Discussion European Citizens' Initiative

https://eci.ec.europa.eu/066/public/#/screen/home

hello i apologize if this seem like out of nowhere in advance, but i think you may want to know this

there is a leaked legislation about the EU trying to pass the "EU kids act" which according to the [stop killing games video] the [document] mentioned which also appears on the description mentions "operating systems" several times which it could include Linux distributions and i think that might be a problem if true because the regulation seem quite extreme.

so im sharing it here because there is this petition for people on the EU which is about making it respect privacy among other things

the deadline is 25-Aug-2027 so there is still time

again i apologize and i don't want to cause problems i thought you would like to know this

I'm getting really tired of the commission just doing what it wants in defiance of courts and the parliament itself. They have gone rogue in so many things now to the point even the EU court itself said what they were doing was against the statutes of the EU, yet they continue anyways. How is this a representative democracy when they are so far removed from any election and we seemingly have no power to tell them to stop.

The problem is that there is an imperfect separation of powers. See what happened with Chat Control, or other software-related bits in the past. The EU parliament isn't a real legislative organ.

Where are all grifters and the trolls who are cheering the EU in

every post and channel the EU to "Come and save us" every time the transgressions of Big Tech are highlighted?

  Why are these hypocrites silent?

Just like with the chat control, the EU secretly giving AI

companies more leeway to spy on European citizens, draconian copyright laws and so on.

Sadly I am from India so I cannot sign the initiative, but I have shared it with my friends who live in EU countries.

I really hope this gets a lot of traction like Stop Killing Games. I'm glad that people are waking up and trying to stop this shit.

Poorer members of the EU are doomed to live in servitude of Brussels and their corrupt ways. We hate them as much as you do but we know that we can’t criticise them too much because they have leverage and we have none.

They showered our country with money in exchange for loyal servitude. The politicians shaped the country with pre-determined policies so that every project depends on the constant flow of EU money. The flow stops, and our infrastructure collapses. When we entered, we became their bitch.

And to believe that so many people on Reddit and social media still champion the EU after all they have done, it's absolutely ridiculous.

All governments and corporations are evil bar none, never forget that.

The EU is really good at propaganda

It definitely is, including it's shocktroopers and the propagandists on Reddit and other social media platforms.

All governments and corporations are evil bar none, never forget that.

Anarchy doesn't work tho, so with all those three out of the picture, there's nothing left.

I'm not a big fan of the government (no pun intended), it's just that it seems there's no other way.

You are repeating said propaganda right now. "EU sucks but its better than the alternatives". They also often point to america and say "at least we are not america!"

It's not propaganda if it's based on provable facts.

Anarchy doesn't work on this scale, and you want to keep the scale, so you gotta chose from the other two, and I guess you don't want to live under corporate control.

Though I admit I mostly want understanding, respect and tolerance towards the EU from everyone including you, just got this idea you can get it intellectually. It's not late to stop speaking bullshit and have a true sense of reality: Chat Control is not proof the EU is 100% shit nor that it lies.

declaring something a fact does not make it one

So a random study on life satisfaction of people living in the EU, and a random, highly biased opinion piece. Those are your "proven facts"? Throwing an opinion piece as objective proof of something is absurd. Throwing out a random statistic without any statement is intellectually empty, too.

Not opinionated, but that's besides the point. It's just the tip of the iceberg of proofs, something to show off, I don't believe I could have convinced you anyways, plus argument over philosophy is for more sophisticated platforms than Reddit of all places.

The EU has excellent legislations about consumer rights, environmental protection, equality and egalitarianism, wealth distribution, international relations, just to name a few. Those alone are icebergs on their own. That would have been my core message.

Accusing them of all this being propaganda, and comndeming everyone agreeing is both disingenuous and disrespectful towards all parties involved. Chat Control is an anomaly in the system caused by corporate overreach - corporations from the neoliberal hell that is the United States.

I'd go as far as claiming the EU leadership doesn't want control, its democratic institution system is vast and largely prevents the setup of any 1984-style surveillance state people are scared about; but of course being skeptical of politicians myself, I cannot fully ascertain there's is a political anywhere in the world who wouldn't enjoy control.

Also, propaganda does not have to be fabricated. You can make a statement that is correct but is still propagandistic.

u/franky_reboot 16h ago

But then it's not morally wrong, so you only call it out because you don't like the EU.

Which is problematic.

Theres a lot of misinformation surrounding The EU Kids act, and a lot of the claims in Stop Killing Games videos are made up. Notice that in the video, they refuse to actually read through any of the legislation but just give a list of “what it will probably do”. For example the “private servers will be illegal” claim is just… not true.

I’m in a conflicting position because i’d usually agree with stances like this, but if there was as much truth to what they were saying, why would they refuse to explain anything and straight up lie about the contents of the legislation?

Operating Systems are mentioned mostly in the context of age signals. In other words, if the OS has data showing that the user is (or probably is) a minor / adult, it should be able to pass that information on to any services instead of requiring the user the have ID handled by another service.

If it was a hit on Linux, then why are more and more EU countries going to the penguin and not staying with Windows or Mac? Insofar of what I've read (both this, the DMA and the AI Act, both related to this), the Linux and BSD families would be exempted as per Chapter 1, Article 2, point 4d) of the proposal, so long as they aren't AI-heavy or AI-produced (looking at you Omarchy).

Plus, it's not leaked or anything, it's a proposal and thus it can (and will) be changed (either before or after like it happened with the other two) or even dropped if enough hubbub happens... just like with Chat Control 1 and 2, I know very well that some political families (mainly the liberals, greens and a good part of the right-wing outside of the EPP) will be against it, which will make a bit more complicated to go through since nearly all groups are also represented in the European Council.

It’s Kinda Linux’s fault here
