Discussion Remember these?
I was clearing out the loft and came across an old PC. I turned it on and found these on there. Zsnes and gens, I used to use these for snes and mega drive emulation 20 years ago.

To who ever created that beautiful program, thank you. Gave a broke kid access to games I never knew existed back then. Gave me my love for jrps.

He gave a rare interview sort of recently about building it link

Clicking that and immediately getting hit with Zophar's Domain was the best hit of nostalgia dopamine I could've hoped for today, thank you so much for sharing this

ZSNES got recently a modern upgrade so it now supports modern OSs and utilises GPU rendering.

Absolutely. My childhood was real SNES with real games. But my second childhood was ZSNES with ALL the games.

u/HairAffectionate277 3d ago
I was a mega drive person myself, my friend has a snes so played both consoles loads when I was a child. Zsnes has all the games as does gens. I'll be keeping the PC out to play through some classics.

ZSnes was absolutely incredible. It brought smooth snes emulation to so many platforms.

ZSNES, the very first snes emulator I discovered in 1998, triggering in me the magic of console emulation.
Of course I remember.

These along with mame. The hours me and my friends spent playing wrestlefest on mame. Good times.

Isn't the dev of ZSnes working on the emulator again?
6
u/Harry_Flowers 2d ago
Yea, Super ZSnes is supposedly being rebuilt from the ground up to support some more advanced rendering features.

u/HairAffectionate277 2d ago
I've read in the comments that they are. I'll definitely get it, zsnes was amazing.

ZSKnight, the creator of ZSNES, just did an interview with Zophar of Zophar'sDomain. Which is a hell of a sentence if you were into SNES emulation in the late nineties.

u/OcularVernacular 3d ago
I loved that era. I never actually owned a snes but I was lucky enough to own a pc from a young age. So I experienced FF6, A Link to the past, chrono trigger and more all on zsnes.

u/FallenAzraelx 3d ago
Only way I was able to play Terranigma, Seiken Densetsu 3, E.V.O. and Lufia. Man am I greatful for that lil piece of software!

Zsnes was the shit back in the day, that emulator could run even in the most shittiest PC's at my school.
It's the emulator equivalent of a Nokia 3310, old sturdy and reliable, it never lagged, it never crashed, software at its finest.

Do people not use these anymore? I’m being serious, I still have it and boot it up once in a while, what do people use now

Never stopped using zsnes. Should I be using something else?

u/HairAffectionate277 2d ago
My understanding is that they have brought out super zsnes. I need to check it out.

I could never get Zsnes to work just right when I was a kid. I always used SNES9x.

Ah ZSnes, so many good memories. When I first learnt about emulation I was so happy because I was pining after zelda a link to the past. I had sold my snes to pay for an n64 and missed it since. Took me a bit to learn how to run games/roms and what it could do but I smiled like crazy playing zelda3 again I damn near completed it all that day. ZSnes was my gateway to emulation.

u/pilot_pen01 2d ago
The escape key to bring up the menu was ingenious and convenient rather than a function key. Unfortunately, some other emulators used the escape key to exit the program.

u/XOmniverse 2d ago
I remember when ZSNES didn't support transparency effects and it broke some games until you disabled some rendering layers.

u/tepig099 1d ago
Good times. This emulator brought joy and frustrations, but it also helped us solve the issues through pressing some number keys, lol.

u/Aspiring-Old-Guy 2d ago
Apparently a couple months ago there was an interview on Zophar's Domain with the Creator of ZSNES, and they were inspired by the outpouring that they wanted to make an updated version. IIRC

u/MoonriseNebula 2d ago
ZSNES introduced me to emu's and roms, which led to fan translations of Japenese games, like Dragon Quest V. Been a fan of the DQ series ever since.

u/deanrazor 2d ago
I used zsnes for like a year between 2016 and 2017 played so many games I had as a kid and many more cause download unzip play.

u/EddyDisaster 2d ago
I remember I bought a USB adapter for the SNES controller to my PC... Mega Man X with zsnes was my go-to everyday after school

First emulator I ever used. Played Kirby Superstar, Final Fantasy IV, A Link to the Past and several others through this program. Fun times.

I used this pause the gameplay on Vegas Stakes, and I reached a million bucks to finish the game via roulette 🃏🎰🎲

The first emulator I ever used. Didn't the original devs reboot znes just recently?

I had a CD-ROM that came with several emulators and ROMs that you could play directly from the CD on your PC. It came with ZSNES, so it brings back a lot of nostalgia for me.

I used SNES9x on my dad’s Mac instead, I believe ZSNES was Windows-only at the time. Super happy for everyone, though. It’s the fact we got access to all the games that matters.

Just a few months ago I did the same with my G4 PowerMac - A friend gave me an old Sony monitor and I needed to test it before I started looking into HDMI-VGA adapters. 2005 was the last time the old Mac booted and it was like stepping back in time 20 years. I only had a mouse and keyboard connected so I “tested” it with Warcraft III but I did scroll through my little rom library for its NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators.
After getting 8BitDo’s NES style keyboard and mouse for my SteamDeck, I had the idea to use the old monitor for RetroDeck and while its image looks good, it’s doing a blip/zap thing every handful of minutes. Also, the docked Deck doesn’t support a compatible resolution so it isn’t as simple as running an adapter cable to the monitor and likely needs a pricey DAC …still all worth doing someday but now at the bottom of my projects list.

Ohhhhhhhhhh Zsnes!!! It was the only emulators that I used for the SNES years ago. I was quite attached to the SNES because it was my first official console so I used Zsnes a lot. I also remember searching for the IPS fan translation of the games ( playing tales of phantasia for the SNES English patched was nice, especially because there was during the demo?intro? A line of one of the character read in Japanese).

God I haven't played mine in 20 years. Some great times were had with these emulators.

u/possitive-ion 2d ago
Up until about 2 years ago, I still used ZSNES. I loved the UI. Now I use Retroarch because it just keeps everything organized in one area.

u/Unconscious-angel 2d ago
Weirdly you have the exact same monitor I have! and I also have this installed on my Windows 98! what a coincidence

Yeah. The first game I ever played on their was Earthbound. I absolutely loved it and it's still one of my favourite games.

Ah, the 90's. I remember not having internet yet and bypassing the security on the library computers to download roms onto floppy disks, if they would fit 😆

zsnes recently came back, the old authors revived it some months ago. Gens I never did care for, I got more into using steve snakes kega fusion as it was a solid quality catch all for 8/16bit stuff.

It was soo hard to get a proper controller back then on basically zero budget.

u/Thechuzzler 2d ago
That zsnes file directory giving me flashbacks lol. I swear it took me like 4 hours as a kid trying to figure out how to navigate to where I put the rom. Fun times.

ZSNES and NESticle were the shit. I don't think I ever had trouble with them.

Being from Europe ZSNES is how I played the likes of FFIV-VI and Chrono Trigger for the first time as well as a fan translation of secret of mana 2
1
u/flowersforaerith 2d ago
The first way I ever experienced Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, and the way I killed many an hour playing Zombies Ate My Neighbours with my brothers! ZSNES and ePSXe were fantastic and really opened my eyes early to the joys of emulation!

u/Doro_Gurl 3d ago edited 2d ago
ZSNES was extremely well programmed. Works on every version of Winows past a certain date on any machine. And it was fast!
Real shame it hasn't updated and can now be an entry point for malwarw.

I think it's prudent we discuss the HUGE vulnerabilities with older versions of this program.
For real, this scene was my life and this emulator is God tier, but we need to remember it's flaws and that one of them was glaring

I've never been dumb enough to run any pirate media on a network connected machine so shrugs let the virus fester. They're all lame ID theft tools anymore anyway not even interesting

ZSNES was how I first played Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid... But the game I played the most was Super Bomberman 2 with my brother, playing against each other, both using one side of the keyboard. The memories!
