Showcase [Marvel's Wolverine] Platinum #62
Platinum #62 Marvel's Wolverine
Time Taken: 28 hours
Difficulty: 3/10 (Played on Hardest Difficulty)
The more I played Wolverine, the more I came to notice how much of an unfinished product it is. Levels have no rhyme or reason to how they are designed, the combat takes an hour at most to master, and the story moves at a breakneck pace with little introspection along the way. There is a lot to love in this game, but it's hard to appreciate its heights when it is painfully obvious that this game had a different vision sometime during development, leaving a disconnect apparent within core design philosophies.
It's core gameplay pillar is reminiscent of the PS2-era brawlers I grew up on, and so of course I was going to enjoy it somewhat. Even within its simplistic combat model, they leave out abilities late into the game which makes for some dull stretches of sequences where you can't do much but mash a couple of buttons. I enjoyed the combat later into the game, where open areas and a variety of movesets made me feel in control of the battlefield.
Where I don't feel in control is in laborious walking sections, where neither the story shines nor can you have fun ripping baddies apart. Cutscenes do a better job at storytelling- the highlight of which was Jean and Logan's will-they-won't-they relationship. Even though Insomniac's tendency for chaotic story progression hurts the narrative, strong character work from brilliant performances save the day, and make for much needed maturity within Insomniac's storytelling repertoire. I did not find the story all that compelling, but I did come to care for this version of Logan and Jean, and to an extent I even appreciated this Nathaniel Essex, even though his arc felt quite rushed.
It was a bittersweet reaction when the section in which "The Dark End of the Street" played, I was taken back to the announcement of this game and how exciting it was. Every design decision in this game is a safe, tested recreation of what we expect from any videogame, but that hurts to say that when the game comes from a studio as revered and talented as Insomniac.
