Discussion Trying to Decide what my first purchase should be!

For reference I just found my SNES that I played when I was a kid. My uncle had left the console when he went to college and whenever my parents had a date night or work they would drop my brother and I off at my grandparents and we would have a blast on it. I am a lot older now and enjoy a lot of RPG’s and Adventure games. I am trying to make a decision between three games Legend of Zelda A Link to the past, Chrono Trigger, or FF3. I realize some of these games are different and have different price points as-well. But all three have really interested me so I just wanted some help narrowing it down.

Zelda is not an RPG so puzzles, action, Zelda vibes everywhere. Incredible game. Chrono and FF are. Can't comment on FF, but I'd say is the most "conventional" in terms or game mechanics. Chrono sits somewhere in between. Any would make an excellent choice.

All 3 are the perfect choices for you. Chrono Trigger and FF3 are more RPG and Zelda is more adventure. Personally I’d say either Link to the Past or Chrono Trigger first and second, then FF3

I think this is where I was starting to lean towards now I’m trying to decide if I want more puzzle/ dungeon or more standard rpg

Like someone else said FF3 is a bit longer. It also has random battles which can get tedious. CT has mostly planned battles and you don’t really need to grind much to advance. I am a bit biased though because IMO Chrono Trigger is a perfect game in every way.

Just to add something, you can always check romhacking.net and find some mods that may interest you. I just begun playing FFVI and there's a lot of mods that fix errors and things like that.👍🏻

Zelda is the shortest, then chrono, ff3 is the longest.

LTTP. There are better translations for Chrono Trigger and FFVI these days but LTTP is the gold standard as is (and significantly cheaper)

Better is debatable. There are some improvements but I think the original SNES translation has way more charm.

The charm of being rushed to get it translated in under a month and also censor religious references. The translator even said he wishes he had more time and admitted he had to straight up make things up in the script because he didn't have time to figure out what the original meant. It was an absolute mess of a translation.

Chrono is the best if you can get a copy, though Steam is more affordable.

I rank Mario RPG over snes FF games. FF has better stories, but the random encounter systems are just bad.

DS chrono trigger is better and US FF3(VI) is censored and badly translated so I would pass on getting them unless you're specifically collecting them. A Link to the Past is still amazing though.

SNES is a console most famous for RPGs. If you are/will be a true collector then it's Chrono Trigger or FF3 or Super Mario RPG. The price of most popular SNES games got very dumb to me so I evolved to flashcart.

Not everyone classifies A Link to the Past as one but it's affordable and amazing. You can find some lists of great yet affordable games on this sub if that's your goal. Was mine until I think I collected what I wanted. I imported some Super Famicom games. Mega Man X2 and X3 among other titles are very playable without knowing Japanese.

Can't really go wrong with any of them, but my vote is for LTTP.

You didn't list it, but don't miss out on Super Metroid. One of the best 2d games of all time and still holds up to this day.

That was honestly one of my options as well because I really enjoyed Metroid Dread but narrowing it down has been hard

You can't go wrong with any of the ones you mentioned either. Just make sure to play super metroid at some point. It would be a crime to have an snes and miss it.

Thank you will absolutely do

Considering it's the longest starting with ff3 might have been a good thing.

Super metroid is also a solid option. The SNES in particular is tough to narrow down what to play on it because it is loaded with so many great options.

Super metroid all day.

A 900 in 1 cart will give you the most bang for your buck as it will give you the whole library, and you can save the rest for just collecting. Chrono Trigger will be the most expensive, Zelda the most affordable (although still ~$65 for just the cart) and it depends if you want manuals, maps and box. You can also get reproduction carts for some of the stupid expensive ones (like Earthbound) to keep it affordable.

But try for a lot, but ~5-10 games at a time for a reasonable price. You don't tend to find FF/CT in lots, but Zelda you can, and you'll find some other titles you didn't consider before but you may end up really enjoying (Sim City, for example, which is only a ~$5 game. Many lots do tend to try to dump a lot of sports titles though, so don't get stuck with too many of those. A few is fine if you enjoy them, just mix it up)

Thank you I appreciate it, lots meaning like on eBay trying to get a bundle of cartridges right?

Correct. I even ended up picking up a few other systems just for the games included, then resold them with any duplicate games I'd accumulated.

Also, while it's nice have CiB (complete in box) in the case of those 3 in particular, and many RPGs, the included maps often spoil a fair bit of the game for you. Good for kids, maybe, and to tease what's ahead, but you're an adult, and honestly it's more fun playing just a little blind and not knowing what lies ahead in the game until you get there.

That’s smart, also couldn’t you just get that all separately for a lot cheaper or honestly just a remake of the case if you didn’t want to fork out 100$ for cardboard and paper

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I do enjoy reuniting old manuals and maps with their boxes and games - sometimes it winds up a little cheaper then buying an already complete in box, sometimes it's more expensive tracking all of them down. Consider that you pay shipping fees 4 times when buying 4 seperate items. And for many games, the loose boxes and manuals available are of varying quality, and the good looking ones can go for crazy money. (Saw a Super Mario Brothers All-Stars EMPTY BOX go for over $200 last month just because it was in primo condition)

Sometimes you want to real things, the original. Sometimes I buy repros - I just got a $15 reproduction Earthbound box to go with my repro cart, because I'm not shelling out ~$1,500+ or whatever for the originals.

I wanted to gift TLoZ:ALttP to a friend who'd never played it. Got a cart with the battery replaced to make sure they could actually save, a water damaged map I knew I could press a little flatter, a decent enough manual and a reproduction box. I maybe saved, I dunno, 30% over just getting it cib already from someone.
