HOWTO: Call and hide panel's like menus via keyboard shortcuts.

5 Upvotes

panelhide.sh

IMPORTANT:

Find the panel you want to hide and unhide with your keyboard by the number in panel preferences menu. For eg: panel-1

Change the number in the script provided below:

For eg: "panel-2" , in the script below, becomes panel-1(replace it in all the three lines it is mentioned)

  1. Copy paste this script into your text editor and SAVE THE FILE in the directory of your choice as panelhide.sh

  2. open terminal CD to to the DIR and chmod +x panelhide.sh

  3. Now open xfce4-keyboard-settings app by pressing Alt+F2 or typing it in your terminal> Go to Applications Shortcuts> Add a shortcut from the bottom menu> Add the panelhide.sh in the command field. > Add the non-conflicting shortcut of your choosing and your're done.

  4. control delay of panel hiding animation to speed up the process add this code into your

~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

/**this goes into your gtk.css***/
#XfcePanelWindow {
    -XfcePanelWindow-popup-delay: 0;
    -XfcePanelWindow-popdown-delay: 0;
}

panelhide.sh

#!/bin/bash
val=$(xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -p /panels/panel-2/autohide-behavior)
if [ "$val" -eq 1 ]; then
    xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -p /panels/panel-2/autohide-behavior -s 2
else
    xfconf-query -c xfce4-panel -p /panels/panel-2/autohide-behavior -s 1

Proper MS Explorer-like alternative to Thunar without installing tons of dependencies?

2 Upvotes

Lately the more I use Thunar, the more I find it rather limited...

- no way to have tree view and shortcuts together
- no way to add extra columns for audio/video files
- file rename feature opens a friggin window instead of being inline

...and a lot more I'm yet to find lacking, I'm afraid.

Given the fact, what alternative would you suggest me that works just the way MS explorer does, sort of, which wouldn't require installing shitton of dependencies to work?

Only thing I tried so far is Cinnamon's Nemo - works but haven't tested much. PCManFM haven't tried. Dolphin works as well except it comes with ~10 dependency packages.

Question Using XFCE for gaming

17 Upvotes

What do I have to keep in mind if I wanna use XFCE on my gaming PC? I've heard that it's easier to use Wayland, but since XFCE uses X11 I wonder if there is anything I have to keep in mind before makignthe switch.

Support DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS not working under fedora44

0 Upvotes

Hi all,

I am running xfce 4 under tigervnc in fedora 44.

However, I am facing problems, like some commands failing.

Most notable building and running podman containers.

The problem seems to be the value of DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS:

In an xfce terminal, it has a value like:

DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/tmp/dbus-Af35mrSK9d,guid=796c97d78a1c5edfc164bbed6abd1771

This value causes errors in building containers.

However, if in the same terminal run `su - <username>`, the variable DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS gets a new value:

DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1002/bus

With this value, everything work fine (including containers).

How can I fix this, and xfce sets the correct value?

I see that the script that runs to start xfce is /usr/bin/startxfce4, which has the following code:

## Start a D-Bus session if there isn't one already.
if [ -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ]; then
XFCE4_SESSION_COMPOSITOR="dbus-run-session -- ${XFCE4_SESSION_COMPOSITOR}"

How do i change the language fully?

3 Upvotes

I am currently using Xfce4 on EndeavourOS. I have set the system language entirely to English, but there are a few places where the changes haven't taken effect. For example, on the panel clock, the numerical time displays in English, but the time-of-day indicators (morning, noon, afternoon, or night) appear in my locale's language. How do I fix the system so that it uses English exclusively?

Support Cursor slow down when V-Sync is on

1 Upvotes

(I'm on Linux Mint Xfce)

Alright so I've had this issue for ages now, but always just either powered through it or disabled V-Sync if given the option. Figured I might as well ask about it now.

If V-Sync is on in a program or game, the mouse cursor becomes a bit slower. Almost like some sort of 'mouse smoothing' was turned on. Some things have V-Sync forced on, and while this slow down isn't the end of the world, it is noticeable. Anyone have any clue why this happening and how I can stop it beyond just turning off V-Sync in these games/programs? It's kinda irking me now.

Question helped one old person to install Xubuntu and have some issues

hi! One old person, who ain't interested in computers, has Acer Chromebook 315. I finally installed a normal Linux on that, and I chose Xubuntu! Could you help me to solve these issues:

  1. how to move the taskbar down to the bottom? Just he doesn't like the default horizontal or on the left side;

  2. personally I use Kubuntu, and I use Discover to install and update apps. What is the analogy here, so, I can tell him where to update without the terminal?;

  3. he uses the numeric pad(I'll try to post that photo in the comments if I can), and he can use the delete, page up etc buttons, but he can't use the numbers. How to set up a hotkey combination to use as the "num lock"?;

  4. how to make the icons in the list of apps bigger? Just I found how to do it with the ones on the taskbar, but not on the list;

Installed Plank Reloaded and XFCE Panel is still installed

Playing around with Plank Reloaded on XFCE DE and MX Linux, you can install it using the MX Package Installer. I activated it and rebooted the machine. My main left monitor is a laptop, and the 2nd monitor is a monitor. The laptop is 1 (left), and the monitor is 2 (right).

I was pleasantly surprised that it installed Plank Reloaded on 1, and the original XFCE panel remained on 2 because that's where I put it.

I was expecting to remove the XFCE panel, but now it looks better with both, and Conky above my fastfect terminal. Sweet!

Finally customized my Xubuntu setup a bit.

What would you change next to make it look cleaner/more polished?

Especially interested in panel, terminal, icons, window effects, fonts, and overall consistency.

Suggestions welcome I’m still learning Linux customization.

App Launcher with subfolders, does it exist?

7 Upvotes

Its something I found existing only within 3rd party apps like Punchi Dock Remastered on latest Plasma release. For XFCE, however, such a thing doesn't really seem to exist outside of the Application Menu when using a custom config and that's hella confusing - stillI can't figure it out, even if using the XFCE wiki.

(Example of a Quick Launcher widget for Plasma 5)

P.S. Kinda figured out how the custom menu config works, so that's a start. Still if anyone knows a GUI way to manage this, it's appreciated. MenuLibre is way too fking basic...
