have been part of. What a ride!

Collection Finally got my game room together

Been collecting since (arguably) the mid 90s but it’s been growing in boxes for the past 15yrs or so. We moved house and one of the things I really wanted was a game room. I’m very fortunate that I’ve got one and been able to do this. I will say that I’m a player-grade collector and don’t want to be a box-custodian (I can’t ruin a box if I don’t have it), although I do have a stack of boxes for consoles in a cupboard. Before looking, know that I love protecting the weird, the unloved and the lower-end experiences. I skew towards racing/flying games and don’t enjoy RPGs, hence why they’re all missing!

I built the unit myself. It’s ~3.1m wide and each location was juggled to be about as narrow as possible and keep low. There’s space behind but I wasn’t too bothered about fully hiding wires, although I did run some horizontal trunking for video. Some of the consoles have pull out shelves but most are ok without. The LED strip is RGBWW with controller on top - I always wanted that style for it.

Technically, I used to do broadcast audio so am handy with wires. The switching units are Extron, ex-broadcast grade kit often used for high-end presentations and stage events. It’s not wanted now so is relatively cheap and obtainable. That said, I can’t find another 12-input composite so if you have one, I’d be interested! I personally love the jumper locations on the front panel for easy G-Con hookup as it just makes it that little easier to get something out and use it.

I’m not a fan of modifying consoles (barring the odd exception) so most is composite, with a bit of component and where it’s scart, converting to component. The idea was to have a TV that suited the era of the consoles, hence the left TV is for PS2/Wii era and the top TV for PS3/Wii-U/onwards. I aimed to have any console visible on any TV but am almost there. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste but I’m happier experiencing video ā€œas it wasā€, not chasing the dragon on an ever decreasing return of picture quality. The right is a 36’’ late 100hz Toshiba flat-CRT with native component bought from the house clearance of an ex-CRT repairman’s mum, the top is a ~2015 era 4K Samsung and the right was ex-courtroom 28’’(?) Panasonic late 4:3 with low hours on a lazy-Susan so it spins a little.

One of the PS1 is SD-converted, partially for ease of link-cable games and partially to play a few patched-video Japanese games like Jet de Go and Initial D. Both PS2 have HDD adaptors but again, only for iLink/Netplay and a few Japanese games. The VideoPac (Magnavox Odyssey 2 for non PAL region) is SCART modified. The Master System is AV modified. I’m missing a GameCube (with an old guest in that location) but I missed it in-period so am not so bothered yet, an can play Donkey Konga on a Wii anyway. The PS5 is disc only (because I was offered it at an insane deal) but only exists for Gran Turismo and the Switch is my daughter’s. I’m debating modifying the Famicom (already modified to AV out) with socketed controllers as it’s not much use with the controllers at that length. The SNES has a Super MagiCom in it and a Bung64 is on my eventual to-buy list - more for ā€˜weirdness’ than use.

Shelving isn’t final yet. I’m going to sort a 3D printer so I can rack the SNES/N64 and loose Megadrive carts. My Gameboy/GameGear games are away until this is done, as are my PS1 memory cards. I’d like the cassettes for the C64 to be better located than in a shoebox so will do that at the same time.

Still to do: fit the link cable (ordered) for the PS2s; finish the wiring to split the inputs for the right TV: replace the scart-component converter on the VideoPac; replace the component-scart converter on the right TV; clean some paint off the floor; put up a few more controller bins; route component (duplicate right TV) to top TV; replace the sofa with something less awful; and sort 3D printed holders for stuff.

Can’t wait to get people round to enjoy it. Really can’t wait for link-cable Time Crisis 2!

Collection Have you ever bought a console… for just one game?

Thumbnail

1.9k Upvotes

Long story short, in popped in my local game shop on a random afternoon and saw a grail I genuinely thought I’d never see in person.. the one the only Pepsi Man…. Even being sold at lose disc price still included its case.. I could not pass up this opportunity.

But I couldn’t play it! So impatiently instead of figuring out a soft mod, I wandered in a different shop in my neighborhood and what were they odds they had a NTSC-J PS1 in box of all things collecting dust on their shelf’s. Sold it to me on a deal too because it had sat for so long.

Absolutely incredible I get to play its classic Japanese Gem, equal parts spent too much and got pretty incredible deals.

Are there any games in y’all’s collections that have made you pick up a whole console specifically to play one game? Anyone got any other recommendations for fun weird Japanese ps1 games I should find??

Collection My gameroom is complete after years in storage

Storytime:

I finally have the gameroom I've wanted for years. It took many, many hours and late nights but it's finally done.

My wife and I bought this house last year as we outgrew our last place (kids). This room needed a lot of work which was primarily done by me. I dont have a background in anything related to renovation/contracting but I do have the internet and have had some help with the flooring from my father and FIL. Down below I linked an album showing the progress made over the past year.

DIY stuff:

For flooring I laid down high traffic vinyl planking across the entire basement (~850sqft) over an underlayment which rests ontop of tile. For paint, my color scheme was inspired by the most legendary game console ever, the NES. The walls reflect the two tone greys along with the semi-gloss black and red accents. The floor trim was measured, cut, and installed by me (very satisfying to get this done). The shelving I measured, cut, primed, and painted from poplar wood since it's a stronger than pine which tends to bend. Poplar is a great stiff wood and is cheaper when compared to oak. I got the idea for these style shelves from youtubers Saturday Morning Gamer and Morts Garage. The lighting is slim LED lighting that has a "nite mode" at the flick of a switch. I have never done electrical beyond changing a fixture so this was a fun learning project. I also installed a modern lutron dimmer for dimming on both lighting types.

All the cardboard and fragile things are lifted well off the ground because I got some toddlers that love to grab things. I decided to go with custom shelves because I didn't want to have those cheap media tower shelves that sit on the floor. My house is also a raised ranch so I had to figure out how to make shelves from scratch to go above the permanent shelf that surrounds the room.

https://imgur.com/a/uMVwHYK

Now that the DIY stuff is out of the way...

For games, I only collect what I used to play back in childhood and ones that interest me. I'm not into collecting full sets or games that are "valuable". I have about 900-ish games and I'm mostly content. Looking to add more boxed games but i'm in no rush. I always wanted a gameroom that is practical hat is meant to ENJOYED. I will never understand the museum mentality where everything is in glass cases with no where to sit down.

I try to beat as many games as I can each year, thanks to inspiration from the "games we played" videos from MyLifeinGaming on YouTube. I'm currently having a blast playing Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS. I recently 103%'d Donkey Kong Country 3 on SNES, then before that beat Resident Evil 2 and 3 on Gamecube.

The CRT is a 32" Sony trinitron KV-FS120 which I have a Wii, PS2, and OG Xbox running through a component switcher. The SNES and N64 are on S-video, and the NES is on composite.

The 55" Sharp LED has an HDMI switcher for Xbox One, 360, PS4 Pro, Switch 1 and 2. Everything is run through a surround sound receiver and sounds amazing. The wiring and organizing for this was a pain FYI.

Collection Collection pics after 30 years

I've arrived at the point where I'm going to begin selling off, and I decided to take pics of how everything turned out. I worked at a video store in 1996 and began buying all of the clearance NES stuff at that time. From there, the collection started to grow, and I suppose this is the collection's final form.

There's a closet I turned into a room to store it all with custom shelves in an upstairs dormer, then outside of the closet with all of the consoles hooked to a CRT with built in shelving, and a downstairs room for all of the modern era consoles.

When I started to collect, I'd often have to leave flea markets because the car was too full and I couldn't possibly fit any more games/consoles in. No one wanted this stuff at the time, and it was baffling to watch the market just keep ballooning to a point where it was barely possible to keep going. I'm saddened that a lot of people never knew or never will understand the thrill of the hunt. Lots of memories and stories are on these shelves. I don't regret a single second.

Collection Found this gem on the job today

Thumbnail

4.8k Upvotes

My job involves helping people get rid of things they don’t need anymore so you can only imagine my face as I watched the guy throw it on a pile of stuff he was throwing away. At first I thought it was just an empty box but when I picked it up and felt the weight I froze. I saw the seal and my heart dropped. I had a PS1 as kid but my dad gave it away when he bought me a PS2 . I’m so happy to have one again.

Edit: So I did turn it on and the screen is very dark but I can make out the start up logo and there is sound coming through the speakers. I removed the screen and checked the connections and they’re clean. I reattached it and it’s still the same. I’m hoping if I put in a game it will fix it but I unfortunately don’t have one at the moment. I found a place near my work that has a used copy of Sargeā€s Heroes for a decent price that I plan of picking up after work. Here’s to hoping.

2nd Edit: I ended up buying Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and when I put the disc in, it loaded up just fine. The LCD screens backlight needs to be replaced but that is going to be a project for another day. All in all I’m still happy with this find and hopefully one day I’ll have the backlight replaced.

Collection I Cannot Believe My Luck — Found This Super Clean PS2 at Goodwill for $15.99

Thumbnail
image
3.5k Upvotes

I seriously can’t believe how this just happened.
About 30 minutes ago, I placed an order for some wings at Wingstop. While I was waiting for my food, I figured I’d walk into the nearby Goodwill and kill some time. I wasn’t even going in expecting to find a console. I was just hoping maybe I’d come across a game or two.
I walk over to the electronics section and there’s this PS2 sitting on the shelf for $15.99.
I had to do a double take.
Not only is it a PS2 sitting out at Goodwill in 2026, but this thing is ridiculously clean for its age. For $15.99, I grabbed it immediately.
What makes the whole situation even crazier is the timing. It was already after 7 PM when I found it. There’s no way I can imagine a PS2 priced this low sitting on that shelf all day without someone grabbing it. An employee must have put it out recently, and I just happened to walk in at exactly the right time while waiting for my Wingstop order.
I actually thought Goodwill stopped putting new merchandise out after around 3 PM, which makes this even more unexpected.
I haven’t had the chance to fully test it yet, but $15.99 for a PS2 this clean is an absolute jackpot find. These consoles are getting older, clean examples aren’t getting any easier to stumble across, and finding one randomly at a thrift store for this price is exactly why I keep checking.
All because I had a few minutes to kill waiting for some wings.

Will keep some of my childhood games.

Letting go of my game collection.
Been really cool being part of this community.

Edit; Reason:
I have really thought about it. My habits really stem down to playing the .iso version of the game on the console and I never truly use the physical game in the console. This collection mainly served as a display piece, I could use the money to serve other hobbies.

I posted a while ago in this thread, however I recently moved. So I had to tear down my room, pack it up, and rebuild it up here. A long and tiring process.. but this room is more than twice the size. Tried to get as much photos as I could but there is so much to take pics of, Reddit only allows 20 pics.

As usual, I like sections of themes. All my games are organized by console and then alphabetical. Also have all my Retro consoles hooked up to the tube TV for retro corner. (Had to get Bean bags)

The last photo isn't a recent one. So I have more stuff on my shelves but I forgot to take a new pic of the front of my display.

Just like to keep this thread updated šŸ˜Ž

Collection DIY Game Room (Before and After)

Thumbnail

3.4k Upvotes

I’ve always loved retro video games, and dare I say, collecting! I grew up poor, but my mom always rewarded my good grades or holiday celebrations with a new game to play, which in hindsight I realize was a huge expense.

I started buying games frequently when I was around 16 years old. My buddies and I would go to thrift stores and flea markets, and if you’re not around my age (40), you wouldn’t even be able to imagine the treasures you could find pre-eBay for pennies.

I held on to most of my games, recently became a doctor, and decided to renovate my basement and turn it into a small game room, and I haven’t regretted it once. I recently made some new updates, so I thought it was worth sharing. My physical game collection sits at around 1,000+. Very little filler here for me, but I’d encourage you to take your time and check it out. I’m always motivated by a detailed gaming Reddit post, so hopefully you enjoy this post as I enjoy making it.

My basement was unfinished, and I decided to expand my living area. I did most of it myself on the weekends, and the before and after photos speak for themselves. Feel free to offer feedback.

Collection updated my game room

little backstory, bought a house couple years ago and it had this tiny 70sq foot "storage" room. I added some fake wood paneling, going for a 70s/80s basement theme, and made it my game room. About a year ago, the fires in los angeles happened and missed us by about 40-50 feet. We had to vacate for 9 months or so, had a lot of renovations and had to re-do my game room (thankfully no smoke damage or anything to my collection). This time I got much better wood paneling, proper flooring etc. While we were displaced I had all my things in storage and finally got my dream machine, an Astro City cab. Fitting that back into the space was tough but I managed.

418 to be exact! It’s been almost a year since my last update where I had 200, and I want to thank everyone for the support! I’d like to especially highlight all of the people who have sent me their copies, I am so grateful.

I began collecting nearly two years ago, and I am getting closer to my next milestone of 500. I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be done collecting or what I’ll do with my games then, but for now I am having a great time hunting for these! Interestingly enough, I’ve met about a dozen people who collect Kinect Adventures as well!

Here’s to hundreds more!

Edit: I own all of these Kinect Adventures simply because it is fun to play and collect! I find these on shelves everywhere :)

Collection I have collected every dirt bike video game ever released in the US

Thumbnail
gallery
3.2k Upvotes

I've always loved riding dirt bikes in real life (although I haven't owned one in years) and playing the video game adaptations when i was younger. I have a collection of over 1000 physical video games but I mostly focus on JRPG's, which is my favorite category. But I noticed that I started to have a few dirtbike games and I figured there couldn't actually be that many of them in total and they were dirt cheap and in every used video game store so I put together a spreadsheet and realized there was only just over 100 of them with many of them only being about 5 bucks so I spent about a year collecting all of them! My parameters were to get all physical games devoted to dirt bikes, or if the game at least had a main dirtbike mode in it and was released physically in the US on consoles. Although eventually, I ended up buying PC physical releases because there was only about 10 of them total and I even bought a couple PAL and Japanese exclusives because there was only about 5 or 6 of those in total as well. Now, technically, I am missing one expensive and rare GBA game - Moto Racer Advance which sells for $200+ cart only, I am looking to get a repro of it if I can. Also, there is stunt kids on NES, which is not an officially licensed game and also expensive and I'm not sure if that one counts. Maybe I'll get that one someday. And then there is one new game that just came out Monster Supercross 25, which I'm just waiting to receive in the mail. There's also one physical DOS game called Motocross from 1989 but it's like $150-$250 and technically I don't collect the PC games. Those are the only outliers. Based on Google searching, I think I might be the first person who has ever collected every physical dirtbike game! There is a thread in this sub Reddit from 12 years ago by user named u/m0t0420 he had collected a bunch, but it was far from a full collection. But I hope I did him proud by finishing the job. Feel free to AMA.
