This was me with the Musselburgh last year! It's soooo fun to work on something where you pay a little bit of attention periodically but there's a lot of stockinette so you can relax. Your Oslos look great!!

Ugh. Musselburghs take me sooooo much longer to knit than anything else I have ever made. I can make a pair of socks or a sweater faster than a musselburgh. I have no idea why. They just don’t seem to want happen despite hours of never ending stockinette. That’s why they’re relegated to travel projects.

Interesting. I can make a Musselburgh in a week if I only work on that, but I’ll make a sweater take all year if I’m dicey. Socks always take 16 hours (8/sock).

I've knitted one Musselburgh and honestly I found it a slog. I can't imagine knocking out multiples!

I felt similarly by the end of my one and only!

I am just starting my first Musselburgh! I'm a bit intimidated so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

it’s a “just keep swimming” kind of enterprise. in the sense that you get started and have to pay attention for a bit and then knit in stockinette forever and wind up measuring it hundreds of times and still keep going because it still isn’t long enough.

make sure you picked yarn that you like working with and be careful to ensure your tension on the central tube (without increases/decreases) is consistent with your cast on. otherwise it’s a mostly good time!

i’m in awe of your fortitude, musselburgh queen! truly a feat to finish one and then want to start another!

I loved knitting the Oslo. They look so crisp to me! Yours look amazing!

yes exactly!
crisp is a perfect word, they’re so polished feeling while still being very simple to construct/wearable. plus, I love me some stockinette in the round!

Hey I'm doing the same thing! The adults get Oslos and the kiddos are getting different ones. Love the mohair combo on the coral one!

What weight is that yarn? Those look fantastic!

we’re working with a combo of dk weight yarn for the purple tonals and the yellow and black. the other two are fingering held with lace, though the orange mohair is MUCH thicker/the hat is much more dense

Beautiful gifts. My son in law wants a black one. I’m not sure how easy it will be to do the joining of the brim in black yarn. 🥴

ooooo!!! I have a tip. use a high contrast waste yarn for a crochet cast on. you can then use another set of needles to pick up the cast on stitches one by one as you take off the waste yarn. I usually take a smaller set of needles and thread the stitches on while they’re still on the waste yarn and then take the waste yarn off at the end. it is VERY satisfying.

These look great! Makes me want to knit one, too. If I’m not mistaken, these knit a bit quicker than a Musselburgh?

so much quicker!
I love a musselburgh hat but it’s the equivalent of knitting two beanies in one that gives you one reversible double layered hat with a quadruple layered brim. it feels like it’s about 1/3 more work than the oslo.

I also prefer that the oslo is a single layer hat with a triple layered brim. it’s warm over the ears without feeling too heavy.

That black and yellow striped yarn is super cool

it’s possibly my favorite yarn I have ever knitted up. I am now dead set on making a sweater.

This is going to be my next project, however I'm having difficulty with magic loop. Somehow I get a loose strand where the cable divides the two halves. 😅 I'm wondering if traveling loop or don's would work better for me. Yours look really cool! Great job!

I recommend using a 16in needle and there’s no magic looping required. when I get down to the decreases, I usually use two sets of circular needles with half of the stitches on each!

Thanks! Will do it like that. I've knitted beanies before but totally forgot how. 😁

Oh this is a genius way to avoid finicky DPNs, I’m stealing this for my next hat project

1

u/PersimmonReal42069 6h ago

I simply do not fuck with dpn’s! one of my many toxic traits lol. I will always choose to use a 9in needle for socks and 16in for hats. sometimes I will magic loop the smallest circumference bits but I have found using two circular needles to be the least fiddly!

Try double circular needles. I never go back to magic loop anymore.
And I’ve never tried DPNs

Love this stuffs, dreaming to have this collection

I'm so happy to read this! The Oslo hat is my next project, so I've got everything but the right circular needles in 3mm and my friends head circumference, but I'm hoping to swing it with DPNs an strick a measurement out of my friend tomorrow!
