recent thrift
my current setup :))
Have wanted the original colorway supaboy for a while now, and a few weeks back I stumbled upon this at a local thrift for 60 bucks!
Supa happy with the purchase as it has gotten me playing again… starting with Soulblazer!

That is certainly an awesome find. We only have a couple of these left floating around the office. We have made some good improvements to this over the years.

I nearly grabbed one of those, but the SNES mini came out around the time I was gonna and went with that! How is it? Does it feel good to play or kinda cheap? Always wanted to try one. A handheld snes was my dream as a kid lol
Edit: what I meant was I decided to spend the money on the mini, wasn’t comparing like they’re the same kinda thing :)

I'm overall pretty pleased! In terms of quality, it's pretty mid-tier, being neither the cheapest nor most stout of things. Probably closer to 'cheap' on a sliding scale. The speakers on these are supposed to be crud, but evidently I lucked out as mine are decent enough :)

Awesome!! I always thought they looked and felt kinda cheap just checking one out, but never played it. Glad the speakers sound better than expected. I had to choose between the SNES mini and that at the time. Went with the mini as they were limited, didn’t find out about them until well after release, but a fella who bought 2 (one to mod one to keep away) sold it to me at retail which was great. Last year I then found a 2nd, no box but like new, 5 bucks at a garage sale :). So now I keep my boxed one nice nice and the 5 buck one I’m less hesitant to bring around/use

Wahh that is crazy!! I’d say you probably won out all things considered. I’d liken the supaboy’s quality to that of an aftermarket snes controller. Wouldn’t wanna drop it, but feel fine tossing it loose in a backpack! As for your second mini, I’ve got a crisp Hamilton ready to go if you’d like to double yer money 👀

I’d love to help ya! But for now I’m gonna hang on to the little mf’r lol. If I ever consider partying ways I’ll remember this comment!
SNES controllers are strong. I don’t have a temper, never been one to abuse controllers or systems quite the opposite. During 2020 lockdown though…I tackled and defeated some very difficult games and challenges, and that controller was swung around like a chain mace and bounced off the coffee table a few times. No harm done lol. A 64 controller woulda exploded2

Nice find! Always wanted one of those. Specifically the super Famicom one.

Oh me too! My flash cart was ready for that pairing but it wasn’t meant to be :(

Man, I so crave to replay Soul Blazer. I got to play it for the first time on my hacked Vita a couple years ago, and I completed it at the beginning of this year on my Retroid Pocket Classic. Now it's one of my most memorable retro games.
I wouldn't maybe call it the favorite one, but it surely grabbed me and has so many great ideas, from level design to story to mechanics, and the atmosphere, weird, celestial, fantastical, even phantasmagorical sometimes. One of the cherished experiences for me.
I intend to play the other Quintet games, but haven't yet.
Happy gaming!

I am mostly thru it and my experience has been similar! It is a magical little game that I am so happy to have stumbled across!

How is that screen and is it comfortable to hold?
1
u/tsantangelo 2d ago
The screen does strike me as a tad small, but is pretty good quality I'd say!
I find it comfortable to play for a few hours, though I'll add that I am kind of a luddite. I don't have too much experience outside of standard snes controllers to compare it to. Mindfield87 had a similar question below so you might find more info if you read my reply to them. Happy gamin!

I was eyeballing one of those on Amazon. Like is it as heavy as a Switch?

Kinda bulky and limited for the price if you ask me. Not sure about the weight.
If you want something similar in form factor to the switch, but a bit smaller. I highly recommend the Anbernic RG 476H. It comes ready to emulate anything up to PS2/Gamecube games (including NES/SNES/GBA/N64/SEGA), and it natively runs Android so you can play games from the google play store, stream videos, listen to music etc. The build quality is on par with the switch and it's a lot more powerful than the supaboy in terms of CPU/GPU/RAM.

Ah ok thanks. I think I’ll just stick to playing snes on tv with my x5

Not as heavy as the switch, definitely cheaper feeling, and, like the other user said, pretty bare bones!

This thing has always fascinated me but the highly mixed reviews have always spooked me off buying one.

If you look for reasons to be happy, they are there, as is the opposite. I like mine a lot.
