News Playtiles are now in retail stores: homebrew games in more hands!

Hey everyone, we’re super excited to share a small but meaningful milestone for us: Playtiles are now officially making their way into physical stores!

For anyone discovering us: Playtiles is a physical controller that attaches directly to your smartphone screen (no Bluetooth/batteries/cable), to turn your phone into a GB/GBC-style handheld. It comes bundled with our app + 24 GB homebrew games officially licensed from indie devs.

Until now, our they were shipping worldwide through our website and a few selected online retailers. But last week, we delivered our first batch of Playtiles Season 2 units to a dedicated retro gaming store in the EU!

This means a lot because it’s part of the mission we’ve set for ourselves: putting indie/homebrew games into more people’s hands.

We’re now working on expanding, so if you run a store or know someone who might be interested in carrying Playtiles, feel free to reach out (:

News Update 2: Diablo for Nintendo NDS

Before I start: I want you to give you my donation Link and I know it very very rude and you dont have money either but I want to make my drivers license for motorcycle in germany but its very expensive an because of I am a 14 year old NDS nerd I have nothing where I can earn money so here it is: https://ko-fi.com/koenigjibjib. Would be very nice If you had a Dollar to donate or 5!!!

So I've been trying to get DevilutionX running on an actual Nintendo DS. devkitPro/Calico, 256x192, just using my own DIABDAT.MPQ. No emulator shim, real port.

It actually boots now. Town loads, character spawns, you can walk around. The screen is continuous, nothing's split anymore, no OOM.

Most of the pain so far was coordinate stuff. The engine lays everything out for 640x480 and the DS screen is 256x192, so the item bar ended up at x = -192, which is where the "it's all in the middle" look came from. I mapped the UI down 640->256 and had to rescale the panel art, and that was the other bit — my first pass used nearest neighbour and it just dropped 3 of 5 pixels per axis. Looked like garbage. Switched to a mode filter (most common palette index per block) and the lines and edges came back.

Then there was the 2 fps thing, which took me a while to find. nthread_has_500ms_passed() is the multiplayer turn check. In singleplayer nothing ever advances last_tick, it just sits at whatever it was set to at startup, so ticksElapsed grows forever and once it's past 50ms drawGame is just permanently false. The game itself was running fine the whole time, it just only redrew every 500ms. Logic fine, picture frozen. One early return in that function for singleplayer and it went to a full frame rate.

The blit was the other big one. DS VRAM only takes 16 or 32 bit writes, the game is buffering 8-bit indexed, so that was 49k individual palette lookups per frame. Two pixels per 32-bit write now.

Fonts were annoying too. Smallest translated font is 12px but after the downscale a panel button is 7px tall, so text didn't fit. I generate a 6px variant from the 12px one host-side, and the original version I had was flattening every pixel to a single shade, which is why the menu text colour looked off. Now it averages the 2x2 block instead, so the glyphs keep the same brightness and the same translation tables, just smaller.

What's still wrong: the panel button labels (QUESTS, MANUAL, MENU) are baked into the sprite, not drawn as text. After the 2/5 shrink those letters are about 5px tall and unreadable. I think I need to pull them out and draw them as a separate overlay, but I haven't done it yet.

Biggest caveat: all of this is verified in melonDS only. Never been on real hardware.

For anyone poking at it: Calico/devkitPro, hand written SDL1 shim, custom heap with a pool allocator (4MB DS RAM, ~1.6MB used). For debugging I write a FAT16 log that I read from the host side, because the on-screen console text isn't OCR-able. That channel is the only reason I found any of this.

Anyone dealt with shrinking baked-in sprite text before? Not sure there's a nicer way than the overlay.

News [Update] A new milestone for Playtiles!

Hey everyone, some of you here have been following the project since the beginning, so we wanted to share this new milestone with you!

A year ago, we introduced Playtiles with a simple idea: create a new way to discover and play GB/GBC homebrew games, and put them into as many hands as possible.

That's why we built these tiny, electronics-free controllers that you simply stick onto your smartphone to turn it into a handheld console. They come with an app + a bundle of homebrew titles, officially licensed.

A simple and affordable way to enjoy games on its phone with real buttons, while supporting the devs.

Since then, we’ve shipped Playtiles to players in more than 40 countries, worked with dozens of indie developers, and watched this little experiment grow beyond what we imagined.

Today... We're happy to announce our collaboration with Mega Cat Studios!

A new bundle that includes a 4-button Playtiles controller together with 7 games from the studio's catalog (8bit & 16bit homebrew titles included). A pretty special milestone for us.

For those curious, you can learn more here: Mega Cat Studios Collection

And to everyone here who shared feedback, supported the project, or simply followed along: thank you very much!

News Denzen-3DS : I improved networking stack to be more friendly in emulators and also made System-Browser fully operational in emulator. With these improvements you can use your favorite homebrew apps like universal-updater to download stuff straight from emulator.

So basically, I was curious to test 3DS system browser and check how many website's still run on this ancient browser but my current emulator had some sort of issue which always caused 3DS browser to freeze. Then after a full weekend of debugging I found and patched the CPU scheduling bug causing it. This was a local/personal Azahar fork that I had. But released it as a non-fork to develop it independently for further homebrew and hardware accuracy experiments. So I may or may not occasionally apply upstream Azahar upgrades or just keep focusing on my own pace priorities.

Curiosity went further when I also wanted to test homebrew app shops and universal-updater but they either didn't load properly and if loaded couldn't download content due to bad download streaming implementation. And then after debugging this, fixed it too.

Debugging this way made broader compatibility because these were not mere title specific hacks just to make an app/game load but rather a general quality patch and in-fact led to better hardware accuracy at-least in incase of browser fix.

One may ask why even bother fixing this ancient browser, to which I can only say curiosity. And this ancient browser also deserves the same preservation efforts as games.

Am happy to share the release with you guys to test and have fun.

Attaching screenshots of some website's I browsed like old.reddit , neocities , duckduckgo lite etc. Also attached screenshot of now fully functional universal-updater and other homebrew apps like Anemone the theme downloader.

Do let me know in case of any questions :)

News A New Fortune Telling Game on NES and Famicom

I thought I'd share some screenshots of a new fortune telling game I have been working on for the NES and Famicom. You can choose what you want your fortune to be about (love / relationships, money / business, or travel / home life). Then enter your name, do a few things and receive a message. I'm still making some tweaks to the game but it is about 95% done. Text data is stored across three banks, it was a bear dedicating so many data banks just to text. Just thought I'd share some screenshots of the latest project of mine.

News [PS1] Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Hi everyone!

After projects like Mario 64 PSX, Half-Life PSX, and the recent PSX Splash Game Jam (new article soon), we have a lot of projects to cover in the PS1 homebrew scene. Today, we are going to talk about Zelda: OOT for the PS1!

Zelda: OOT is still highly experimental, but it’s already playable and includes basic movement, collision, and a surprisingly modern dual-stick camera system (like Dark Souls). The prototype was built using PSYQo, and the developer (u/izzy88izzy) explained the project also serves as a way to better understand PS1 hardware and improve another engine project called BONNIE-32 (check it out).

Performance is still very rough and there are several graphical issues, but considering the scale of Ocarina of Time, it’s already a fascinating technical achievement.

We go into more detail about the project, its technical challenges, and the current state of the prototype in our full article:
👉 Zelda: Ocarina of Time on PS1 Sounds Impossible…

Since nobody seems to have covered the project on YouTube yet, and we don't know how to compile it ourselves, we wanted to help spread the word by uploading gameplay footage recorded by izzy88izzy (full credit goes to the developer) on our channel:

On 25 May 2026, a special online event focused on two PS1 homebrew games will begin.

Until then, a community challenge starts now 👀

Can you guess the two games?

Rules:

  • Both are already released PS1 homebrew games.
  • Both games were created by the same developer.
  • You must correctly guess the full names of BOTH games.
  • Guesses can be posted on Reddit or Twitter/X (follow here for earlier hints).
  • Edited comments will not count.
  • The first correct guess will be selected as the winner.
  • The challenge closes on 24 May.

Daily visual hints will be posted until the reveal.

🏆 Prize

The first person to correctly guess both games will be permanently featured in the Awards section of psxhomebrewgames.com as “PSX Homebrew Detective Award 2026”.

This recognition is meant to highlight the player who actively explores and discovers hidden gems within the PS1 homebrew community, helping bring attention to creative homebrew projects that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Think you can solve it?
