From Arch to Debian!

Thumbnail image
255 Upvotes

After 5-6 years of Arch (with KDE), I finally moved to Debian (with Xfce).

What I appreciated about Arch (and KDE):

  1. Rolling release: I could use the latest version of the kernel, Gradle (I'm an Android dev) and other tools where being on the latest version matters.

  2. Extensive Wiki and documentation: Arch wiki is just great.

  3. AUR: makes installing packages that aren't in the official repos easier, it's like a book of recipes, and it's literally got everything you could imagine.

  4. Customizability: this is where KDE excels, versatile and everything is configurable.

  5. KDE Connect: made my life easier all these years, thanks!

What I didn't like about Arch (and KDE):

  1. Rolling release (yes, again): not necessarily because it's bad, I just happen to live in a 3rd world country where internet is very limited and slow (how fuckin lucky for me I guess), so I would update once every 5-6 months and that breaks stuff, and sometimes you need to install a simple package, but because you haven't updated in a while, you need to update the repos, and then the package ends up forcing you to update the whole system anyway because of problems with partial updates and dependencies. Again, this is not on Arch, I blame this on geography.

  2. KDE is a bit heavy: compared to Xfce, and comes with a ton of preinstalled apps, many of them were actually useful, but I ended up going through the app list and debloating as if I was using Windows.

  3. The community: arch elitism is real, and it is a bit toxic, but it's tolerable when you've been using arch for a long time.

If you reached this point, thanks for reading! And I would appreciate a KDE Connect alternative that works with Xfce, I know you can set up KDE Connect on Xfce anyway but I don't wanna bring the whole Qt suite, I would rather have something light and GTK based. If you know a name drop it in the comments, thanks again! :)

Debian Stable Question Nvidia driver 580 for Pascal

Thumbnail image
• Upvotes

Good morning,

I'm trying to install Nvidia drivers on a GTX 1050, Pascal series, in Debian 13 Xfce. But the current version available in the repositories is driver 550, which gives me this error on temperature readings.

I understand the latest driver for this GPU is the 580 driver. Is there any way to install it without breaking Debian? Has anyone done it successfully?

The current driver does work, but I do worry about not being able to see the full GPU performance. I'm considering switching to Fedora, but again they have made 580 drivers a legacy package. I do prefer Debian thanks to its less maintenance overhead.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance. Sorry for the low quality image.

The system is a hybrid HP Pavilion 15 gaming laptop with Intel i5 10300H, Intel iGPU, Nvidia GTX 1050 and 8GB RAM

Wake from suspend takes 20+ seconds. I believe this ACPI error is the cause, but I'm not sure:

Okt 03 12:55:26 ... Restarting tasks ... done.
Okt 03 12:55:26 ... PM: suspend exit

It also seems to happen more often when leave the system suspended for a long time.

Tried, no effect:

  • Disabling XHC1 wakeup via /proc/acpi/wakeup

Has anyone with this model or anyone with a MacBook slow wake issue run into this?

Originally there was only Firefox there. Then Konqueror appeared out of nowhere right next to it. After the update, Konqueror disappeared and was replaced by two Firefoxes.

The same thing happens on my laptop too so not “your issue”.

Thank you to Zihad for this tutorial. Wish I had seen this 5 hours ago. I'm a total noob with Linux and this let me watch Kill Bill on my laptop. I'm running Debian (Trixie) on a thinkpad.

(P.s. VLC has a little black and yellow cone with blood whenever you play Kill Bill 1 or 2 :D )

Edit: Grammar

Why does the network autoconfiguration fail?

So, for information, I installed debian on a laptop without any issues.
Then I decided I wanted to install it on an old pc, which worked fine at first until I got to chose the packet manager mirror, where it failed to recognize the default one and multiple others I tried.
I skipped the step and finished the install because I thought it was an issue with the iso image and I was just going to reinstall debian.
So, I start the install for the second time and it already fails at the network autoconfiguration. I use an ethernet cable, but it may be that my wifi isn’t very stable and if I might just try later if that’s the case.
Does anyone have other ideas why it failed?

Update:
so it really was just a network issue and it works fine now.

Debian quirks

I have been running Debian on my servers for donkeys' years and been quite happy with it despite systemd, so when I had problems on my desktop computer with my YubiKey setup on a more obscure distro that also changed their package manager in a way that for me required a reinstall, I thought Debian, of course.

I don't know if I have been unlucky or if Debian (and its packaged programs) just has some strange quirks — actually, my web searches seem to indicate the latter.

When I turn my screen off and on again, like overnight, the HDMI sound sometimes doesn't work — never a problem with my previous distro. Depending on the mood of my machine, I can turn the screen off and on again or unplug the cable and replug it — and it may work … or it may not.

And Chromium on Debian seems to dislike a certain HTML date entry widgets where it consistently uses the US American date format despite everything on my computer set to UK. Trying the same widget with Firefox on the same machine, no problem. Trying the same widget with Chromium on another distro, no problem.

XFCE4 on Debian has a quirk that it turns off the NumLock indicator on the keyboard when the screen is locked, but NumLock is actually on. Why??? If I also turn the screen off, NumLock and the indicator are turned off. Never happened with XFCE on the other distro.

Sigh!

This is more of a vent than a request for help, TBH, I will probably live with it as it is as I have already tried many "homeopathic" remedies from the interwebs and used quite a bit of time with no particularly good outcome.

8GB RAM Debian was freezing under heavy multitasking — zram fixed it

Thumbnail image
272 Upvotes

I was having a memory-related performance issue on Debian 13 GNOME with 8GB RAM.

On Windows 11, I can run Chrome, Firefox with many tabs, VS Code, Postman, Terminal, WhatsApp, etc. together and the system stays smooth even with very high RAM usage.

But on Debian, Firefox + Chromium + VS Code with multiple tabs could make the system extremely slow or even hang when RAM usage got close to full.

With the help of AI, I checked my system and found:

  • 7.5 GiB usable RAM
  • 5.2 GiB disk swap
  • swappiness = 60
  • No zram

I enabled zram, and it now looks like this:

/dev/zram0 lz4 3.8G priority 100
/dev/nvme0n1p7 5.2G priority -2

After enabling zram, the problem was solved. Heavy multitasking is now much smoother, even under high memory usage.

So if you're using Linux with only 8GB RAM and running GNOME + multiple browsers + VS Code, checking whether zram is enabled might be worthwhile.

Community I need some answers

Thumbnail image
29 Upvotes

It's been quite some time since I switched to Linux, and I've already tried a lot of distros, being my favorite ones Mint and Fedora KDE. Either way, I have seen A LOT of people talking about how great, good, stable and amazing Debian is. And I haven't used that one yet, but I want to give it a try. I have asked AI like Gemini about what could be better for my PC, which I use mainly to play games in Steam (like Dota 2), watch videos, study and occasionally do some video/image editing, and it says that Debian wouldn't be a good option in general for my PC. So, of course I am not a development user that will have some server or other complex stuff. I would like to ask the people who knows about that in this community, what should I do if all I wanna do is keep going with my simple stuff, without complicating too much my life? Using Debian would be the same or better (or worse) than Mint when it comes to playing Dota 2, for example? Thank you for the answers, in advance. And any other recommendation that you can give for using Linux is very welcome.

Dell Vostro 3520 running Debian 13: Looking for fixes for deep sleep, touchpad, and keyboard quirks

I installed Debian on Dell Vostro 3520 as dual boot along with Windows 10 may be an year ago. Now it has becane my primary OS, logining to Windows may be once a month. I love it except for two reasons:

  1. If laptop goes to deep sleep (while on battery) it never wakes up. I have to press power button for close to 1 minute to hard reset it.
  2. Mouse left click stops working all of a sudden and works fine on next boot. Sometimes auto scroll kicks in without my intervenion and that is annoying.
  3. Keyboard sometimes registers multiple keys with a single key press.

Have tried a number of solutions and monitoring tools to diagnose keyboard and mouse issue to no avail.

Fiddled with BIOS power settings to resolve deep sleep issue but no relief.

Perhaps I have to live forever with these ailments. Would be thankful if solutions are pointed out.

Here are details of my system:

Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie)

Kernel: Linux 6.12.111+deb13-amd64

Architecture: x86-64

Hardware Vendor: Dell Vostro 3520

Firmware Version: 1.42.0

I tried Debian and...

I am still a beginner in Linux and before I just tried some easy distros, like mint and Ubuntu.

Now I installed Debian and tried it on a hp laptop I got before 12 years or something, It wasn't hard that much to install, I didn't need to read documents to know what to do I just used Ai to know how and why to do things, it helped me to use this laptop again without lagging, and with choosing lxqt as a desktop environment i can prefer to use it than my windows laptop i got before 3 years or less. If you have any advice for linux at general or Debian specifically I enjoy to know more .

Chromium based browsers close the session abruptly

This is for an old PC that I'm reviving and bringing to the Linux side, IIRC: 4Gb RAM probably DDR2 or 3, Core 2 duo.

As soon I play a video in youtube, or music in soundcloud, heck, even clicking to download rustdesk the session dies, just dies. Firefox works otherwise, but they need chromium based due to Teams and G-Meet calls, sharing videos on Firefox doesn't share audio so ... yeah ...

I need advice please, I put on it Debian 13 XFCE.

Thanks!

Laptops keyboard not working after update. Used timeshift to old snapshots, it works, but I run apt update/upgrade and it stops working.

I’m going crazy!

An external keyboard works, but not the one built into the laptop. It’s so weird that when I run update and upgrade is when it breaks. But if I don’t updTe on an old snapshot it still works. It’s driving me crazy!

Debian solved the weird laptop thermal issue I had on Fedora

Thumbnail image
100 Upvotes

I wanted to share a weird experience I had regarding thermals, in case anyone else ever runs into something similar.

I didn't even game or do any heavy workloads on Fedora, yet I had this bizarre and annoying thermal issue where the heat concentrated entirely in one specific spot right around the palm rest area next to the touchpad, it starts whenever i boot to Fedora, while the rest of the laptop chassis stayed completely cool. Meanwhile, Windows handled thermals normally, and the chassis stayed cool overall.

I spent weeks trying literally everything

  • Consulted almost every AI model available.
  • Searched through various forums and subreddits.
  • Tweaked fan curves and settings multiple times.
  • Switched power profiles, power management tools, and utilities.
  • Switched desktop environments from KDE Plasma to GNOME, and even performed a clean reinstall.
  • Changed kernel versions multiple times.

When I asked around, people kept telling me that "Linux is Linux across all distributions" because they share the same kernel, so switching distros shouldn't make a difference.

Still, I wasn't ready to give up on Linux. I looked at the big names outside of Fedora, which basically boiled down to Arch and Debian. Arch seemed like a hassle with potential instability, plus I don't like constantly updating my system, so Debian felt like the most logical choice to test.

I gave Debian Stable a shot, and to my surprise, it completely solved the issue. Debian not only lowered the overall system thermals, but it also completely eliminated the localized heat around the touchpad. Even when the laptop gets slightly warm under load, the heat is evenly distributed across the chassis and barely noticeable now.

Thought it was worth sharing.

General Debian Question Resolutions is out of proportion!! It is a DELL XPS 13 running with default kernel.

Wondering why that is so?

XRANDR shows it has a fixed resolution of 2560x1600, and that's it.

As a result, the window manager I am using(i.e., i3) is working but...but... missing some visible components (i.e., i3bar)

I have spent a couple of days, and I couldn't figure it out. Why is it happening like this ...

Did I check the Xorg log??? That's the first place I went, and it didn't alarm me with the output.

Also, did I check the i3 window manager log?? Of course I did... had something abnormal ....nahhh....

For brevity, I tried to build the custom kernel, and it plays out the same... sigh

Debian Stable Question Crusader Kings 2 graphical problem on Debian based LMDE7

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Hello,

(1st image is the game's main menu, 2nd image is playing, 3rd image is the (unchanged) "Runner options" in Lutris for the game)

I am having a GRAPHICAL issue (only) with Crusader Kings 2 on my LMDE7 PC. This same PC used to run the game, no issues, on Windows 11. And I will list the specs below. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue.

The game itself ACTUALLY WORKS and runs smoothly, but the BIG issue is that the MAP (the main way to interact with the game) is cooked, the GUI and everything else seems to work great actually (I did not do a long testing session for obvious reasons, but it seems to work).

My game setup (for Windows games) is Lutris with GOG.com offline installers. I do not wish to use Steam or any other launcher needing online authentication (Heroic). I use Lutris, but not it's online components.

Also, I am aware that Crusader Kings 2 has native Linux support. However (after contacting the devs myself) I was told that there is no plan to ever make those version available on other platforms other than Steam, as the game is not being developed anymore. So I am left with .exe installers only.

PC Specs:

  • GPU: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7600 8G
  • CPU: 6-core 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F
  • MOBO: ASrock B760M-HDV/M.2 D4
  • Storage: a 512GB NVME SSD (plenty of free space)
  • Dual monitor setup

Tech specs:

  • OS: LMDE 7 (gigi) x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.12.111+deb13-amd64 x86_64
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.6.9
  • WM: Muffin (X11)
  • GL info:
    • OpenGL vendor string: AMD
    • OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon RX 7600 (radeonsi, navi33, LLVM 19.1.7, DRM 3.61, 6.12.111+deb13-amd64)
    • OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 25.0.7-2+deb13u1
  • Wine version (Lutris): GE-Proton (Latest)
  • "Wine --version": wine-11.0

I also wanna add, that this is a recent install, I did not do anything crazy like changing the DE or the kernel version. I am new to Linux. All I have ever done on this PC is download flatpaks, images and native Linux games. So it is pretty much the most basic out of the box version of LMDE7. And YES, I did "sudo apt upgrade/update" and restart my PC afterwards.

Also, other games do work. Native, GOG Linux native, Windows through Lutris, those all work, some with tinkering, some ootb. Even similar games, like EU4 (also a "map game") which works no issue.

I could not find anyone else struggling with the same issue. I am guessing it's because it's a niche withing a niche (DRM-free gaming + Linux) lol. ProtonDB was no help, as it is Steam-centric.

All I tried so far is changing the graphical in game settings (including swapping between windowed and fullscreen), which did nothing.

If needed I am ready to provide more info or test stuff. I am new to Linux so I don't really know about Linux, I am still learning. My Main goal right now is to set up all my main games so they just work and are stable.
