Tips and Tricks Blocking for the first time

I’m finishing seaming a basic cardigan made with malabrigo Rasta, this is my first wearable besides basic hats. I’ve never blocked anything.

The sleeves are about mid forearm, and I even added two more rows to them than the pattern called for. Can I realistically get them to my wrist?

I have ordered wool wash, mats, and the combs (they’ll be here tomorrow).

Is all I need to do, wash it, get the water out by rolling it in a towel and then pin it in the desired length/shape and let it air dry?

Help - equipment Gauge trouble

Hello!

I'm a beginner and need some advice regarding my first bigger project. I want to make an Uva hoodie scarf from Refined kniwear as a christmas gift for my sister.

The instruction says:

-250 g of Ballerina Chunky Mohair, 135 m/50 g, from Sandnes Yarn, or 300 g of Fluffy Mohair, 200 m/100 g, from Cowgirl Blues, or

Fat Mohair from brands like Sysleriget or Siesto Fibres. Use two strands.

-The hoodie scarf is knitted in rib (k1, p1) using 5 mm circular needles (80 cm) with two strands of Ballerina Chunky Mohair

-Gauge- Approx. 15 stitches x 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm in rib (k1, p1) on 5 mm needles, worked flat.

I decided against pure mohair because I find it very itchy. I went to my local yarn shop and ask for help choosing another yarn. I bought Drops Big merino and Drops Kid-silk (see picture) and used one strand of both.

However my swatch does not fit the one from the instruction and I'm lost what to do now.

My swatch before blocking was 13 stitches x 24 rows and after blocking it is 11 sts x 23 rows.

Should I go down with needle size? From 5.0mm to 4.5 or 4? How do I adjust the work properly to end up with a wearable hoodie scarf?

Thank you in advance for all tips!

Discussion Knitting Study Programs

Hello, I've been knitting for a very long time and, as my partner approaches the beginning of her career, I was wondering if I might want to go back to university or some sort of program. I was wondering if anyone knew of any knitting/textile/weaving studies/apprenticeships/programs that are more focused on the history of knitting and maybe passing on traditional methods? I'm from South America now living in Spain and I just feel really inspired to focus on making things slow and by hand (or machine) in a way that's appreciative of the history. I feel like everything I find online is with the goal of getting a job in textile factories or a big brand like dolce and Gabbana.

Help - equipment Yarn donation question

Hi all, I’m picking up a bag of 100% acrylic yarn today to make some donation items with for some local charities. What is the best way to ensure I don’t bring any bugs or pests into my home with it? Should I freeze it like wool? Wash it separately before using? Store it in a specific way or in a plastic bin with a locking lid? Advice welcome!

(And Before anyone asks, I’m allergic to all wool so I’m not using other yarns, yes this is the most sustainable option because someone was getting rid of it, and no, it’s not terrible and scratchy so please stop hating on acrylic because it’s not all the early 2000s red heart scratchy stuff).

Just learned about this ultra lux yarn. Softer & warmer than cashmere - also significantly more $$$.

Now, I’m just curious to hear if anyone has used it and if it’s as fab as claimed.

(If you’ve used it - where’d you get it?ā€

Discussion ISO: Alternatives to Teroldego

EDIT: TECUMSEH, not Teroldego. Jeeze the mom brain got me on this one.

I have a stash of yarn that's been slated for Teroldego for the last like... 10 years. I finally got to that part of my stash but my heart just isn't in it as much as it once was. Does anyone have any alternatives that they liked? Yarn I have is Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool.

Work in Progress mathilde knits rose top - folded collar question

Thumbnail

hi! this is probably a genuinely stupid question 😭 but i am making the rose top by mathilde knits and it is my second project ever, also the first time working with a knitting pattern that is pretty vague.

i’m on the finishing touches part and i genuinely cannot understand the part in the photo logistically, as in which way i am supposed to fold the collar.

the collar is the 2nd photo, am i supposed to saw it to the inside, ultimately making it smaller like the 3rd photo or is it supposed to go the other way and curl, with the purls showing like the 4th photo? also if someone could direct me to a tutorial/visual for sewing down such a skinny collar, i’d be so grateful.

thank you!!

Discussion question on repairing

sorry I didn't know what flair to use for this.

I was given a sweater to repair for someone. It is very important to her that I take as much time as I need to make sure it is repaired as perfectly as possible because it is a sentimental item. I've had trouble finding yarn that is a perfect match for it. Just found yarn that is a near perfect colour match, but it's acrylic. The sweater is wool, not sure what type, the tag on it just says 'all pure wool'. The texture and weight is a good match but I'm not sure if being a different fibre will cause issues. I bought the yarn just in case it is something that works, but I'll probably keep looking. It's just a very specific shade of golden-biege-off white that I'm having trouble finding a colour match for.

So my question is- will using an acrylic yarn to repair some small holes in a wool sweater be fine, or is it better to keep hunting for a better match?

Anyone able to explain it to me like I'm 5? Pleeeeaassseee.

Edit: sorry for not being more specific. I got the decreases no problem. It's starting from the second line where it says to decrease for the arm holes. If I do that will they be closed? It just occurred to me as I was typing that it could be steeked but wouldn't it say that in the pattern?

Edit 2 to include pattern https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elsa---sweater

Edit 3 solved! I think I have to attach 2 more skeins for each individual section. Thank you!

Iā€˜m knitting the tattoo flash cardigan as a christmas gift. This is my first time doing stranded colorwork. Iā€˜m a bit of a perfectionist so I don’t really know if my concerns are valid or if i’m just overthinking. My white stiches are a bit uneven which doesn’t concern me too much, Iā€˜m more worried about puckering? I know it doesn’t look like a lot but Iā€˜m knitting an XL and it’s taken me ages to get here so I don’t want to go back if it’s not absolutely necessary.
Hoping for honest feedback:)

Work in Progress Help with doing a K1b on a DS

Hello I am working on the Too-ticky sweater and I have moved on to the yoke.

There is this note from the pattern creator ā€œResolve each DS by working it as if a single st. When working a "klbyok1b" on a DS, insert the needle into only the top loop of the layers forming the DS.ā€

My problem is: I am having trouble understanding what ā€œthe top loop of the layers forming the DSā€ means. Does that mean to essentially just knit them like a regular knit stitch? Am I over thinking this? Thank you in advance and I would also appreciate hearing from anyone else who may have worked this pattern before

Help - equipment Recommend some Irish yarn?

Hi Friends,

A colleague of mine will be going to Ireland next week and offered to bring me back some yarn. I want to try to make the Florence step by step sweater and use this yarn. Could anyone recommend brands to me so I can let them know what to get? I know it has to be aran weight and I would really like a wool or merino wool blend.

Thank you for the help!

Tips and Tricks Sweater Surgery Advise

Hi all, I thriftedthis cotton knit which I love and it fits perfectly in the arms and upper body, but it is giving dress with how long it is on me. I was wondering if it’s possible to do a sweater surgery on this to preserve the cable design closer to the hem. I’ve knitted sweaters before in the round but never done a sweater surgery or knit with cotton. also this one looks to be panels attached on the side. I wouldn’t want to accidentally destroy the sweater and would still wear it as is over accidentally wrecking it. Has anyone ever done a surgery on a panel sweater?

Discussion How to find good quality knit clothing?

Hello! ā˜ŗļø

I’m not a knitter but I’m trying to be a more conscious shopper and I was wondering how to tell if a knit item sold at a clothing store is made well? (Ex structurally, yarn quality, overpriced etc). I’m looking for a knitted set of a long sleeve sweater and long pants that hugs the body well and is comfy during the f/w. Also if I’m luckyšŸ¤žšŸ½ something that lasts longer than a couple washes lol. What are some things to look out for when shopping in person or online ? I’d appreciate the help, thank you!ā˜ŗļøšŸ’•

Discussion hot weather knits?

I used to live in Michigan and knit lots of hats, scarves, cowls, mittens, and I was planning to start my first sweater. However, I’ve now moved to Louisiana and it seems far too hot here (even in winter) to even think about wearing a sweater outside.

Important to note that I am not a woman and don’t particularly like very frilly blouses/skirts, but worse than that, I have sensory issues that make wearing any top except cotton t-shirts pretty awful, especially tight fitting ones. So fun tank tops, crop tops, blouses, etc are all out.

Does anyone have good project ideas that are summer clothing but not tight crop tops/tank tops?Or, other useful knit things to use somewhere in the house?

Contribution to the group since I'm new here. We moved to the Great Lakes area recently so we needed some warmer clothing. I made 2 sweaters for the hubs so far. The first is from Viking Knits by Lasse Matburg. Pattern name "The Viking". Made with KnitPicks Swish Bulky in Marine Heather colorway. The second is "Neo's sweater" by Suss Cousins in her book "Hollywood Knits". This is made with the Sinfonia cotton yarn in colorway "Ladrillo (brick).

Help - equipment Knitting with Yarn for Weaving?

I have the opportunity to buy a TON of secondhand wool cones for not a lot of money. The woman selling them has told me that she believes they are for weaving, but they are colors I would absolutely use and want to knit with. From what I'm reading online, the main issue with knitting with yarn spun specifically for weaving will be the tilt of the stitches due to the yarn being spun tighter. I am not a super particular knitter, so I am thinking there must be a way to still use it/get around this problem. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't do any weaving, so would it be a total waste of money?
