This year was my first time entering my knitting in any endeavor that involves judging and I actually won a ribbon. I entered my Cara Sweater (pattern by LE Knit) in the Washington State Fair this year and took home the 2nd place ribbon for adult pullover sweaters. Whaaa?! My gobs have been sufficiently smacked. Anyway… I’m super stoked about it and just wanted to share a fun update on a Friday. :)

Discussion So Many Minimalist Beige Sweaters AKA Is Time to Make “Hot Right Now” Weird Again?

Thumbnail
image
1.5k Upvotes

Y’all, what is happening out there?! At the moment, 8.5 of the cover images in the top 20 “hot” patterns on Ravelry are beige / cream sweaters. (The .5 sweater has stripes, so I didn’t think it should count as a whole beige sweater. And, fear not, one of the other 8 is indeed Ranunculus. 😂)

I swear, no judgement to all our beautiful, neutral-colored sweater fam. Really, whatever crisps your bacon is good with me, but I still think this is a sign that it’s time for a little good-natured manipulation of the algorithm.

Especially when The Garment is already so tantalizingly close to breaking the top 20! Its vibe is understated kooky, which is really hard to pull off, and it’s sort of a beige sweater, even. If you squint.

Who’s with me?! If so, please share your favorite Ravelry patterns that are as far away from Minimalist Beige Sweater as humanly possible. (See earlier threads in this vein for inspiration.)

Sure, sure, I am looking for some chuckles here, but I also have an ulterior motive. The last time I played along with this game, it also opened up a whole world of new-to-me knitting textures. This led me to designers like Olga Buraya-Kefelian whose work is really art masquerading as craft. I cannot exaggerate how much I learned from the wild assortment of patterns this community can pull together when we are looking to engage in a little innocent mischief.

So, whatcha got for me, dear internet strangers? Hopefully, I won’t regret asking for something that makes The Garment look positively mainstream. 😜

EDIT: Well, The Garment has made it a hair’s breadth from the top ten, but we didn’t manage to weird up Hot Right Now nearly as effectively as we have in the past. I see a few designs we are definitely responsible for like Joinery, Hands, and maybe Herding Piggies. But no Desperate Housefrau, Fresh Fruit, Chicken Hat Headpiece, Snow Fooling Ski Mask, or HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA. Ah, well. You can’t win ‘em all.

Either way, I really enjoyed seeing what everyone came up with and my favorites list is has an excellent new dose of kookiness now. Thanks so much, all!

I knitted PetiteKnit’s Novice Slipover for my husband and he loved it so much that I’ve made him two more! He wears them so often that our friends jokingly ask if he owns any other clothes.

Pics 1-2: knitted in KFO merino held double in Dusty Sea Green. Followed the pattern but made some small modifications to widen the neck and make the arm holes deeper.

Pics 3-4: knitted in Ginger Twist Studio Sweet Flax in Hocus Pocus, held double. Picked up this hand-dyed yarn when I was in Scotland and it’s soooo luxurious. Baby alpaca, silk, and linen - the drape on this is beautiful, I wish I’d picked up some yarn for myself! Followed the same modifications as above but deepened the arm holes even more to compensate for less elasticity in the fiber.

Pics 5-7: knitted in KFO merino held double in Dark Ochre. No modifications. Finished this while on holiday in Czechia…if I had a dollar for every time I’ve blocked a project in a hotel sink….

Clover sweater by LeKnit

Knitting for olive merino held with two strands of knitting for olive soft silk mohair in the shade Bordeaux for both

5.5mm needles

This sweater was so nice to knit. Engaging enough so you don't get bored with plain stockinette. First time doing scalloped edges so shocked at how easy they were. Can't wait for the cooler weather coming up to wear it 🥹

Finally finished in time for our sheep fair!

I've got long covid so working out the stitches was hard. I had a basic pattern but I changed yarn and needle size. I altered sleeves and used a motif for the dog, but just a simple design for sheep. I knitted the head and sewed on. It's kept me going through difficult days, now ready for another project! :)

Work in Progress (A little bit of) progress on my first real knit! Thanks for all the helpful advice in here

Like many of my predecessors I'm knitting Florence Miller's Step by Step Sweater in Caron Blossom Cakes in the color Tidepool. If it makes other beginners feel better, getting the first two rows down took me three complete restarts and at one point my needle came unscrewed from the cable and a bunch of stitches were loose, but we are back in business. Even the gauge swatch took many attempts. This is my first knit (outside of swatches) so I'm excited to make something wearable! I also fell in love with Bad Sheep Yarn's Mountain Tundra yarn and would love to do a future project with that one, once my skills improve and I can justify the investment (and withstand the consequences of my lanolin sensitivity 😂) Thanks for all the helpful advice and posts in here!

Work in Progress What do you do when you realize you've knitted 80% of the sleeve and forgot to do even a single decrease? You improvise and make do with balloon sleeves

Thumbnail

As the title said, I somehow forgot to do the sleeve decreases and realized when I've knitted 29 cm of the required 32.... so I had to improvise a bit because I don't enjoy the sleeve island on 4 mm needles. Improvise, adapt, overcome, right?

I was lucky to also have the Balloon sweater pattern from Petiteknit and the it had the same gauge, stitch number and finished size so I just followed the pattern and voila.

Tbh, I'm not that displeased with the result and I may even like it a bit.

First ever sweater I made and yes I probably shouldn't have done color work for it but I like to live on the edge and I had tons of practice with color work socks

And I wanted to get a white zipper but the chunky zipper I wanted cost like 30 something dollars while the black one cost 8 so black zipper it was

I don't have a pattern because I kind of eyeballed it.

I used Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn in the colors pumpkin and white and Big Twist value yarn in Varsity Blue.(it's what I had on hand )

It took me quite long to finish, but I am happy to finally be able to wear this beautiful Roni sweater, designed by kolibri by Johanna, and share it with you.

Not a simple pattern in my opinion, especially for a beginner and for the yoke section.

The result is really worth it.

I used for the main yarn, Soft sensation by Lammy yarns held double, and for the textured and lace sections, added Pascuali Suave as the second strand. It did grow a bit with blocking, giving a nice fit and long sleeves 💜

All other infos in the card in photo 😉

I have been a notoriously tight knitter. I've been trying to follow Patty Lyon's advice to let the tool do the work, and I successfully hit gauge on my first ever brioche project!

I am thrilled, and I know y'all will understand my joy.

I'm making Stephen West's Brioche Pup Sweater for my mother-in-law's little terrier/wire-haired doxie mix.

Work in Progress Mid project blocking

Thumbnail

I’m knitting my first top down sweater using Cascade 220 yarn and the Step by Step pattern from handmade by Florence and just wanted some insight into blocking before starting ribbing. I steam blocked about halfway through the body and gained half an inch in length, so I was going to account for another half an inch with my bind off.

I guess I’m wondering is steaming enough or do I need to fully submerge my knit to get an accurate read on how much my sweater will change? When blocking mid project too, do you transfer everything to waste yarn? Any insight is much appreciated! Pic provided is after steaming

Discussion Yarn recommendations for Merino and Mohair

Hey all,
I’ve seen a heap of posts already about knitting for olive selling into a private equity company and wanted to find out what other yarn people are using if they aren’t using KFO anymore.
I am Australian so even KFO is very expensive for me ($14 per 50g) so any recommendations that aren’t too expensive would be appreciated. I am looking for mohair and merino wool specifically and with a good range of colours.
Thanks !!

Work in Progress How to knit arms and legs for my pop tart

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

As shown in my first photo I believe I did pretty well making a chocolate pop tart with cookies and cream icing. Next time I'll make the icing smaller but that's in the future. However I'd love to give it arms and legs like the old 90s commercials. But I mainly knit food not dolls. I've been trying to find a pattern to follow to make the feet but can't find any I like. And honestly for the hand I'd really just like a small little fist instead of hands. I just don't know how to phrase my question in Google in order to find what I'm looking for.

Discussion Toe up socks driving me crazy!

I feel like I have been trying to start these toe up socks forever - I have wasted so much yarn trying to cast on. I have tried Turkish cast on and Judy's Magic cast on. I keep getting laddering on the sides and loose stitches particularly in the 2nd to 3rd rows when i start making the M1R's and M1L's. I've adjusted my tension, gotten longer circular needles, tried DPNS, etc etc. Help!!!

Help - equipment Muskox Yarn - Qiviut

Just learned about this ultra lux yarn. Softer & warmer than cashmere - also significantly more $$$.

Now, I’m just curious to hear if anyone has used it and if it’s as fab as claimed.

(If you’ve used it - where’d you get it?”
