Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

SHARE Ika Android Emulator now supports Arch Linux

Ika is LineageOS 23.2 (Android 16) rebuilt as a desktop operating system running in a VM on Linux. The virtual machine manager is based on Google's Cuttlefish virtual Android device with CrosVM, as opposed to the more widely known QEMU. It began as a way to run Android on Apple Silicon hosts and support for x86-64 arrived later in development.

As of release 260930 there are prebuilt Arch Linux packages for x86_64, alongside Fedora 44 and Debian 13 / Ubuntu 26.04.

Features:

  • A resizable window that maintains DPI settings and stays pixel-perfect at any size
  • GPU acceleration with OpenGL ES and Vulkan
  • Windowed Apps: Run an Android app in its own standalone window on your desktop. Android apps show up in your desktop's app menu, grouped under "Android Apps (Ika)", and the list stays in sync as you install or remove apps.
  • Games start fullscreen with gamepad, keyboard and mouse passthrough as HID devices. For games that ignore the mouse, right-click the game's launcher icon and choose "Play with Touch Input" to simulate touch/tap events.

Install on Arch (x86_64)

The download is about 1.8 GB (201 MB app plus a 1.57 GB disk image). Reboot after installing: The packages add you to new groups and install udev rules and limits, so logging out isn't enough.

Build from source:

./ika-buildcreates Arch packages from source. 16 GB RAM minimum is required for a successful Android build. When building from source, you choose MindTheGapps, microG, or a fully de-Googled ROM. Plan on 300 GB of disk and 3 to 6+ hours for the initial Android build.

GitHub: https://github.com/DesktopECHO/ika

Ika is still a young project, so expect some rough edges, and game compatibility varies from title to title. Bug reports and feedback are welcome, especially from users on Arch-based distros.

SUPPORT I installed virt-manager and now Steam won't launch

Hi folks, desperately need some help here...

I followed this guide to install Virt-Manager: https://tanis.codes/posts/virt-manager-qemu-arch-linux/

Which caused this issue with Steam failing to launch: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/2112-4548-B98B-3A06

How can I either fix this or undo what broke it?

I am seriously getting fed up with different VM solutions breaking things when I try to use them.

Output when launching Steam from the console: https://pastebin.com/Dfe499vh

QUESTION Fcitx5 New Century Wubi, Wubi98, or Wubi86?

Recently I have been interested in the Wubi input method, and I have found out that the input method has 3 different versions, Wubi86, Wubi98, and New Century Wubi. I also have installed Fcitx5 on my computer and I wonder, what version of Wubi is used by Fcitx5?

SUPPORT | SOLVED Blender from the main repos doesn't work for quite some time now: missing abseil version

Hi!

solved: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/1wvzk1j/comment/pdgwnik/

I'm here to report a packaging issue, and ask about potential fixes to it. Some time ago I've noticed that Blender from the main repos was failing to start on my system due to an mismatched abseil-cpp version. I've shrugged it off as a problem related to *-testing repos I was using at the time and switched to AUR's blender-bin for the time being, which uses its own packaged dependencies. However, now that I needed the version that uses the same Python that's installed on the system, I decided to disable testing repos and try using the official package. However, it still doesn't work: the log below shows the error, the package versions, and the fact that I do, indeed, have testing disabled and all packages synced to their official stable versions. Username/hostname are changed just in case

Is the blender package just simply broken for now? Do I have any other options aside from manually compiling it if I want a version that uses Python 3.14 instead of 3.13?

Edit : Solved the problem was caused by resizing my Linux partition which caused some broken some time shift hardlinks to break which caused a kernel panic every time any service tried to access them . I booted into a live usb an mounted my Linux partition and ran e2fsck and deleted time shift snapshots and that fixed it

SUPPORT Takes 20+ seconds to log-in after experimenting with Docker and then removing it.

So it turns out the timing was pure coincidence. I changed my search terms to be specifically about KDE Plasma, and found some results that said the splashscreen is what actually causes the delay... I disabled that, and the login time is just a couple of seconds...I expect the entries in my pastebin are normal, I just hadn't looked before.

I will leave my original blurb in case it amuses any veterans.

-------------

Hi folks,

I tried to get winapps working so I could use Adobe CS programs, but I kept running into issues so I abandoned it and removed Docker.

I had Windows installed in the docker container and had placed and edited the config files, but I ran into an issue with xfreerdp3 where it could no longer connect to the VM even though I could still connect via the browser or with Remmina, after a reboot... I wasn't sure what I had done, so I attempted to remove everything to give myself a fighting chance if I wanted to try the process again from scratch.

Ever since then I have a 20+ second wait from the login screen to the desktop being displayed (KDE Plasma) whereas before it was only a second or two.

If I do systemd-analyze blame, I have between 100 and 150 entries which are some variation of "dev-disk-by\x2d ..."

seen here; https://pastebin.com/rcCtwAWq

I do have quite a few drives in this system, my WIndows install has four SSDs, two NVME and two SATA, and then I added a fifth SSD to try different LInux variants. But the other drives aren't mounted at login, I have to click on them to mount them.

Any ideas please?

Bear in mind when wording your replies that I am on day 2 of "Try Linux for a month" with a view to abandoning WIndows. I have plenty of professional experience with computers, but this is my first time touching LInux.... We always had "a guy" for that. 😂

This might not have been a day 2 activity, with hindsight...

SUPPORT How to stop the lebron james ps5 controller from acting like a mouse when the touchpad is used?

I remember editing udev rules to do this with a different controller, and had no issues, but this lebron james edition controller will not listen and im not entirely sure why, ive tried creating another udev rules file and im not entirely sure what to call it but something that has to do with the product and vendor id, below is the 2 files i created for this, along with its lsusb entry and evtest touchpad entry

the vendor id thing:
KERNEL=="uinput", MODE="0666"
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="054c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0ce6", MODE="0666"
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", KERNELS=="0003:054C:0CE6.*", MODE="0666"

touchpad rules:

not sure what else to put, let me know and ill happily provide any more information needed, the vendor id thing was basically copy and pasted aside from some small changes to the vendor id product id and bus number, from a file called "50-ds4drv.rules" which i faintly rememebr being related to my controller rules on the controller that worked with the rules, (from like november of 2025 so thats why my memory on this is a little foggy) that i searched up and saw results about it being related to that, aside from the glaring obvious sony vendor id and ds4 mention lol

I would like to know how to make the scrollock keyboard key turn on the keyboard backlight?
I didn’t found a solution in the Arch Wikis. Also I want to find solution that makes caps lock and num lock turn off the backlight.

I’m using KDE plasma Wayland. Everything is updated in latest version in Extra.

QUESTION keyboard backlight on asus tuf gaming a16 issue

I'm trying to find the root cause of a problem with the keyboard backlight on my laptop.

I've already created several posts about this issue on different forums and groups, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find a solution. I've tried various approaches, including linux-ogc (recommended for asus gaming laptop owners) and other suggested solutions, but nothing helped.

I eventually decided to completely reinstall the system and try the same procedure that helped me the previous time.

First, I installed Windows, performed all available updates, and installed Armoury Crate. The keyboard backlight was not working correctly even in Windows using the default settings, so I used Armoury Crate to configure the keyboard lighting.

After that, I reinstalled Arch Linux.

And surprisingly, the keyboard backlight is now working in Arch Linux.

This is why I'm making this post now, while everything is still working. I would like to find out what exactly is different this time compared to my previous installation.

Is there a way to check and document the current state of the system, for example:

  • which kernel modules are currently loaded,
  • which drivers are responsible for the keyboard and its backlight,
  • which devices/interfaces related to the keyboard are detected,
  • whether any kernel or bootloader parameters affect the backlight,
  • which ACPI interfaces or settings are currently being used,
  • whether Armoury Crate could have changed some hardware or firmware state,
  • whether there is a specific module, parameter, firmware setting, or configuration that is responsible for the backlight working now.

My main goal is to collect as much information as possible while the backlight is working, so that I can later compare it with the system state if the backlight stops working again.

I'm worried that at some point a package update, kernel update, or some other change could cause the keyboard backlight to stop working again. If that happens, I want to be able to identify the actual cause and restore the backlight without having to reinstall Windows every time.

Could someone please suggest which commands or diagnostic information I should collect right now, while the backlight is working, so that I can compare it later if the problem returns?

If there is a way to create some kind of "snapshot" of the current configuration related to ACPI, HID, ASUS/ROG hardware, keyboard drivers, kernel modules, etc., I would be happy to do that as well.

I'm hoping someone here can help me track down the actual cause of this problem. I've already gone through hundreds of posts and tried many different solutions, but so far nothing has worked.

This time, I'd really like to take advantage of the fact that the backlight is currently working and collect the necessary information before the problem happens again.

QUESTION Building AUR package on another machine and using the final .pkg.tar.zst file

A friend of mine uses Manjaro on his personal computer. To be more cautious when installing/updating the AUR packages that he uses, in addition to checking the PKGBUILD contents as best as he can, he basically runs another Manjaro instance on a remote VPS (same specs and update as the one on his personal computer), he builds the AUR package on that remote VPS first and then transfers the final .pkg.tar.zst file to his machine and uses that.

It's kind of like the OBS platform of Opensuse and he argues that malwares that get activated and run on build phase to steal various credentials (if he misses them when checking PKGBUILD), have no chance of getting anything valuable.

Putting aside the notion that Manjaro is not Arch, he prefers that disto because of its delayed update routine which makes it easier to keep both machines on the same dependency/package versions.

What you guys think about such a setup?

QUESTION Used "archinstall" for my first setup. Any tips for my first manual install?

Hello everyone! I have been using Arch Linux for a while. My first installation was performed with archinstall. Now I would like to try a manual install to learn how everything works inside.

For those who have performed a manual installation, what common beginner mistakes or important things should I watch out for? Any. Things you wish you had known before your first installation would be appreciated!

QUESTION Installing Arch Offline

Hypothetically speaking, suppose I install all the core packages of Arch Linux and store it in a local USB stick. I am trying to build an Arch system into a new machine (suppose a PC) using another USB with ArchISO. Can I insert the previous USB along the live ISO and install Arch without the internet connection?

SUPPORT oo7 + COSMIC/greetd: pam_oo7 tries to launch /usr/bin/oo7-daemon, but Arch installs it in /usr/lib What should I do?

DISCLAIMER: a LLM helped me write this because I'm no expert and couldn't possibly provide all these info on my own

I'm trying to set up oo7 as my Secret Service implementation on Arch Linux with COSMIC.

My environment:

  • COSMIC Wayland
  • greetd + cosmic-greeter
  • oo7 0.6.0-3 from the official Arch repositories
  • libsecret installed
  • PAM authentication through login

I followed the ArchWiki oo7 instructions and initially put the PAM entries in /etc/pam.d/greetd, but eventually discovered that my COSMIC Greeter configuration contains:

[general]
service = "login"

So I moved the PAM configuration to /etc/pam.d/login:

auth required pam_securetty.so
auth requisite pam_nologin.so
auth include system-local-login
auth optional pam_oo7.so
account include system-local-login
session include system-local-login
session optional pam_oo7.so
password include system-local-login

After rebooting, pam_oo7 is definitely being invoked during login. The journal shows:

greetd[1368]: Connecting to daemon socket at: /run/user/1000/oo7-pam.sock
greetd[1286]: Failed to send secret to oo7 daemon: Failed to connect to daemon socket: Child process failed with exit code 1

The interesting part is that the PAM module appears to try to start the daemon when the socket doesn't exist.

I inspected the installed pam_oo7.so and found these strings:

Socket not found, attempting to start daemon
Attempting to start oo7-daemon directly
/usr/bin/oo7-daemon
Started oo7-daemon with PID
Child process terminated abnormally

However, the installed package does not provide /usr/bin/oo7-daemon.

For example:

$ ls -l /usr/bin/oo7-daemon
ls: cannot access '/usr/bin/oo7-daemon': No such file or directory

But the package does provide:

/usr/lib/oo7-daemon
/usr/lib/security/pam_oo7.so

The systemd user service also points to the /usr/lib location:

ExecStart=/usr/lib/oo7-daemon

The service itself is currently disabled, as recommended for the PAM setup.

So as far as I can tell, the situation is:

pam_oo7
  ↓
/run/user/1000/oo7-pam.sock doesn't exist
  ↓
tries to start /usr/bin/oo7-daemon
  ↓
/usr/bin/oo7-daemon doesn't exist
  ↓
child exits with code 1
  ↓
PAM can't connect to the socket

I'm not going to create a symlink or otherwise modify the installation yet, because I don't know whether this is:

  1. a packaging bug in oo7 0.6.0-3,
  2. an intentional difference between the PAM module and the packaged daemon location,
  3. something specific to how pam_oo7 is expected to be configured with greetd/COSMIC, or
  4. something I'm misunderstanding about the intended daemon startup mechanism.

What is the correct way to handle this? Should pam_oo7 be starting /usr/lib/oo7-daemon somehow, should the daemon be started separately, or is the /usr/bin/oo7-daemon path in pam_oo7.so indicative of a package/version bug?

I'd appreciate guidance before I make any workaround changes.

QUESTION WinLinux or LinuxWin

Hello friends, here is the question: How is it furned to be that Linux cannot boot without a Microsoft FAT32 partition? How do you solve this problem? Can a serious server-grade system like Linux really not boot without a Microsoft FAT32 partition? Even if I move `/boot` to Ext4 or Btrfs, I still have to keep `/boot/efi` as FAT32, because otherwise the system won't boot. wtf?

NOTEWORTHY TIL about cockpit-pacman

I installed cockpit-packagekit a long time ago, but it has been a while since I really used it. While uninstalling it, I noticed a new package in the extra repo: [cockpit-pacman](https://github.com/pfeifferj/cockpit-pacman).

I gave it a try and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised: - WebUI to update packages, restart affected systemd units, schedule updates, cleanup cache, downgrade packages and manage mirrors and repos - Dismissable list of .pacnew files that I never reviewed before - Graph and list of installed packages, dependencies and dependants - Full history of package installation, update and removal

It's based on the new [alpm.rs](https://github.com/archlinux/alpm.rs) library. I think it makes some things easier, especially for newcomers!

SUPPORT Need help. Cinnamon is broken after system update.

I don't know what to do. I've searched everywhere.

Here's the problem. The taskbar is gone and I cannot access any menus or settings. The wallpaper is black ( when I initially login and it's, say, loading, the wallpaper is there, but as soon as the desktop is ready the wallpaper is gone). Basically the only thing I see in the desktop is the stuff I have on the desktop, shortcuts, files, etc.

I can visit the folders and explore the system normally. However, the windows have no toolbars. I cannot close, minimize, or resize them. I can move them around. Programs seem to be working, at least firefox does (I access it by right clicking desktop, opening terminal, and launching from there.), but when I open it, there's a gap at the bottom, probably where the taskbar should be but I think larger. Whatever, I can show pictures if you want. Windows key/super key doesn't work. Some default shortcuts for manipulating windows don't work. For these, I'm not sure if the shortcut settings have been changed since I don't remember the last time I touched them.

This brings me to an important point. I have not updated the system in 2/3 years. Yesterday was my first time. My laptop was broken for a lot of this time and I had real life to deal with. I was thinking maybe it was a hardware issue, since the gpu is still broken, but I tested and everything was working before the system update. So it doesn't seem like that's the issue?

As for what I did during the update. The update wouldn't initially go through because some packages were causing dependency issues (libcap/libpcap) so I uninstalled those, as well as wine. I think this didn't do anything bad? There was another problem with linux-firmware-nvidea so I fixed it as stated in the instructions https://archlinux.org/news/linux-firmware-2025061312fe085f-5-upgrade-requires-manual-intervention/ and I'm pretty sure it was after this that it broke. I went through with the system update after that. Also, I had to clear all cache due to low disk space (dumb, I know, but I just wanted to get done with the update).

So far, I have tried reinstalling all drivers, linux-firmware, reinstalled cinnamon, resetting cinnamon config, reinstalled lightdm, read the wiki during all these steps, I searched for this problem online, nobody has it quite like this. Worst part is I don't even know how I should start looking for a solution to this.

QUESTION KDE or XFCE?

I have been using KDE for a long time, and while I enjoyed it, it felt pretty heavy (considering my laptop is not so good in terms of quality by today's standards) and I have considered to switch to XFCE after I heard that it's lightweight and fast. However, which one is better depends on what the user uses their computer for (in other words, subjective) and I mainly use my computer to watch Youtube videos, do some web browsing, with future plans to do video editing on the computer. (sorry if the flair is wrong, couldn't decide between support and discussion)

QUESTION Why are there no virtual environment managers for arch linux?

Sometimes I need an old version of a package, I thought it would be great if I could create a virtual environment where I can use an older version of a package similar to python environments.

I was thinking of making one, so I was wondering if there is some glaring reason why nobody has created one yet.

I’m a noob. I just installed arch for the first time using archinstall and ticked the box to install dm-greeter as my greeter. Upon trying to boot the OS for the first time I was presented with this error.

What are the possible causes? Do I have options other than reinstall?

QUESTION Making Arch immutable

I'm trying to install Arch (on a VM) as an immutable system with atomic updates, mostly as a challenge to myself and because it would be cool.

I plan to use a similar setup to what snapper does: to have BTRFS as my root filesystem, with snapshot subvolumes under /.snapshots/, and separate subvolumes for parts of the filesystem that shouldn't be in the snapshots. Then I want to have for each snapshot a boot entry that mounts it read-only as the root (and mounts the other subvolumes in their appropriate places), so that I could be sure it is not changed outside of atomic updates, where I create a new snapshot from the current one, mount it read-write in a special place, chroot into it and perform the update.

But there are two directories I'm not sure how to handle: /etc and /var.

/etc should obviously be part of the snapshots, and I'm also happy to have it read-only so changes to core configuration would have to happen between snapshots, but I have read that some programs use it to store runtime data. Are those a few cases I can try to work around, or do I need a more systematic solution? And if so, what could be the solution?

/var, on the other hand, has to be writable, so I originally planned to make it its own subvolume (as openSUSE does). But then I read that it contains data that needs to be synchronized with the packages installed (like /var/lib/pacman), and that only certain subdirectories like /var/log should be their own subvolumes. But if so, how can I make it writable? Is there a good approach to this problem?

And on the hall, do you think my idea is reasonable, or is it too much even for super-duper-to-it-yourself-customizable Arch? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Thank you all in advance!

SUPPORT Boot time optimization support

Hi there I have been trying for a while now to speed up my system boot time. Currently I average around 35 seconds to boot my system. I am wondering if there is anything more I can do to speed up the boot process or have I hit a limit?

What I have done:
Enabling quiet mode in the kernel command command line (this actually saved me about 4 seconds on average),

remove unnecessary file system mounts from my fstab file (seemingly no effect on boot time),

mess around with kernel command line options and removed unused mkinitcpio modules stated by the arch wiki on boot time optimization (seemingly no effect on boot time).

Enable fast boot and in my uefi firmware settings (this did speed up the firmware stage but it slowed down the loader stage instead meaning it had very little if no impact on overall boot time).

Disabling / masking unused services, I think this has saved me a total of 1 second or so, not much effect but it did do something.

System setup:
I am using a UKI together with secure boot and TPM disc encryption. My bootloader of choice is limine and for my boot performance tests I have set it to timeout instantly and boot the first option as fast as possible (meaning the loader time is not from waiting for the timeout). It is slightly customised but nothing that I have done gave noticeable slowdowns.

I have also noticed that when I enabled fast boot in my eufi it was stuck a lot longer on the UKI boot splash which might be where the extra loader time is spent? But I am not sure.

Here are some outputs of the boot (all are from the same boot)

systemd-analyze blame: https://pastebin.com/CZzyX325
systemd-analuze plot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EeMqMATWSIw1w7-KOeYgi_wqLbcX20Pl/view?usp=sharing
systemd-analyze critical-chain: https://pastebin.com/av8UMMFt

systemd-analyze: Startup finished in 6.239s (firmware) + 11.456s (loader) + 3.109s (kernel) + 5.983s (initrd) + 9.931s (userspace) = 36.720s

graphical.target reached after 9.931s in userspace.

[IMPORTANT EDIT!!]
Thanks to the help of everyone here and some research I have made a few discoveries that might be usefull to know.

So first of all I did manage to reduce the boot times a tiny bit by changing from ultra fast boot to just fast boot (thanks gigabyte..).

Secondly. I think its kinda hopeless to optimise or try and speed up the firmware and loader times. They likely come from my motherboard being not to great. I have looked it up and other people have reported my mother board model having less than desirable boot times so its likely a hardware issue. I have also dig through my firmware settings A TON and found no setting that can help me (my motherboard is kinda limiting compared to the stuff I have heard some of you be able to do). For those wondering my exact motherboard model is X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI.

Thirdly. I did find a way to drastically improve boot times. If I unplug all usb devices except my keyboard boot the firmware times decrease. But strangely my initrd time also goes down drastically. It seems my firmware naively loads all usb devices which for some reason bloats up the initrd load time (that explains the near 100 device calls in the graph). This together has a big impact on my boot times. The ideal solution would be to prevent it from loading at boot and load it once the graphical target is reached, kinda like unplugging it and then plugging it back in at the login screen but on a software level. But idk how possible that is. And my firmware seems to lack settings to control usb ports and other devices, meaning its forced to load everything. I might see if I can replace my firmware with something but right now its just an idea and I got no idea if it will work. Time to research I guess.

And finally. Despite my long time in firmware I also wanna ask specifically about the user space time. I have seen some get a userspace load time of 3 seconds (which is about 3 times faster than me). I wonder if there is anything I can do to specifically speed that up as that might be worth putting effort into as the firmware and loader side of things appear to be capped by my hardware.

Wow this became super long. Sorry about the INSANE read.
