Question / Problem Thinkpad bricked after fwupdmgr update

Hi everyone! I use a t14 gen1 with no screen on (it broke) as a minecraft server (I am on Debian 13). Yesterday I was prompted to update some firmware by using fwupdmgr. I ran the commands (get-updates & update) then I went to sleep. In the morning, I couldn't log back in the computer and when I tried to forcefully turn it off and on again it made weird small but regular beeps as if there was a critical error. Anyway I thought i'd come here ! Thank you in advance :)

what is the beep pattern? here's what i can find:

  • one short, one long - CPU error
  • three short - memory test failed (you should run memtest)
  • four short - gpu/video failure
  • continuous beeping - power-rail/voltage issue
  • five short + pause - boot manager error

are you able to get into the bios at all?

It's a continuous beeping, so i guess it's a voltage issue, but i'm powering it with the stock charger and it didn't have any problem at all before the update. and no I cannot get into the BIOS

have you tried using the tiny reset hole on the bottom of the case? press and hold for 15 seconds. this will reset the embedded controller and force a new hardware poll.

OKAY I connected it to a screen, then let it cry all its beeps out. After it did some bios self healing things, i am now here. I notice it's stuck to the bluetooth, maybe it's because the bluetooth antenna got munched when the computer broke?

hi yes! so turns out my fwupdmgr was borked so i had to install using the lenovo iso, and change my grub config to reboot in efi to prevent it from blocking when restarting

Sorry can’t really help you out, and I don’t know about update, but I know several ThinkCentre devices can’t be updated if there’s no screen attached. Don’t ask how I found out.
